Subject: BUFFY: Review--What's My Line, Part Two
Warning: If my previous misspelling of the Order of Teraka's name made
you want to hurl small objects, I can only assume that seeing SPOILERS for
the conclusion of What's My Line will put you in an even worse mood,
especially if you haven't seen it. If you don't want it to be spoiled, I
suggest you turn back now. :-)
In short: Dissapointing.
One of Buffy's greatest strengths is the fact that when we get a
two part story, part two builds on the events set up in part one in
interesting, unique ways. It's almost like a chess board where Joss and
company use part one to put all the pieces into play and then in part two
yank the board out from under you, scattering the pieces all over the
place. And it usually works.
What's My Line, Part Two is the exception to that rule.
Don't get me wrong here. It's not a bad episode, really. It's
just that given how intriguing part one was, that part two ultimately
comes off as a major disappointment.
I think the biggest part of this comes from the plotline
concerning Angel and the ritual. Bascially, the pacing is so off on this
story that it's hard to watch at time. After spending close to an hour
and forty five minutes (including commercial time!) to build up to this
riutal, the final battle in the church was somewhat of a dissapointment.
Yes, we had the standard Buffy kicks vampire butt fight and she did get
some help from Kendra, but the biggest problem is that we saw no
repreicussions from the fight or what had happened. It just ended. And
this is very un-Buffy like. In Innocence, we see the resolution to the
action in the story but we also begin to see some of the consequences of
the actions Buffy has taken. Same thing in the Becoming, Part Two. Here
we only get a tacked on scene saying that Spike might be alive and leaving
us to assume that Dru has been restored. I say cut down a bit of the time
with Angel being tortured, trying to avoid the sunlight and give me a
minute or two of explanation at the end and I'm a happy camper.
However, it just didn't come to fruition. And that's ultimately
where a large portion of my disappointment lies.
The other major portion is with Kendra. It's not that it wasn't a
good idea to have another Slayer step into the breach after Buffy's death
last year in Prophecy Girl. And the idea behidn Kendra was good and she
could have been a pretty good character. I liked that fact that she was a
major contrast to Buffy's style of slaying and her reaction to Buffy
dating Angel was absolutely dead-on good. But what really annoyed me
about Kendra was her accent. I feel that the Jamacian accent was so
annoying at times that it really took away from what Joss and company were
trying to do here and that's create a character we can all care about. It
also made her seem less intelligent and resourceful than she might have
come across. I'm not saying that anyone with an accent like that is a bad
person and not intelligent. I'm just saying that for this character it was
so glaring and out of place that it really took away from taking her
seriously. And since a large portion of the story revolved around her,
that was ultimately a major disappointment.
But, it's not like What's My Line didn't have some good stuff to
it.
First of all, I have to admit that while the coda was a bit off, I
did like the scene with Oz and his diatribe on the animal cookie animals.
That was classic. I don't consider that a waste of time scene because it
actually does what I wanted--showed some pay off to a long standing, long
term building plotline. And anytime you can have a line like, "I mock you
with monkey pants" in a show, it's a good thing.
Secondly, I really, really did like the contrast between Buffy and
Kendra. It was a nice touch and good to see Kendra's reaction to the
world Buffy lives in. But Kendra brings up some interesting questions.
First of all, does her whole village know she's the slayer? Secondly\, do
her parents know? Finally, why did she train so far away from the forces
of evil and why has she waited until now to come in and take action?
Surely when they found out that Buff was dead and the Master had risen,
shouldn't she have been on the next flight out?
So, that's about it for now, I guess. Overall, What's My Line was
a good effort that fell short of what it was trying to be--a major two
night event. However, it's still enjoyable in parts to watch.
So, that about wraps it up for now, except for a few small
things...
--Is the death threat cancelled? Yes, Buffy has defeated the
three assassins who came to kill her here but does that mean the order
will stop trying?
--Xander and Cordy. The first time the kissed it was funny. The
second time, not so much. I'm not sure if I like how this has developed
or not. I think there was tension before they kissed but after they
actually got into kissing, it felt like bricks colliding. But that's just
me.
--So is Spike now not healed? I hate that we don't know. And does
anyone but me wonder if that scene was an add-on at the end. I'd heard
originally Spike and Dru signed on for five episodes and the end of this
one would be five. It makes me wonder if they weren't originally planned
to have been done away with in this story and then were added back in
later when they proved to be popular among fandom.
Well, that's about it for now. I've watched this story at least
three times now, hoping that it will click for me and it hasn't. All in
all, it's a disappointing hour of Buffy and that's a shame. It could have
been so good.
My rating: 6.0 (out of 10.0)
Next up: What a Buffy two night event should be...from January an encore
performance of Surpise and Innocence in which the Buffyverse changes
forever...
"I mock you with monkey pants."

Some comments regarding this review:
<the biggest problem is that we saw no
repreicussions from the fight or what had happened. >
The reason for this is that they wanted to leave some uncertainty about the
state of Spike and Dru at the end. We were supposed to be left curious and
wanting to know what would happen next and I think it accomplished that.
Plus, I enjoyed the interpersonal wrapup at the end ("You have the sweetest
smile I've ever seen...")
< But what really annoyed me
about Kendra was her accent.>
I read in a magazine that Bianca Lawson worked on a patois accent for
Kendra, but the director kept making her soften it so it would be more
easily understandable. This is a case where the compromise might have been
worse than the actress' choice of accents.
<Is the death threat cancelled?>
This was resolved at the beginning of Ted, I don't know if you knew that.
I know I don't personally have a problem with threads hanging over from one
show to the next--it makes me even more eager to tune in. Maybe that is a
problem for others.

First of all, David Boreanaz really does smoke in real life. So does Nicholas
Brendon. The rest of the cast to my knowlege does not. I don't know whether or
not David or James (Spike) used real cigarettes on the show. The way they pull
it off in the movies and TV is they use herbal cigarettes that don't harm your
lungs. That's how they pull of the "Cancer Man" on X-Files. The guy actually
hates smoking. I don't know for sure or not if James smokes but he definately
does a good job of making it look real.

I'm sorry, I was under the impression that we were discussing Angel, not
David. I, certainly, am in no position to detract from someone because they
smoke, as I am a smoker. I was simply saying that since Angel's probably not
fiending for nicotine, he does it for the look.

I wholeheartedly agree... who cares? It is fiction, and fiction is not
always going to be "consistent." Let's all just sit back and enjoy the
stories... so what if certain things do not seem to be right... if we
sat here and raised a red flag every time the laws of physics were
contradicted in a Bruce Willis movie, we would have to quit our day jobs.

That's all fine and dandy, but if a show sets up certain rules it should
try to follow them. One reason I lost interest in Next Generation after
awhile was that they could always "realign the main deflector dish to emit
anti-positrons" to fix any problem. If the solutions are too easy, the
writers can be lazy and the stories suffer.
And while it might not really "matter" about the inconsistencies, it's just
one more thing to discuss here in rerun hell...

Okay, I mentioned this before, but I think a few people misunderstood me.
Blooded definitely takes place after Passion (events from Passion, Phases and
Surprise/Innocence were mentioned in the book).
And it happens after Angel is re-souled. However, I don't think we can assume
that the events from Becoming happened. I have a hard time believing that
Angel and Buffy could go back to that "Bad Eggs" type of relationship after
she sent him to hell (not that I blame her...it was the only thing she could
do to save the world).
So the authors probably wrote this with the belief that Joss would eventually
give Angel his soul back....but not in the way that it happened in Becoming.
This book doesn't really fit into the Buffyverse as we know it. It's like
fanfic. A nice story to read, but none of it can be taken into account when
watching the series.
Anime Nut mentioned before that you could look at this book in an alternate
timeline sort of way. This is what could have happened if the events in
Becoming hadn't happened (but Angel had eventually been re-souled by the
Scooby Gang).
Now, that said....I did enjoy all the references to past episodes that were in
this book. It helped me relate to the characters and story much better than
the other books.

"I, Robot" was a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov dealing
with robots and featuring the character Susan Calvin. It basically
dealt with the trials and tribulations of new robotic models and
the gliches that cropped up and troubleshooting them. There was
a sequel of sorts called "The Rest of the Robots."
There was also an Outer Limits episode called "I, Robot" that
dealt with the trial of a Robot accused of murder. The remake
for the new Outer Limits series on Showtime starred Leonard
Nimoy and was directed by his son, Adam.
However, I believe the title of the Buffy episode "I, Robot--You, Jane"
is definitely a twist of the old Tarzan movie line. The 'You Jane' part
of the line was never used by Asimov or in the Outer Limits.

I guess I can see your point here. But one thing that really
bugged me was that if you watched when WML originally aired back in
November, you had to wait six weeks for the resolution in
Suprise/Innocence. I hated that part because I was left hanging all that
time. Of course, it didn't help that every time you turned around WB
advertised the new Buffy two night event, thus getting me all excited all
over again. :-)

I didn't know this tid-bit of information. Thank you for telling
it to me. It makes the episode make a bit more sense.
> This was resolved at the beginning of Ted, I don't know if you knew that.
I did know that, actually. :-) I was just trying to review the
episode as I would have had I written the review back in November when we
didn't know what was coming next. Obviously, I blew that on several
occasions by referring to other Buffy two parters that come later...:-)
> I know I don't personally have a problem with threads hanging over from one

Don't get me wrong, I love on-going plots as much as teh next
person. But my problem is that in other two parters, Joss shows the
conseuqences that are short term based on the problem we've just solved.
But they are also dealt with long-term as well. Such as Innocence when we
see Buffy and Giles' scene about what has happened means to all of them.
It's a reaction to events. Then, as season two progresses, we see how it
all plays out long term. Same with Becoming, Part Two. We see how Buffy
immediately deals with the consquences of her actions. We have yet to see
how she will deal with them long term, since season three has yet to
start. But I have faith in Joss that these will be played out.
I guess I want it all, is what I'm saying. I want immediate
consequences and then long term ones. :-)

Irritating, yes. Airing new Buffy's in January to help boost Dawson's
Creek left long periods without new eps. Mindnumbingly long periods.
Hopefully the later start date will fix that this year.
<we
see Buffy and Giles' scene about what has happened means to all of them.>
The only logical consequence of what we saw would be that the gang thought
the Spike/Dru threat was neutralized. There weren't any overhanging
emotional consequences at the end of WML like at the end of Passion.

Susan was married to her work, which was robotics and robotic

you become plain if you believe yourself unattractive.
Willow is a computer genius and believes herself (falsely) to be
unattractive.
Mark, could you refresh our memory??? Wasn't there something at one

One of the stories in "I, Robot" dealt with a mind-reading robot who, to
inflict the least amount of mental harm, told everyone whatever made them feel
the best. In Susan Calvin's case, it was that a fellow Roboticist was
attracted to her. She figured out that
the man was already involved with another woman, that the robot had lied and
why. She then drove the robot into shutting down by a verbal assault the
likes of which James T. Kirk would have loved to use on some of the computers
he drove wacky with illogic. <g>

afterwards. I guess it's tough being a vamp slayer kicking butt all day, then
switching back to your real persona.
Anyway, I thought that was a great story and since I hadn't read it anywhere,
I figured you guys might not have either. There's some other cool stuff in
this interview. She seemed to really open in this interview, not the usual
this how I got my start and I love playing Buffy, deal you usually read. I
know my guy friends want the pictures of her!

This is kind of off the subject of what this person wrote but i allways
wondered. When Angel comes back from hell will he ever be able to forgive
Buffy for what she did to him. Not that its her fault...she had to save the
world. But do you really think they could work. I really want them to get
back together cause i love Angel and buffy but i just want to know other
peoples opinions. Also with all the guilt angels going to be having from
terrorizing her when he lost his soul do you think he could ever forgive
himself. These are just thoughts but i really want to know.

I think if you look closely, she puts her hand on an unburnt place on
his chest. Probably getting a little pleasure/pain thing going
there--just like old times!

He said that Angel will bee traveling through the vortex & WHEN he gets
back, it will be LIKE 100 years in hell, & Angel WITH his soul, will be
slightly disturbed. That's pretty much a direct quote, I think.
