  256. I'm thinking this wouldn't be possible unless the portal they open is to
  257. the entire spirit world and not just Hell where Angel is.  I would assume
  258. Jenny is not in Hell but in some other place.  I'd like to see Jenny come
  259. back onto BtVS, but like I said before, I think Jenny may be a cast
  260. member of the new series Angel.

  290. Yeah, it would be interesting to see an ancient spirit possess Willow.  I
  291. think we can all make a pretty safe bet that this will definitely be
  292. brought up again in a future episode.  Willow allowed herself to be used
  293. for cursing Angel again and whatever it was that was inside of her is
  294. sure to make its presence known again.  It's too ripe a possibility for
  295. Whedon to pass up.

  321. Oz is already a senior - he should be graduating this year.  As for Buffy
  322. repeating, I don't think it would happen.  For one thing, from a creative
  323. TV standpoint, it wouldn't work.  There's a big enough question over what's
  324. going to happen after they all graduate and go to college (presumably) next
  325. season for Joss in introduce the dilemma of Buffy being a grade behind
  326. (unless he wants to replace the entire cast after next year).

  442. for the new Angel series or BTVS. Of course I could be wrong. . .Joss has
  443. proved me so a few times in the past. But if he starts bringing characters
  444. back from the dead I will stop watching the show. Why, you ask? Simple. If he
  445. brings her back then her death would have been for nothing. Death in the
  446. Buffyverse would have lost its meaning. And that would completely turn this
  447. devoted viewer off to the show.

  479. Well, this was the first time I saw the Witch, but I already knew that it
  480. was Amy's mom who was the witch because of Betwitched, Bothered, and
  481. Bewildered (Xander: You're a witch  Amy: No remember that was my mom), but
  482. I still thought it was a great episode.  I liked how Amy's mom took over
  483. her body, because I didn't suspect that would happen.  One of the only
  484. parts I didn't like was at the end where Amy's mom (in amy's mom's body)
  485. was like 'I see my enemy' or whatever and then buffy kicked down that thing
  486. so that she was looking at herself.  That was very predictable.  I actually
  487. found myself thinking "Obvious much?" while watching that!  all in all, i
  488. thought it was a great episode.  When i walked downstairs my mom said "I
  489. like the vampires ones better" after watching the epp.

  504. OK, me and my friend Laura were watching "The Witch" and at the end, her mom
  505. is trapped inside the cheerleading trophy...and in "Phases" Oz is standing at
  506. the trophy case, and Willow comes over and asks him what he's looking at and
  507. Oz says "This cheerleading trophy,  It's like its eyes follow you wherever you
  508. go. I like it."

  511. watching Buffy when Bad Eggs aired...and I just now got that!  People probably

  538. 1.  The title of The Witch easily could have applied to Cordelia in
  539. this episode.  We see one of the many takes on her character and it's
  540. not a pretty one.  Cordelia is portrayed as scheming and downright
  541. scary here.  And what I think is different is that it's not really
  542. grounded in humor or her own special brand of blissfull cluelessness.
  543. Her appearance in the locker room when she accosts Amy -- or Amy's
  544. Mom, to be more precise -- reminded me of her "When it comes to
  545. dating, I'm the Slayer" stuff (without the scary lighting) from
  546. Halloween.  But it was much nastier than that.  Maybe I had just
  547. forgotten that this is what she was originally like.
  548.  
  549. And call me superficial, but looking at Cordelia here and last week in
  550. KBD, it's pretty evident that her personality is not the only thing
  551. about her that has grown and become, how shall I say it, more
  552. three-dimensional.
  553.  
  554. 2.  Willow's fawning over Xander was pretty amusing.  I especially 
  555. enjoyed the quick "What's this?" -- "What's that?" when Xander gave 
  556. Buffy the bracelet.  I think her use of the term "Slayerettes" in 
  557. this episode was the first and only time it's actually been uttered 
  558. on the show.
  559.  
  560. 3.  Note how quickly Xander was willing to chop off Amy's head and 
  561. kill her if it would make Buffy better.  It's not just Angel: for 
  562. Xander, if anything stands in the way of Buffy's well-being or 
  563. happiness (as Xander perceives it), that anything's got to go.
  564.  
  565. 4.  This was a really good episode that proved the series could be
  566. successful with Buffy fighting something other than vampires. There
  567. was discussion a while ago about the show sending messages and this
  568. one does quite clearly.  The pressures parents put on their children
  569. in general, or parents trying to relive their life through their
  570. children, and the evils of competitive cheerleading more specifically
  571. are obviously the backdrop here.  As usual in this category of Buffy
  572. episode, it worked without being too preachy; probably because it's
  573. dealt with in such a non-standard fashion.

  706. Warning:  No amount of magic will save you from the fact that there are
  707. SPOILERS head for "The Witch."  You have been warned...
  708.  
  709. In short:  A fairly solid effort.
  710.  
  711.     I'm of the opinion that the second or third episode of a new
  712. series must be the hardest to produce.  One of my reasons is that the team
  713. has poured their heart and soul into the pilot in an effort to catch not
  714. only the eye of network executives who will put the show in the air, but
  715. also the eyes of we the cynical, jaded TV viewers.  And so, pilots have to
  716. build a strong premise, with lots of promise.  
  717.     But then, you've got the second or third episode where you've got
  718. to not only keep that promise, but build on it.  And looking back at the
  719. first season of Buffy, it's easy to see how much promise the show had in
  720. the pilot and how high the expectations for the second episode would be.  
  721.     And as a second episode, the Witch is a respectable entry.  It
  722. builds on the humor, the relationships, and some of the underlying
  723. conflicts and tensions from the premiere episode. But it also expands the
  724. Buffy universe from just slaying vamps and the Master's minions every week
  725. to dealing with the other forces of darkness.  And that's a good thing as
  726. far as I'm concerned because let's face it, slaying vamps every week would
  727. get old quickly.  
  728.     So, the Witch does well in that regard.
  729.     But, as I watched last night, my biggest complaint was the overall
  730. lack of focus the episode had.  Yes, I liked the parallel structure of
  731. Buffy and Amy both trying to get their mother's praise, but taking
  732. different paths to go there and I really liked the Xander sub-plot about
  733. asking Buffy out.  But the problem was that there were lots of good ideas
  734. here, none of which got enough screen time to hold my interest for very
  735. long.  You had the cheerleading tryouts and Amy and Buffy's desire to be
  736. part of them. But you also had Buffy's trying to bond with mom, the Scooby
  737. gang trying to figure out what's going on, and the exploration of the
  738. witchcraft.  
  739.     Another thing that bugged me a great deal (so much so that I
  740. rewound my tape and watched again) was the fact that it's hard to tell the
  741. exact moment at which Amy and her mom switched places.  This is a vital
  742. plot piece, but I am not sure when it occurs.  I have some ideas when it
  743. could, but other scenes disrupt my speculations.  Surely Amy's mom
  744. wouldn't have taken Cordy's crap in the locker room.  But an earlier scene
  745. in the science lab shows that Amy's mom has all ready taken over her body
  746. since the solution turns blue when spilled on her.  I am not sure if there
  747. was some switching back and forth, but it seems like it would be a pain to
  748. keep casting the spell over and over if you could stay in the body you
  749. wanted.   There's also the very real possibility that Amy would either
  750. tell someone what was going on or find a way to escape if she was back
  751. inside her own body. 
  752.     However, the idea that Amy's mom would switch places with her was
  753. nicely done and came as quite an interesting plottwist in the story.  I
  754. admit that I've not seen a lot of the first season and I try to keep away
  755. from spoilers as much as I can for the episodes, so I honestly didn't see
  756. that twist coming a mile away.  The brownies helping Buffy realize that
  757. Amy was in her mom was a nice touch.  
  758.     Another part I liked was the theme of the mother trying to relive
  759. her youth through her daughter and seeing two extremes.  One was, of
  760. course, Amy's mom, but the other was Joyce, trying to get Buffy interested
  761. in being on the yearbook staff. Those were some nice touches that
  762. eleveated the plot beyond the standard evil witch does bad things cliche
  763. that it could easily have been.  Overall, it was nicely done.  
  764.     Howver, as I said, it lacked some focus.  I was interestd in
  765. Xander's pursuit of Buffy, but little came of it.  I am assuming this wil
  766. be an on-going first season theme and am willing to wait it out and see.
  767.     So, overall, it's a good episode that makes what could have been
  768. a less than stellar story into a good one.  Not Buffy's finest hour, but
  769. certainly worth watching...
  770.     So, that about wraps it up for now, except a few small things...
  771.     --Giles almost giddy reaction to the other forces of evil coming
  772. to the Hellmouth was really good.  Very interesting and in character.
  773.     --Xander having all the books on witchcraft and his attempts to
  774. keep our heroes from finding out was funny as well.
  775.     --The cat...was it supposed to guard the book for Amy's mom?  If
  776. so, it wasn't doing so hot a job.  I will yowl at you and then run
  777. away...yeah, great defense there.  :-)
  778.     --On that theme--when Giles reversed the spell and Buffy was
  779. healed, does that mean all the other girls were miraculously healed as
  780. well?  My main thought was the burn victim--did her burns go away or does
  781. her body still have to heal naturally?
  782.     --Why don't we see more of Amy?  I think she and Buffy had a good
  783. dynamic going at the end last night.  Is it the possibility that she would
  784. be one cast member too many?
  785.     So, that's it for now.  All in all, a good episode.  Just not an
  786. instant classic.  Maybe time will improve it for me.
  787.  
  788. Final Rating: 7.0 (out of 10.0)
  789.  
  790. Next up:  On Tuesday, Xander becomes a lady's man in the funniest
  791. episode of season two.  Monday, Buffy's got a date...and that whole
  792. slaying thing just might stand in the way....

  817.      Actually, a mom was so intent on her daughter being a cheerleader, she 
  818.      put a hit on a rival competitor's mom.  The logic, (if that's what you 
  819.      could call it), was the rival would be so despondent over the death of 
  820.      her mother, she would not be able to try out for the squad.  The whole 
  821.      thing blew up in her face and she's now serving time.  It was a made 
  822.      for tv movie with Holly Hunter.  Cheerleading and high school football 
  823.      are very, very serious here in Texas.  It's most frightening.

  849. Giles and Buffy what's going on, the switch occurred "a few months 
  850. ago".  So my take was that all of the scenes of Amy were actually 
  851. Amy's mom and there was no switching back and forth.  She just tried 
  852. to act like Amy at times so as not to arouse too much suspicion, for 
  853. example her "Oh, how I hate this, let me count the ways" statement at 
  854. the cheerleading tryouts.

  904. Last night's repeat of The Witch (the 4th time it's been shown) 
  905. received a 3.8 rating/6 share in the overnight Nielsen ratings for 
  906. households.  Overnight ratings are based on viewing in only 40 of the 
  907. largest television markets, not the nation as a whole.  The 7th 
  908. Heaven that preceded it got a 4.2/7.
  909.  
  910. On the upside, Buffy managed to retain 90% of the lead-in provided 
  911. by 7th Heaven.  That's better than the 82% retention rate of the 
  912. premiere of Invasion America that aired in the Monday at 9pm EDT time 
  913. slot last week.  On the downside, the raw numbers aren't as 
  914. impressive.  Invasion America got a 4.2/6, compared to 7th 
  915. Heaven's 5.1/9 last week.  Two weeks ago, a second 7th Heaven repeat 
  916. received a 4.8/8 in that 9pm slot.
  917.  
  918. The last time that a Buffy repeat aired on a Monday, it was 
  919. Inca Mummy Girl on January 5th and it scored a 4.1/6 in the 
  920. overnights.
