Subject: BUFFY: Q & A with Seth
My newspaper's TV guide has a "Q & A" column with a different person
each week, from Tribune Media Services. This week's:
Q & A
Seth Green, actor
Birthday: Feb. 8, 1974
Birthplace: Philadelphia
Home: Los Angeles
Marital Status: single
Working on: I'm on _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_, and I have several
movies coming out--_Can't Hardley Wait_ with Jennifer Love Hewitt and
_Enemy of the State_ with Will Smith.
The last good movie I saw: _Dancer, Texas, Population 81_
I stay home to watch: _ER_ and _The Larry Sanders Show_.
The book I've been reading: _A Confederacy of Dunces_ by John Kennedy
Toole.
Magazines I read: _Entertainment Weekly_, _Details_ and _Maxim_.
Favorite pigout food: hamburgers.
Favorite performers: Kevin Spacey and Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon
and Meryl Streep.
Prized possession: I'm not married to anything material.
Heroes: superheroes such as Spider-Man. He was cool because he was
young and skinny and quick-witted. His intelligence was more important
than his strength.
People always think I'm: David Faustino from _Married...With Children_.
Nobody knows I'm: close to 8 feet tall.
I wish I could stop: saying stupid things.
I'm better than anyone else when it comes to: lying.
If I could do it over: I'm pretty pleased with the way things have
turned out.
I'd give anything to meet: I'd love to hang out with Aretha Franklin.
The one thing I can't stand: phonies.
People who knew me in high school thought I was: absent a lot.
My most irrational act: trying to be someone that I wasn't. When I was
14,...I tried to be like the other kids and it didn't work for me. As
soon as I started to live for myself, everything fell in place.
If I weren't an actor, I'd be: working in a video store.
If I've learned one thing in life, it's: Never quit.
Most humbling experience: recognizing I'm not the most important person
in the world.
The three words that best describe me: big, fat dork.

I'm thinking this wouldn't be possible unless the portal they open is to
the entire spirit world and not just Hell where Angel is. I would assume
Jenny is not in Hell but in some other place. I'd like to see Jenny come
back onto BtVS, but like I said before, I think Jenny may be a cast
member of the new series Angel.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see an ancient spirit possess Willow. I
think we can all make a pretty safe bet that this will definitely be
brought up again in a future episode. Willow allowed herself to be used
for cursing Angel again and whatever it was that was inside of her is
sure to make its presence known again. It's too ripe a possibility for
Whedon to pass up.

Oz is already a senior - he should be graduating this year. As for Buffy
repeating, I don't think it would happen. For one thing, from a creative
TV standpoint, it wouldn't work. There's a big enough question over what's
going to happen after they all graduate and go to college (presumably) next

As the saying goes--"People in hell want ice water. . .".
I think Jenny's slight case of death pretty much keeps her out of the running
for the new Angel series or BTVS. Of course I could be wrong. . .Joss has
proved me so a few times in the past. But if he starts bringing characters
back from the dead I will stop watching the show. Why, you ask? Simple. If he
brings her back then her death would have been for nothing. Death in the
Buffyverse would have lost its meaning. And that would completely turn this
devoted viewer off to the show.
And I never like her anyway.

Well, this was the first time I saw the Witch, but I already knew that it
was Amy's mom who was the witch because of Betwitched, Bothered, and
Bewildered (Xander: You're a witch Amy: No remember that was my mom), but
I still thought it was a great episode. I liked how Amy's mom took over
her body, because I didn't suspect that would happen. One of the only
parts I didn't like was at the end where Amy's mom (in amy's mom's body)
was like 'I see my enemy' or whatever and then buffy kicked down that thing
so that she was looking at herself. That was very predictable. I actually
found myself thinking "Obvious much?" while watching that! all in all, i
thought it was a great episode. When i walked downstairs my mom said "I
like the vampires ones better" after watching the epp.

Subject: BUFFY: The Witch -- Nasty Cordy and more
1. The title of The Witch easily could have applied to Cordelia in
this episode. We see one of the many takes on her character and it's
not a pretty one. Cordelia is portrayed as scheming and downright
scary here. And what I think is different is that it's not really
grounded in humor or her own special brand of blissfull cluelessness.
Her appearance in the locker room when she accosts Amy -- or Amy's
Mom, to be more precise -- reminded me of her "When it comes to
dating, I'm the Slayer" stuff (without the scary lighting) from
Halloween. But it was much nastier than that. Maybe I had just
forgotten that this is what she was originally like.
And call me superficial, but looking at Cordelia here and last week in
KBD, it's pretty evident that her personality is not the only thing
about her that has grown and become, how shall I say it, more
three-dimensional.
2. Willow's fawning over Xander was pretty amusing. I especially
enjoyed the quick "What's this?" -- "What's that?" when Xander gave
Buffy the bracelet. I think her use of the term "Slayerettes" in
this episode was the first and only time it's actually been uttered
on the show.
3. Note how quickly Xander was willing to chop off Amy's head and
kill her if it would make Buffy better. It's not just Angel: for
Xander, if anything stands in the way of Buffy's well-being or
happiness (as Xander perceives it), that anything's got to go.
4. This was a really good episode that proved the series could be
successful with Buffy fighting something other than vampires. There
was discussion a while ago about the show sending messages and this
one does quite clearly. The pressures parents put on their children
in general, or parents trying to relive their life through their
children, and the evils of competitive cheerleading more specifically
are obviously the backdrop here. As usual in this category of Buffy
episode, it worked without being too preachy; probably because it's
dealt with in such a non-standard fashion.

From: Michael Hickerson <mhickers@usit.net>
Subject: BUFFY: Review--The Witch **SPOILERS!!**
Warning: No amount of magic will save you from the fact that there are
SPOILERS head for "The Witch." You have been warned...
In short: A fairly solid effort.
I'm of the opinion that the second or third episode of a new
series must be the hardest to produce. One of my reasons is that the team
has poured their heart and soul into the pilot in an effort to catch not
only the eye of network executives who will put the show in the air, but
also the eyes of we the cynical, jaded TV viewers. And so, pilots have to
build a strong premise, with lots of promise.
But then, you've got the second or third episode where you've got
to not only keep that promise, but build on it. And looking back at the
first season of Buffy, it's easy to see how much promise the show had in
the pilot and how high the expectations for the second episode would be.
And as a second episode, the Witch is a respectable entry. It
builds on the humor, the relationships, and some of the underlying
conflicts and tensions from the premiere episode. But it also expands the
Buffy universe from just slaying vamps and the Master's minions every week
to dealing with the other forces of darkness. And that's a good thing as
far as I'm concerned because let's face it, slaying vamps every week would
get old quickly.
So, the Witch does well in that regard.
But, as I watched last night, my biggest complaint was the overall
lack of focus the episode had. Yes, I liked the parallel structure of
Buffy and Amy both trying to get their mother's praise, but taking
different paths to go there and I really liked the Xander sub-plot about
asking Buffy out. But the problem was that there were lots of good ideas
here, none of which got enough screen time to hold my interest for very
long. You had the cheerleading tryouts and Amy and Buffy's desire to be
part of them. But you also had Buffy's trying to bond with mom, the Scooby
gang trying to figure out what's going on, and the exploration of the
witchcraft.
Another thing that bugged me a great deal (so much so that I
rewound my tape and watched again) was the fact that it's hard to tell the
exact moment at which Amy and her mom switched places. This is a vital
plot piece, but I am not sure when it occurs. I have some ideas when it
could, but other scenes disrupt my speculations. Surely Amy's mom
wouldn't have taken Cordy's crap in the locker room. But an earlier scene
in the science lab shows that Amy's mom has all ready taken over her body
since the solution turns blue when spilled on her. I am not sure if there
was some switching back and forth, but it seems like it would be a pain to
keep casting the spell over and over if you could stay in the body you
wanted. There's also the very real possibility that Amy would either
tell someone what was going on or find a way to escape if she was back
inside her own body.
However, the idea that Amy's mom would switch places with her was
nicely done and came as quite an interesting plottwist in the story. I
admit that I've not seen a lot of the first season and I try to keep away
from spoilers as much as I can for the episodes, so I honestly didn't see
that twist coming a mile away. The brownies helping Buffy realize that
Amy was in her mom was a nice touch.
Another part I liked was the theme of the mother trying to relive
her youth through her daughter and seeing two extremes. One was, of
course, Amy's mom, but the other was Joyce, trying to get Buffy interested
in being on the yearbook staff. Those were some nice touches that
eleveated the plot beyond the standard evil witch does bad things cliche
that it could easily have been. Overall, it was nicely done.
Howver, as I said, it lacked some focus. I was interestd in
Xander's pursuit of Buffy, but little came of it. I am assuming this wil
be an on-going first season theme and am willing to wait it out and see.
So, overall, it's a good episode that makes what could have been
a less than stellar story into a good one. Not Buffy's finest hour, but
certainly worth watching...
So, that about wraps it up for now, except a few small things...
--Giles almost giddy reaction to the other forces of evil coming
to the Hellmouth was really good. Very interesting and in character.
--Xander having all the books on witchcraft and his attempts to
keep our heroes from finding out was funny as well.
--The cat...was it supposed to guard the book for Amy's mom? If
so, it wasn't doing so hot a job. I will yowl at you and then run
away...yeah, great defense there. :-)
--On that theme--when Giles reversed the spell and Buffy was
healed, does that mean all the other girls were miraculously healed as
well? My main thought was the burn victim--did her burns go away or does
her body still have to heal naturally?
--Why don't we see more of Amy? I think she and Buffy had a good
dynamic going at the end last night. Is it the possibility that she would
be one cast member too many?
So, that's it for now. All in all, a good episode. Just not an
instant classic. Maybe time will improve it for me.
Final Rating: 7.0 (out of 10.0)
Next up: On Tuesday, Xander becomes a lady's man in the funniest
episode of season two. Monday, Buffy's got a date...and that whole
slaying thing just might stand in the way....

Actually, a mom was so intent on her daughter being a cheerleader, she
put a hit on a rival competitor's mom. The logic, (if that's what you
could call it), was the rival would be so despondent over the death of
her mother, she would not be able to try out for the squad. The whole
thing blew up in her face and she's now serving time. It was a made
for tv movie with Holly Hunter. Cheerleading and high school football
are very, very serious here in Texas. It's most frightening.

when Xander made the comment to Willow about the "railroad spike in
the head?"

According to the scene in which Amy -- in her mom's body -- tells
Giles and Buffy what's going on, the switch occurred "a few months
ago". So my take was that all of the scenes of Amy were actually
Amy's mom and there was no switching back and forth. She just tried
to act like Amy at times so as not to arouse too much suspicion, for
example her "Oh, how I hate this, let me count the ways" statement at
the cheerleading tryouts.

But she really didn't. She went home and cast that spell on Cordy.
(Where the heck was the instructor's extra brake pedal in that
driver's ed car?) She could have knocked any one of the regulars off
the cheerleading team to move up a notch, but decided on Cordy.

Just wonderiong if anyone has found out anything about the Buffy
soundtrack. I called Tower this morning, but they said that they
haven't been given a release date yet. Skeptical, I turned to several
of the on-line shopping sites, but have found nothing. I saw a pretty
comprehensive list of what's being released through June 23; Buffy was
not among them.
Does anyone know what's going on? I'm really getting frustrated.

Subject: BUFFY: Overnight ratings for The Witch
Last night's repeat of The Witch (the 4th time it's been shown)
received a 3.8 rating/6 share in the overnight Nielsen ratings for
households. Overnight ratings are based on viewing in only 40 of the
largest television markets, not the nation as a whole. The 7th
Heaven that preceded it got a 4.2/7.
On the upside, Buffy managed to retain 90% of the lead-in provided
by 7th Heaven. That's better than the 82% retention rate of the
premiere of Invasion America that aired in the Monday at 9pm EDT time
slot last week. On the downside, the raw numbers aren't as
impressive. Invasion America got a 4.2/6, compared to 7th
Heaven's 5.1/9 last week. Two weeks ago, a second 7th Heaven repeat
received a 4.8/8 in that 9pm slot.
The last time that a Buffy repeat aired on a Monday, it was
Inca Mummy Girl on January 5th and it scored a 4.1/6 in the
overnights.

I don't know which stores have it, but apparently our studio store
does...
My boss just gave me a Buffy hat (now I have 2!). It is black with
the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" logo on the front on a blue heart with
a fire flame above it. Its great!
I can't take a lunch today because of the Jack Lemmon thing (4 hours
to go!) but tomorrow I will venture on over to the lot and check out
what is there and update ya'll later.
