  147.      I made a major mistake yesterday.  While setting my VCR to record Buffy I

  150.  Buffy, and boy do I regret it!).  So I was hoping me and someone here could

  233. I think your comment about Angel not showing pain after Buffy kissed him
  234. and unknowingly left that burn mark on his chest with her cross is an
  235. indication of lack of acting on David Boreanz's part, or you missed --
  236. what I thought was a good piece of acting by David -- the pain he was
  237. trying to conceal from Buffy but which I think most of the audience
  238. interpreted as pain.

  240. I loved that scene where Buffy put her cross into the mouth of the
  241. vampire.  The wisps of smoke that came out of her mouth as Buffy held the
  242. cross in her made it look really painful.  I imagine it felt like the
  243. time I accidentally gargled with 100% Rubbing Alcohol instead of mouth
  244. wash.

  304. out of bed, dresses including shoes, and bolts out of the house and Buffy

  319. I like the idea of a smaller cast also, but only when it comes to the core
  320. group or Scooby gang. I think more villians would be cool since it gets a
  321. little old watching Spike and Dru try to get Buffy all the time and fail when
  322. you know there has to be more vamps out there wanting to do the slayer in. I
  323. like the Scooby gang just the way it is. The chemistry works so well, I hate
  324. to see them mess with it. I will say that I am glad that Oz will be a regular,
  325. but at least he was slowly added to the group over several episodes.

  343. Hey don't feel bad, I would have said the animal crackers were more Oz's than
  344. Willow's. He's the one who had studied them enough to find that the monkey
  345. only had pants. I thought it was the chocolate chip cookies she analyzed in
  346. Ted...I'll buy that it could be oreos that she referred to in Go Fish,
  347. although that was minor. Someone has mentioned that she might have been in an
  348. oreo commercial as a child. Who knows that though? It would have been better

  370. You had to ask. Well, sadly enough my dreams don't actually involve the cast
  371. or slaying in any way. They're more along the lines of "oh my god, i missed
  372. the episode" panic attack. Terrible anxiety dreams. Oh, I had a doozie during
  373. that week separation of Becoming...I had horrible nightmares where I would
  374. remember it was Tuesday half an hour into the ep, or my tv was
  375. surrealistically missing and no one else had a tv. Then that Tuesday, the
  376. second part, we had a power outtage and our tvs were out, as were our comps
  377. and phones and lights. It was a nightmare. The power finally came back on at
  378. five thirty, after five hours. I nearly died. It was pretty scary. On a plus
  379. note, some finals were cancelled...though I'd rather take double the amount of
  380. finals then miss buffy, especially Becoming.

  476. Warning:  If you are seeking "Innocence" from SPOILERS about the
  477. conclusion of the big Buffy, 2-night event, please consider turning back
  478. now.  There are major SPOIlERS ahead that may ruin some of the plot twists
  479. and surprises....
  480.  
  481. In short:  Absolutely incredible. 
  482.  
  483.     I'm an opening credits reader.  Basically what that means is that,
  484. once I really start watching a show, I learn to read the opening credits,
  485. paying special attention to the author of the show and the director.  In a
  486. majoirty of the cases, I can tell just by a writer how I will probably
  487. feel about the show come the rolling of the closing credits.  (This is
  488. espcially true with Trek!)  Yes, I may be suprised either way, but
  489. usually it's a safe bet.  
  490.     So, when I saw that "Innocence" had been both written and directed
  491. by Joss Whedon, I sat up with greater interest.  Not that I wasn't hanging
  492. on the edge of my seat from "Suprise" but the show being by Whedon only
  493. raised the stakes a bit for me.  After all, he had also given us earlier
  494. this year the spectacular "Lie to Me," and I was prepared for more.
  495.     All I have to say now is that my expectations were not only met
  496. but exceeded in every possible way.  If anyone out there is looking for
  497. the perfect episode to exemplify why Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of
  498. the best shows on TV, this one is it.  
  499.     How do I love this episode?  Let me count the ways.    
  500.     The thing that I loved the most was the fact that the commercials
  501. all said this would forever change the show and it did.  I am a bit jaded
  502. by other shows that promise big changes but they never happen.  In
  503. "Suprise," Joss and company put a lot of major changes into play.  I was
  504. certainly expecting a bit of reset button effect to occur here in part
  505. two. Never happened.  In fact, this has uppped the ante on the entire show
  506. and was incredible.  We have some major, major issues that are looked at
  507. here but aren't neatly wrapped up by shows's end.  It could have been very
  508. easy to have Angel back to his nice self and he and Buffy make up by
  509. episode's end.  But it didn't happen.  The ending is a tragic one and one
  510. that is heart wrenching.  After the happy ending last week of "Bad Eggs,"
  511. the dull ache I feel after the events that unfolded here is almost
  512. painful.  
  513.     David Boreanz should, at the very least, be given an Emmy
  514. nod for these two episodes alone.  Not that his work isn't usually
  515. excellent, but it taken up a notch here.   Seeing his play our own sweet,
  516. loveable Angel on Monday and then turn into the vicious Angelus he has
  517. become here is wonderful. 
  518.     His scenes all rippled with pure evil energy.  I felt myself
  519. sitting up and paying a bit more attention to what he was doing as he
  520. plotted with Spike and Dru, chastised Buffy, and tormented her friends.
  521. It is such a shock, mainly due to the nice Angel we've seen in the past.
  522. And, at first, I had to wonder if it was a ruse such as he tried in
  523. "School Hard," to get in good with Spike and Dru.  None of that here.  I
  524. hate to say it, but a part of really likes Angel as a villain.  At least
  525. for a while.  We've gotten to see the good side of him, and it's an
  526. interesting change to see the evil side--the one who sired Dru and
  527. destroyed her at the same time.  It makes me wonder a bit if he has a
  528. similar plan for Buffy.  
  529.     The scene in his aparment was Buffy was purely painful to watch.
  530. It was like a kick to the stomach and it really showed that here Joss is
  531. pulling no punches.    
  532.     On the other side of the coin was Sarah Michelle Gellar's
  533. wonderful performance as Buffy.  As usual, she continues to impress and
  534. amaze and here she showed off a true range of emotions from her sobbing
  535. scene when she realizes what Angel has become to her fury and anger that
  536. is directed at Jenny and the Judge.  I loved the way her dream pointed the
  537. way to Jenny being the one who knew about Angel's curse.  It's nice to see
  538. that the seeds that were sewn in the library by the gang in Buffy's
  539. subcosious came to fruit in that one scene.  When she threw Ms. Calendar
  540. on the desk, I felt sure all hell was about to break loose.  Later her
  541. grim conviction at realizing she has to destroy Angel is chilling to watch.
  542. Just as Angel as closed off that part of his life, we see Buffy struggling
  543. with trying to separate how she felt about Angel with the need to protect
  544. herself and her friends.  I liked the juxtaposition of the time she sees
  545. Angel at school and tries to appeal to what is left of his humanity and
  546. then the final battle where she shows very little mercy (well, allowing
  547. him to live and not being able to slay him yet is a nice touch).  Angel
  548. expects her to roll over and die, but I doubt that will happen.  And the
  549. chilling reality that Giles points out at the end of Angel now taking a
  550. special interet in her really drives home that point. 
  551.     So, as the commercials promised, the story changed Buffy and Angel
  552. forever. 
  553.     But a lot of other relationships were changed forever. The whole
  554. Xander-Cordy-Willow-Oz quadralateral took on a whole shape this week.  I
  555. am glad that we saw Willow finally catch Xander and Cordy in one of their
  556. make-out sessions.  Her pain and reaction to the situation was just as gut
  557. wrenching to watch as the Buffy and Angel confrontation.  Willow's line
  558. of "You'd rather be with someone you hate than with me," was painful and
  559. rang so true.  All of the sequences between each member of this
  560. quadralateral rang so true and was dead on.  I am not sure what else will
  561. come of Xander and Cordy and whether they will admit their relationship to
  562. the whole school, but it will be interesting to see.
  563.     Add to it the nice moments in Oz's van between Willow and Oz and
  564. it's perfect. The more I see of Oz, the more I like.  I just hope the
  565. rumors I've heard about Oz aren't true since I'd like to see him become a
  566. regular part of the slaying team.  Oz has a genuine honesty to him and a
  567. way of seeing the situation at hand that is excellent. His observation
  568. that he doesn't want to make out with Willow yet was a great moment in the
  569. show.  
  570.     This whole episode was full of really great moments.  A lot of
  571. them were painful to see and hear but they just worked so well.  Giles
  572. rejection of Jenny from the slaying group was another moment.  Also, his
  573. whole final conversation with Buffy at the end which offered a bit of
  574. closure to the two-parter but also carried the events forward to the
  575. future a bit (Angel's pursuit of Buffy now) worked so well.  It's as
  576. effective as the coda was in Lie To Me (also by Joss!).  I think that
  577. episodes like this highlight the strength of the Buffy/Giles relationship
  578. and why it serves as the centerpiece for the show.  They are like family
  579. and it's easy to see why she is closer to Giles than her own mom and dad.
  580. I like that and am glad they haven't casually tossed this area of the show
  581. aside.  I would love to see more small, quiet moments like this.
  582.     Of course, small quiet stuff works because you've got big moments,
  583. like the Judge feeding at the mall.  Wow!  What a spectacular sequence.
  584.     First of all, I liked the fact that this plot was given enough
  585. screen time to keep the tension going but no so much that we missed the
  586. important moments of character.  And while I'll be the first to admit that
  587. I think it was a bit too easy to take down the Judge, it's similar to
  588. taking out the Borg on Star Trek--make a villain too powerful and any way
  589. you take them out seems a bit cheezy.  However, I can forgive that since
  590. the build up was so great.  
  591.     For one, I loved the continuity to the Halloween episode with
  592. Xander remebering his soldier training.  And if you're wondering how he
  593. could remember the layout of the base, I am willing to assume that the
  594. military uniform pieces might have come from an army surpluss store or
  595. that he just rented the gun from the costume shop and that when he
  596. transformed it brought the memories of the soldier with him.  And even if
  597. it's just a glitch, it's a nice one and I can forgive it without being too
  598. nitpicky.  :-)
  599.     Then, you had the final confrontation in the mall.  The editing of
  600. this sequence as well as the taut, crisp music really made it come alive.
  601. I also loved the arrogance of the Judge when he is struck by the arrow.
  602. Joss' direction as we see the pan of the gang and then Buffy standing atop
  603. the refreshment stand really added to the suspense. And then her using the
  604. bazooka to take out the Judge really worked.  Or at least to dissassemble
  605. him.  I like the fact that he's not dead and could come back.  So maybe
  606. his being taken down works a bit better now that I think about it a bit
  607. more.
  608.     So, all-in-all, you've got a nice epiosde that really sums it
  609. all up as to why this show is so darn good.  To be honest, I am really
  610. eager to see how all of this develops over the next several weeks and
  611. months.  And it seems like a LONG time until next Tuesday night. I
  612. honestly can't wait for the next new installment of Buffy.
  613.     So, except for a few small comments, that about wraps it up.
  614.     --Was it just me or did anyone else find it funny when the
  615. self-desribed Scooby gang went out on their errand in a van?  Visions of
  616. the mystery machine sprang to mind!
  617.     --Joyce seems oddly portrayed week-to-week.  Last week she is
  618. very authoritarian and bitchy, this week rather more supportive.  I'd like
  619. to see a bit more consistency here.
  620.     --Any bets on how long the Spike-Dru-Angel partership will last? I
  621. don't think Spike was too happy with Angel's return since it means he
  622. might not be the big dog much longer...
  623.     All in all, though, it was a great episode, worthy of being called
  624. a 2-night event.  Thanks to everyone involved for an hour of  riveting tv.

  763. my home so all we (myself and the scooby gang sans Buffy) had to fend

  873. For several reasons.  First off, the Scooby gang picked up the Judge's 
  874. parts and separated them so he couldn't reform.  We can assume they took 
  875. the parts with them which would mean no evidence of any murder.  Second, 
  876. the police in Sunnydale are "deeply stupid" according to Principal Snyder.  
  877. Lastly, apparently people in Sunnydale that witness this freaky stuff keep 
  878. quiet out of fear or stupidity, or everyone would know about all the demons 
  879. running around.
