Subject: BUFFY: SMG in Soap Opera Digest
I thought someone might be interested to read this from the most recent
SOD, August 25, 1998. In the Special Section called "A Star is Born"
The Shooting Star: Sarah Michelle Gellar
First Sightings: From 1993-1995, Gellar played Kendall Hart, Erica Kane's
illegitimate daughter.
Zodiac Moments: Bad seed Kendall blew into Pine Balley in search of Erica,
who had given her up for adoption. (As a teen, Erica had been raped by
mocie idol Richard Fields and ended up prednant. She immediately gave the
childa away and blocked the sordid experience from her mind. Total recall
caem after Kendall, envious of the attention that Erica showered on her
other daughter, Bianca, blurted our the truth.) The mother/daughter
reunion was brief: During Kendall's reign of terror, she falsely accused
Erica's husband, Dimitri,of rape and penned a trashy Mommy Dearest-style
tell-all.
Current Constellation: Gellar's star is burning bright. In addition to
starring in the teen show BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, Gellar has a prime seat
on the Kevin Williamson gravy train, hitting the silver screen with
featured roles in two of his box office smahed: I Know What You Did Last
Summer and Scream 2.
Eyewitness Reports: Like most newcomers to Pine Valley, Kendall passed
through Myrtle's boarding house and had scenes with Eileen Herlie. The
veteran actress spotted Gellar's star quality right from the start."I
thought she was extremely talented. She was bery young, and I thought [she
displayed} extraordinary talent and self-confidence. As a matter of fact,
she reminded me a bit of me," recalls Herlie. She was also impressed by
Gellar's focus and determination. "Knowing where you're going when you're
very young is quite something," the actress asserts. "And she knew where
she was going."

I was able to answer all of the UTV trivia questions but this one:What did
David Boreanaz do before he landed the role of Angel? Where did he do it?
What huge hit movie, which featured a "Chicago Hope" star was set at
Boreanaz' former place of employ? Well I know he was a valet but thats
about it. I've searched all pf the Chicagp hope stars and none are in any
huge hit movies and none did a movie in Buffalo. Does anyone know the

Actually, they probably aren't making much if any money off this
venture. You have to actually click on the banner for them to make the
money. Have any of you who've been to the site clicked on a banner
there? I haven't and I would assume if you are there clicking 1000
times, you're not likely to stop to click the banner.
And while I understand that they probably have the next three covers
picked, but what about after that. David on the cover in 4 months is
better than no David at all..IMHO.

Subject: Re: BUFFY: RE: Teen People Cover
Actually, Teen People, and all the other sites on Pathfinder charges
advertising rates per impression, not click-thru. Sponsors pay them about $30
for every thousand views of their banner. Since they get 92,000,000 page views
a month, they're probably making around $42,000 a day. And they'll make that
same amount even if no one clicks on a banner for the rest of the month. Every
time a person votes you're making them roughly 4 cents. I just don't think
this whole voting thing is just to find out who will be on the next cover. I
could set up a robot and submit a million votes for myself but I don't see them
putting myself on a cover anytime soon. The thing about David Boreanaz is, I
just don't think he has the fan base to warrant a Teen People cover. It's
possible since they're a smaller magazine, but his only real acting credit
comes from Buffy. Since Buffy is low-rated, you'd end up with a magazine with
most people saying "Who's that?" Regardless of the Teen People poll, when the
executives at People are thinking who to put on their next cover and who would
sell the most magazines, the 50 million Hanson fans easily outweigh the 3
million DB fans. That's exactly why DB got 5 minutes on fanatic and Hanson had
the majority of the program. More people were interested in seeing Hanson than
DB. So I think the chances of a Nicholas Brendon cover are almost nill. I
haven't been following with Teen People lately, but if they haven't used Katie
Holmes on a cover yet, I'd be willing to bet you'll see her within the next
three months. When the Buffy cast branches out to more things and has some
successful roles in film and TV, then maybe they'll start getting that type of
coverage. That's all just my opinion and speculation though so take it all
with a grain of salt.

Subject: BUFFY: Some new questions to think about
Okay, I am getting sick of the same undead questions popping up. I'm also
tired of really silly questions getting answered over and over again. I
think this is just an effect of Buffy rerun hell. We've got a pretty
intelligent list here, so I'll bring up some questions my mother (a casual
Buffy fan) and I came up with:
1) Can a Slayer retire if she is able to live to an age where it is nearly
impossible to slay anymore? Or what if she gets pregnant? Can another
Slayer be called?
(Note: I actually wrote a fanfic dealing with this topic, and think it
would be a cool story line for the show.)
2) If a Slayer is born blind, crippled, or otherwise unable to do her job,
or if something happens to her in childhood, will she just be passed over,
and another Slayer called?
3) How is it vampires are made "leaders". The only explanation I can think
of is the Master is the head vamp, and he made Darla and Luke, who were
seconds in command. Once the Master, Darla and Luke were all killed, Spike
took over (after dusting the Annoying One) because he was made by Angelus,
who was made by Darla. After Angelus came back, he took over since he was
older than Spike (and also Spike was in a wheelchair). Or is it just a
survival of the fittest thing?
Wouldn't it be cool if.......
1) Angel lied about vampire not being able to have children, and Buffy
finds a teenager who is a dhampir. The dhampir could feel loyality to both
their vampire and human sides. Or could assist Buffy in fighting (a la
Blade)
Trying to liven up the convo,

Anyone notice that during one seen Kendra was telling Buffy about having never
met her parents and "that's how seriously my people take the calling" or
something like that, and then she said to Buffy "Did anyone tell you what
secret identity means?" ok, she didn't say those lines in that order, but
that's not important. What's important is that it seems to me that these two
statements contradict each other. If Slaying is a big secret, big enough for
Kendra to berate Buffy for not keeping it a secret, then how could her people
take it seriously? They shouldn't know about it. Maybe I'm thinking shallowly
and stuff, but does anyone understand what I'm saying?

Maybe her people know that such a thing as a Slayer exists, but the
identity of the particular slayer would remain a secret. As for the
existance of a Slayer in Sunnydale, or the US for that matter, it just
wouldn't be accepted as something that wasn't crazy. Her culture may be
more willing to believe in the supernatural (ie...demons, zombies,
praying-mantis woman) than most of America is.

I think, due to their "chosen" status, or fate, whatever you want to call it,
they're not going to be born blind, or crippled, or rendered useless just
because they were born to do this job and they're physically built to stand up
to such things (remember Ted's whack? Not even a bruise). However, I think
it'd be interesting if once a Slayer becomes to old to effectively slay, if
she became an honorary Watcher. Was it ever established that Watchers have to
be male?

Subject: BUFFY: ComicCon98 (detailed)
Alright...This year's ComicCon was pretty good. Some things were the
same, while other things were different. I even got interviewed by a
local TV station! anyways, I was there for one thing...to see the BtVS
panel.
After buying a handful of great 8x10 photos of the cast downstaris, I
headed upstairs to scope out the room and to find out where to line up.
to my surprise they had NO lines this year. So I pulled up a chair in the
huge event room at 12:30pm and kicked it. I don't know if it's due to the
success of the show, but everywhere you went, you heard someting about
vampires. Case in point, the two panels prior to the Buffy one. The
frist out of the two was about "Blade" starring Wesely Snipes as a vampire
hunter. They showed a lot of clips, and it seems pretty good. A lot of
"eye-candy" and action. The second panel was also about vampires. it
showcased a movie called "John Carpenter's Vampires" which was directed by
kevin Williamson whom you all know directed Halloween. Now *this* movie
looks awesome! It's really gory, graphic, and SCARY! go watch both of
them.
Okay....as the coveted 4:30pm time came closer, the room began to fill up.
I managed to snag a seat in the middle of the second row. I sat next to
these 2 *cute* girls, but kept to myself. =) By 4:30, the room was FULL.
There were A LOT of security guards around the stage. there were people
everywhere with cameras, camcorders, etc. All of a sudden, I hear my
name...it was from one of those girls next to me. It turns out that I
had sitting with our two very own list members Mary and Farnaz! You may
now them by their e-mail handles, Chewie and jewels. Apparently the were
searching for a bright yellow shirt with 'Brasil' in which I said I would
wear. We all had a laugh...
there were sooooo many young girls there. Obviously to see David B.
(angel). the time has come. The panel didn't start until after the
designated time...to create tension. As I said before, only David B,
alyson hannigan, and Joss were scheduled to appear. But when the lights
dimmed, the audience went nuts. the speaker announced a surprise.
Practically the entire core cast of BtVS w/ the exception of SMG was
there!!!! woohoo!!!
David Boreanez, Seth Green, Charisma Carpenter, Alyson Hannigan, Nick
Brandon, Joss Wheadon, and Anthony Stewart Head.
I had wished that I had brought a camcorder. It was an experience of a
lifetime. the panel was sooo great and soo funny. the audience cheered
the loudest for David B. (no doubt the girls =)). Seth Green was
suprisingly very funny. He and David B seemed really chummy. Nick B was
hilarious! Even funnier than last year's con. They totally emulated
their on-screen characters with the exception of Charisma who really acted
her name.
Highlights during the 1 hr panel:
- - Seth and David B. were joking around and said that after shoots, they
dress in SMG's and CC's clothes and make adult films. They started
hugging and kissing each other! David B. tackled Seth to the ground...it
was hilarious!
- - David B was wearing shorts!
- - Seth had semi-bleached/brown hair.
- - There was a 12 year old girl that asked David B for a hug. he said yes
to the ooooh's and aahhhhhs of the entire crowd. He stepped off stage to
meet the girl in front to hug her. That was cool. The camera flashes
were blinding.
- - It was revieled by Joss that Druscilla was NOT the gypsy girl Angel
had made into a vampire. joss said that Druscilla was some coal miner's
daughter in England and was not related to jenny's clan.
- - Joss said that he may explore that whole other slayer being called
ideal since Kendra died, but he wants to stay with one slayer for awhile.
- - Joss said that he plans about a season and a half ahead. He plans the
"big things" and the little things just fill in themselves.
- - David B. *is* married.
There were a lot of other questions from the audience. Like what
influenced the actors/actresses, how they got their start. It was the
most entertaining things I've seen in a long time. They acted like a
close knit family. And everyone was sooo funny. Seth Green and Nick
Brandon especially. which goes to show that this IS indeed a great show,
and judging by the size fo the audience, a very popular one.
There were a lot of tshirts and posters for sale downstaris.
I'm pissed about one thing though. A major difference this year was that
they only allowed 100 people to get autographes from the cast! They
raffled tickets thoughout the day. 25 tickets at 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm, and
right before the panel and after the panel(extra). There were A LOT OF
angry fans and pissed off fans. during the panel, they gave everyone in
the room a ticket to get a chance to "earn" a autograph pass. 25 passess
out of 1000+ people. NOT GOOD. After the panel left, it was stone
silence as the announcer choose 25 tickets remaining tickets. It was
nerve racking. Mary and Farnaz were eating crackers and nervously waiting
for their # to be called. But none of us got called . =(
Downstairs, It was a madhouse. The DarkHorse comic area was like a
fortress of security guards. You couldn't even see the cast signing.
*sigh* I got signatures last year, but...you know how it goes.
I had a great time, except for the raffle thing. I just want to send a
shout out to Mary and Farnaz. Two very cute and nice girls. =D
I took a lot of pics. I didn't have a zoom camera though, so as soon as I
get them developed, they will be posted on my webpage. Mary (chewie),
Farnaz(jeweles), and I took a pic together. That will also be posted
pretty soon.
I'll write more when I remember more stuff. *8^)

From: Lisa Rose <cybrpaws@wco.com>
Subject: BUFFY: An Article of Her Own - 14 new pages of Cyberpaws Scans
14 new pages of Buffy-related magazine articles have been
scanned and added to the Cyberpaws Gallery "media" section at:
http://www.planetx.com/~cybrpaws/gallery/media/index.html
The new articles (at the bottom of the page) are:
Teen (Sept '98), Seth, David, SMG
YM (Sept '98), Sarah: 1 2 3 Seth: 1
Fangoria (9/98), Juliet: C 1 2 3 4
Soph Hrstyle Gd (10/98), SMG: 1 2
The best part is that Juliet Landau (Drusilla) finally
received her own article. It's a four-page spread in
the Sept "Fangoria" (an issue which is dedicated to
all things vampiric in anticipation of John Carpenter's
upcoming film, "Vampires"). There's a humorous allusion
to Dru's hypnotic powers in the caption for the photo
on page "3" of that article.
The second page of the "Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide"
article about Sarah (which discusses her transition from
AMC brunetteness to Buffy blondeness) has a sweet picture
of Sarah, similar to ones we have seen before, but
especially full and clear.
As always, these pages range from 100K to 250K in size
each, so you folks with slow dialup connections should
expect to be patient as they download (ISDN, T1, T3,
and cable folks can go wild).
"Shivers," "Spectrum," "Femme Fatales," and "Teen People"
articles will be coming soon (some of them are rather
large).
Happy Browsing!

Subject: BUFFY: watchers and comic con '98 description
In a message dated 98-08-15 23:35:41 EDT, you write:
<< Was it ever established that Watchers have to
be male? >>
Actually, in Never Kill a Boy on the First Date, Giles mentions that his
grandmother and father before him were Watchers. So perhaps if it's not a
gender thing, it's hereditary. I like the honorary watcher idea though.
Imagine if a slayer hits 30, her reflexes are naturally going to slow down. It
makes sense.
Comic Con 98!!! Wow! I'll never forget the moment when the entire cast (except
SMG) stepped out onto the stage. First Seth Green, then Charisma Carpenter,
then Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, and Nick!!!!! and Joss and Tony.
Have you ever seen clips of Beatles concerts and appearances? You know, where
everyone is screaming wildly and crying? I've always thought they were
overreacting...but I have to confess that I was screaming like every other
teeny bopper in that room. It was just such a shock. I was quietly hoping that
Nick would show up without notice, but getting ready to lament, when the
entire---ENTIRE---stepped out.
Everyone looked wonderful. Charisma Carpenter looked beautiful in this--I
guess this is the best way I can describe it, fashion jargon is not my
forte,as you can see--white sailing/business shirt. Aly looked so cute with
her new short cut and Nick let his hair grow out, so it's sort of like first
season, only he gels it back and sort of up. Seth Green's hair was verging on
bleach blond and he was hilarious...Tony Head looked very sexy with his hair
spiked and his earring. Oh my! David Boreanaz in a hawaiian shirt and shorts!
First time I've seen his legs and may I say that they're pretty cute, though
I'm sure Nick's legs would definitely outshine them....oops, is my bias
showing? =) sorry deadboy fans. The King of Cretins is for me.
But the panel was a nonstop laugh riot. The cast are obviously the best of
friends as they joked and teased each other mercilessly, particularly Seth and
David, who indulged in a wrestling match to take the other's shirt off. Seth
was being really cute and making faces for the cameras--sticking his tongue
out and kissing David. Tony was very British, his voice was so much more
playful than that of the scholarly Giles.
I especially enjoyed Charisma. As David (from the list) said, she lived up to
her name. She was just so sweet and when this young boy asked her if she was
"shingle" she asked him what he was doing after...of course Nick breaks in
with "CC, (I think it's so cute that he calls her that, but then anything he
does is cute to me) I believe that's a felony..." Hilarious. There was a
question along the lines of which cast member is most like their character,
and all of a sudden Charisma crys no and covers her face...it was too cute.
Um, what else? Well, it was a very lively audience and very enjoyable. Oh, and
Nick mentioned that crazy dance fan club of his online, but *sigh* he didn't
dance for us like the Shrine con in november.
I'm just going to gloss over the despair and anger of the whole autograph
issue. It was soooo disappointing, I had specifically bought pictures that
the cast could sign. Grrrrrrr. There were just too many people to screw over
that way. I honestly expected some sort of mutiny or something. I certainly
know that Mary (Chewie615), Phillip (her giles and spike loving friend) and
David (ngan@rohan) were planning violence over our saltine crackers...We so
deserved a winning ticket...among us we had like seven tickets...*cough*
through legal means of course. The odds were just so harsh.
But, I loved meeting Mary, whom I just adore and hope to meet up with again!
And of course Phillip--I'm sure you'll pass this on Mary--was a riot. We had
a blast while you were snagging ticket number four. And it was soo eerie to
have David sitting right next to us...we were trying to look for Susie and the
others when Mary spotted the bright yellow. Of course I looked like a freak
leaning over David to try and read the stenciled letters on his shirt to see
whether or not they spelled Brasil. But since I'm *cute* =) I'm forgiven.
Thanks, David. Hope we meet again! Can't wait to see how our picture of
despair---with our many tickets--came out. I only wish I could have met the
rest of the listers...and of course that my special zoom camera worked (Thank
God for Mary and her zoom!)...and of course that I didn't decide not to bring
my camcorder...damn and damn!
Wow, this is way too long. Sorry for the length, don't hate me, I was just too
excited and wanted to share with everyone. If anyone has any questions or
wants to hear more, email me privately.
Well, goodnight boys and girls....oh and I have a bone to pick with Joss
saying Dru was just a poor mining family girl, but that's another post.
jewels....er, Farnaz
