There's a good explanation of Nielsen ratings on the Washington Post
website at:
http://wp4.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/tv/permanent/faqnielsen.htm
Links for other Nielsen-related stuff can be found on my Television
Resources webpage at:
http://www.iaw.on.ca/~rohaly/tvschedule/tvmain.html
ObBuffy: For what it's worth, here's my Top 10 list
1. Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered
2. & 3. Becoming (both parts)
4. Invisible Girl
5. Prophecy Girl
6. Halloween
7. Angel
8. Lie To Me
9. & 10. What's My Line (both parts)
One episode that I really, really liked a lot after watching it again
this summer was Some Assembly Required. I don't think I gave it a
fair shake the first time I saw it. And I wish I could stick The
Pack in that list somewhere.

You know, I just enjoyed the hell (pardon the pun!) out of this
episode!!! It was so well written, acted, done, that I literally had to
watch it again, to see what I may have missed......
There are just so many scenes to touch on, that I don't think I will,
since others have done this much more eloquently than I, and I would
just be rehashing them.....
To add to the list of questions --
When Angel tells Xander he'll have to do CPR, because he has no breath,
1) He is panting as if from exertion (I know the Actor has to breathe,
but hey, if he can pant.....)
2) Xander could do the breath while Angel did the compressions.....
(Just a nitpik here.... :)
3) Xander stopped!!!!!! Big faux pas, here!!! Once CPR is started,
you don't stop, until either the person is declared dead, or someone
more qualified takes over.....
Sorry, had to get that off my chest, cause I just recertified my CPR...
:)
I loved this episode, probably more than just about any other......
(Becoming 1 & 2 are up there, in spite of the annoyance factor!)
Take care, all!

To all the Xander/Willow people out there: Just a question, to all of
you who have a best friend of the opposite sex.
"Have you ever tried to have a relationship with your best friend?"
Just a passing story......I did, and it fortunately turned out better
than it could have..... We had been friends for a very long time, and
had talked to each other about damned near everything.....including
dating. I mean, I was closer to her than my own sister.....but the
thought had crossed my mind, and I asked why we'd never dated.
"It'd be like dating my brother or something." she said. Anyway, we
ended up going on a date, and the first time we tried to kiss, we both
broke out in laughter(to the detriment of the rest of the movie
audience). It didn't work. We remained the best of friends, however.
So, I can see why Xander wouldn't really think of Willow 'that way'.
He's a teenaged guy, and it probably hadn't even crossed his mind...
(ducking things thrown from people who strongly disagree)
Thanks for letting me say my piece!

Am I the only one who thought that the special effect of the Hellmouth
monster looked semi-real?
The WB doesn't have a lot of money compared to CBS, NBC, and ABC, and so
their effects won't be top notch. But when I saw that monster I was a
little freaked because I thought it looked kind of real. The snake
creature in Reptile Boy was really fake looking, but the one in PG was
actually pretty good.
*shrug* But thats just MHO.

Subject: BUFFY: Comic Con and Titles
Alrighty. Since we're talking about the whole CCI thing coming up in a week
or two, I thought I'd throw my comments against the list board and see if
they stick:
I've noticed that some of you have mentioned attending the Comic Con before,
so you know the drill. It can be a tad, well, okay, VERY intimidating for
newbies. Just a quick run-through, then. Even thought the CCI is
officially Thursday through Sunday, you get most all of the good stuff
Friday and Saturday. The con crew and promoters understand completely that
many people can only afford the time and $$ for one fun-filled day, so
Saturday is usually it. This time, the two big attractions for me, Babylon
5 and Buffy, are on Saturday. The SD Convention Center is mammoth big, so
expect much time spent physically getting from one panel room to another, or
to work your way around the airplane hanger x 2 dealers' room. Expect to
give yourself the whole day. Period. Last year, we made friends with some
really cool kids who almost didn't get Joss, Aly and Nick's autographs
because they were supposed to be picked up only half an hour after the panel
ended. Bad idea. Do not put time constraints on yourself. Get there w-a-y
early (and eat a big breakfast before.) We plan to be there 8-ish. Don't
expect to leave until after 6 pm at the earliest. The reason I say this?
You will find that if there is any authorized or even unauthorized Buffy
merchandise out there, it will be at the CCI. But the time it will take you
to troll down the multitude of cramped and packed aisles will find time
flying by. You will most likely find other merchandise pertaining to other
areas of interest for you and that will add even more time to your day.
Last, but not least, you will meet people and make friends. Not even
necessarily other listers. Last year, the kids we met were the ones that
pointed me to the xmission list in the first place!! So, take your time and
relax and enjoy the event.
Tickets are $20 each day, except Sunday which is always $10. True, I did
already get my preregistration out of the way and have my tix for both days,
but you can always, always buy a ticket at the door (so to speak). The con
is extremely safe, organized and well-run (the best I've ever seen,
actually) and I've never heard of any complaints as far as the set up and
execution of panels and guest events. They have a web site:
http://www.hotsites.net/comiccon/ with a current, but not final, schedule
of events. Look through this first, then look at the Con Center map to get
an idea of where things are. Then prepare to have fun, fun, fun!!
Now, as to meeting up with other listers, by all means we should! Jason,
Jennifer, jewel, Mary and Lisa are only a few people who want to meet up.
If you'd all like, I can do the research and find a good, solid, not hard to
find or miss location and time so we can get together. Just let me know
either on list or off.
Finally, this was a fun one. I was listening to the radio (a local jazz
station) and heard a fun little number sung by a great female artist. The
song? "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." :) It made me laugh and also
called to mind that "I Only Have Eyes For You" is also a great old
jazz/blues song. Methinks Joss has an affinity towards classic tunes!

Monday night when we were watching Prophecy Girl, she turns to me and

he *is* the Maestro." And she was so surprised. She's all, "I *knew*

I thought that was really cute. We had a good laugh about it. Just

Personally, I thought that this episode was so powerful, not from an so much
from an acting perspective as for the directing and writing. During this
episode, I think I experienced every emotion known to humankind. First there
was, yea, Buffys back. Then confusion- what the heck is wrong with Buffy?
Then, anger. I really despised her towards the edn of the episode. Then by
the end, I was nearly in tears. This episode is an emotional roller coaster,
in much the same way as Becoming. Actually, I may have to ammend my first
statement. SMG's acting in this ep was spectacular. But I do really
attribute the success of this ep primarily to Joss' writing and directing.

Joss Whedon has mentioned in interviews that the reason for this--the non-
clinghanger ending for PG--lay in the fact that no one knew how well BTVS
would do and whether or not it would even make a second season (yes, that's
sacrilege now..). SMG has also said that she didn't even realize the extent
of BTVS' success because she was filming I Know What You Did Last Summer in
that little South or North Carolinan town. She didn't expect it to last, was
the impression I got, and was pleasantly surprised at the fanfare.
Off topic: Did anyone see the last episode of Models, Inc.? It got cancelled
after the cliffhanger, so no one will ever know who got shot...the groom, the
bride, the son, or the scheming ex wife...sigh. I for one would have been
horribly upset if Buffy got cancelled--that alone would have been
devastating---but imagine if the finale was a cliffhanger! I would have died!

confrontation with the Master >>
Also, when she revives, it wasn't a slow coming to, twitching limbs, coughing
up water, but a sudden gasp of breath and her eyes flew open--ala Willow
performing the resurrection ritual. plus, it was sort of after Xander gave
up. it wasn't during the actual CPR process, but during a pause where it
looked like he was just holding her to him, as if he had just accepted her
death. I always assumed her coming back was supernatural, instead of as a
tribute to Xander's foresight in taking first aid classes. But they never
discussed the supernatural possibilities...no, I saw a light and harps
beckoning me into the light. I hope the powers that be, don't just gloss over
Willow's possession next season.
Sarah Michelle Gellar's performance was stunning..watching that scene in the
library when she realizes her fate is like a punch in the gut. It made me
truly regret that BTVS was overlooked by the Emmys last year and this
year...sure, it's a fledging show and on a teeny network, and it's a
fantasy/horror show. But that's no excuse, nor any comfort. SMG should have
snagged an Emmy with that scene. Not to mention the writing and directing of
that scene. I've never seen something as potent and heart-wrenching on tv, or
half the movies that find themselves nominated for numerous awards. The
reactions Buffy gave, wondering about the new slayer, and if dying would
hurt...so powerful. sigh. There is no justice in this world.

Hmmm, I got the impression, from the scenes in Becoming and Becoming 2, that
Angelus was merely a charming rake. Sure, he probably flirted and seduced a
whole lot and that led to his downfall--Darla being a hottie and all, but
there was no maliciousness to his character, or so I thought. He was really
rather sweet. He didn't become a vampire to live forever and be strong (like
others would...Ford comes to mind)...he wanted to see the world as Darla, the
amateur travel agent, had. Just another idealistic, bored youth. Angelus was
probably bored with his life as a slight aristocrat--his clothes implied at
least some gentility--and seeking adventure, thus explaining his drinking and
whoring.

I've never gotten the idea that Angel was not a good person before he
changed. Especially when you consider how good he was once his soul was
returned. On the other hand, I'm seem to recall that Spike was not such a
good guy in his human state.

Having not seen this episode since before Becoming, I found the scene between
Buffy's mom and dad quite interesting. When Buffy's mom mentions "I'll be
happy if she makes it through the school year", I wanted to say "But she
doesn't." A bit of foreshadowing.

First off, SMG, is an Actress. why would you think this would ruin her
Career?
She is Acting! This has been brought up before and I think we will all agree,
that everyone does some acting in their everyday life! We all do some things
we dont like, but we do it and with a smile on our face. You may not like to
go to work but you do, you may not like your teachers at school but I bet you
respect them and are nice. That is a form of Acting. So, lets drop the Mello-
drama. She is an actress, she is not Gay, she is working! thats what she gets
paid for. I dont think anyone can honestly say they wouldnt do it for what
she
is getting paid!

I totaly agree! Lots of stars have performed as homosexual/lesbian
characters, and it hasn't effected their carrers at all! I applaud Sarah for
her confidence in herself and her FANS for understanding that she wants to
expand her horizon as an actress!

I am so enjoying this listserve! To say that I love this show is not
enough. It is truly the best show on tv in a long time. It has all
elements - tragedy, comedy, romance, etc. Indeed, BtVS compares to a
Shakespearean play in my mind.
I hate to think of Buffy and Angel breaking up, although I know it is
inevitable. Don't you love the way this show gets you so hooked on a
certain thing, and then snatches it from you? When Angel became evil again,
I cried like a baby. When Miss Calendar died, I cried again.
I cannot wait for the new season! Does anyone know the date of the first new
show?

For me, personally, there were a lot of great things about the ep. First of
all, Xander had a spine, which was impressive. Buffy was forced to realize
how important her friends are to her, and that there is no way she can ever
disengage them from her dangerous life. Simply put, there were a lot of
realizations made that have fueled the second season.

Because the production company wanted Buffy, the movie, to be camp. Joss has
said, frequently, that he didn't, and that he was very dissapointed in the
movie. When the WB picked up the series, it was Joss's vision: darker and
edgier with some of the light humor attached ( I would expect no less from the
man who co-wrote Toy Story).

I'm going to take up an argument with that statement. I don't think that
Angelus was not a good person at all, I think he was an uncertain person. For
whatever reasons, he was pretty much an alchoholic, with a penchant for
whoring. He didn't seem to have a real grip on who he was, and he didn't seem
(from what he's said) to fit in his era (as sometimes happens). This creates
a situation in which you don't have much of a personality to begin with. When
Darla appeared, she gave him a chance at a life, and at opportunities. If he
hadn't been turned into a vamp, who knows what he might have become (or maybe
we do, given what happened when his soul was restored)? My theory, based on
some of yours, is that when the demon set up shop, it didn't have much to
fight. That could be one explanation for the terrible creature that he was
without a soul.

I have to say, it'll probably depend on ratings, and the emotions of the cast
and crew. If they want out, or the show slides a lot, it'll end in death
(probably). Otherwise...we could enter in a realm of possibility. Does the
slayer continue until she is killed? Or is there an age limit?...Who knows.

I was once on this list, and then my schedule got crazed so I uns*bbed. Now
that I'm back, I'm about to leave for Albany and I was wondering whether there
were any fans on the list who either attend SUNY Albany, or live in the area.
Just a question. Please respond privately. Don't want to clog the list up.

WSWB is one of my top ten. I have a few reasons for liking it.
I found it to be very emotional and being a B/X fan, no matter the
outcome, I totally love the Buffy-Xander sexy dance! The look on Angel's
face was priceless! Although I did feel sorry for Willow. Then I felt
sorry for Xander when she said "Don't you wish I would," which was so
evilly on Buffy's part that I personally love that line for its evilness
and intent. The Cordy and Buffy "Spank your inner moppet" conversation
was done, well, I think in being both serious and amusing. The scene
where she breaks the master's bone with a sledgehammer was one of the
best executed scenes that I've seen.
<<I'd like to hear why this ep is so special to so mnay people... Is it
because Buffy is back? I thought she acted pretty weird in this episode,

harsh too. ("I'll kill you" ?!?!?! That's not the usual Xander fare)
I don't think it was because Buffy was back, but more like how she acted
when she came back. She had to act weird...she wasn't herself and
everyone registered this fact in one way or another. As for Xander's
"I'll kill you..." I think he was right for telling her that upfront, and
although it may seem harsh, let's recall it deals with Willow...his best
friend and he cares about her a lot. He's already lost his other best
friend Jesse last year and let's just say that his rage was taking the
better of him. In the near end, when Buffy's beating the Master to
powdery pulp, you know that he was just really angry because he tells
Willow something about "working out her issues." Which I think shows a
lot of understanding on his part.
