This is in reference to a recent discussion of talking during BtVS.

Being something of a zealous missionary for Buffy, I have introduced
several friends and colleagues to the show. The best method I've found
is to tape a particular episode, then show it to the initiate, pausing
each time a new character enters, and explaining who he or she is, and
how he or she relates to the other characters.
Which brings me to an interesting question for this list: what episode
is ideal to show someone who's never seen the show before? I certainly
wouldn't want *my* first BtVS experience to be "Go Fish!"
I'd like to hear anyone's opinions. Although it's not the best one ever
made, the werewolf episode ("Phases"?) has worked well. It's not too
serious, but well written and somewhat unpredictable. It also makes
references to previous episodes (such as Xander's experience in "the
Pack"), thus whetting ones appetite for more Buffy, but isn't
incomprehensible for someone who hasn't watched to show before. Also,
who can't help but be amused at the scene of Xander "outing" the
football player, under mistaken circumstances -- a prime example of just
how clever this show can be when it want to?

Hmmm...I guess we never discussed it. I like it as one. I can't say I liked
one part better than the other. I guess I really liked it the best because it
was a lot of Spike and Dru and it just incorporated every element that makes
the show great. Is that Vague enough for you? Just a general feeling, I guess.

Yeah, he is a total sweetie. Our producers liked him so much they kept writing
him into the episodes even when it didn't really fit the story.
Thanks for the welcome pookie. I can't wait for tomorrow night!

But you record next weeks trailer and the credits(which usually have a DC promo on
half the screen. I don't know if they count the intro and buffy will be right back
etc. as 'promotional', but that could get it close to the 36 minute mark. We'll

I've found that either "Welcome to the Hellmouh" (*sings off-key* "Let's start
at the very beginning. . . a very good place to start!") or "School Hard"
works well. WttH gives a really good introduction to the first season and the
show in general. That said, however, since the stories and characters have
gone through so many changes in the second season "School Hard" is also a good
"first time" episode. It would be a shame not to see Spike's first appearence.

I totally understand about the explaining and all that. I remember the
first time I ever sat down with my friends to watch a BtVS episode was
when they watched "When She Was Bad." One friend had only watched "The
Pack" and liked it and the other only watched maybe the WTTH, but neither
had really gotten into the show. They liked it enough, but I had to sit
there an explain everything! And it was on actual TV (WGN) so I couldn't
stop to tell it.

This question had been brought up before. I seriously suggest WTTH or "The
Witch." "The Witch" isn't a big revelation story or anything, but it does
give a dose of what the characters are like, and it's a great story. But
if you want to start with the second season, yes, "School Hard" is a good
one. Spike and Drusilla are entered into the picture and that's pretty
much all second season revolves around (other than the Buffy/Angel thing).

You know, it's funny - I watched my first episode alone, and I didn't have
much trouble following it. (A friend had it on the same tape as something
else they were recording for me and since everyone was saying how wonderful it
was I figured why not try it.) I asked my questions later and it worked just
fine for me.
<< Which brings me to an interesting question for this list: what episode is

Well, speaking from my own experience, the one that totally hooked me was the
one where Buffy and Angel were inhabited by the souls of the dead teacher and
student (I think). There was something about the chemistry between Buffy and
Angel that absolutely captivated me. I knew from that moment on that I simply
must see more. Fortunatly, a friend had about 8 episodes on tape so I got to
see some, but I still wish I'd seen more of them. :::sniff:::
But it wasn't just the Buffy/Angel connection that hooked me. There was
Drucilla who was wigging out in that fashion where she gets some psychic vibe
and it occurred to me that many actors would come across totally fake but she
was just fantastic. And then there was Spike. I know he's bad, but he's just
got this incredible presence, especially when he kicked off the
wheelchair....:::shiver::: That would be my recommendation to a newbie. Hey,
it got me. <g>
Oh, and BTW, if Go Fish had been the first one I'd seen, it's entirely likely
I wouldn't have watched again.

Hmm....I do believe I apologized earlier, but if you want to continue.
Why would that defeat the purpose? It only said who was going to be on
the show, and not even that directly. I could have been referring to a
phone message, or a letter from her. Sure, if I put what happened to her
it would have been ruined, but I didn't.
It was a simple mistake, not the ruin of the universe.

I'll address this onlist, since obviously some clarification is in order.
Jill and I ask that not only proper spoiler protection be observed in the
form of space before the actual spoiler, but also that people are careful
wtth their subject lines. In other words, don't give away a big spoiler in
the subject line.
What's a spoiler?
A spoiler is *anything* about an upcoming episode *other* than what was
shown in the teaser at the end of the previous week. The teaser is fair
game and doesn't need spoil protection. However, stuff from posting
boards, stuff from the TV Guide, stuff from online chats with cast/crew are
*all* spoiler fodder and should be properly protected. And that includes
protection in the subject line as well as the other usual stuff.
I can't remember specifically, but I don't remember seeing the subject of
this particular spoiler issue in last week's preview, which means it's
something that should have been given away in the subject line of a spoiler
post.
Jill, Lisa Rose and I have occassionally talked about banning spoilers
altogether from the list because they cause so many problems, this being a
case in point. However, we realize that there are many people who *do*
like to read spoilers, so proper spoiler protection is the best solution.
Those who like to read spoilers are protected, while those who don't aren't
inadvertantly spoiled. It's every listmembers job, whether you like or
don't like spoilers to always remember your fellow list members when you
post spoilers. When in doubt, always spoil protect with fairly vauge
subject lines, please.
And, as always, once the episode airs in its east coast timeslot (Tuesdays
at 8pm EST), there is no need to spoil protect, though you might want to
put the episode title in the subject line as a courtesy.
Thanks,

an archway. (I can only assume this is the person called Darla, I haven't
seen the first season). He walks towards her, and she slowly walks past
the arch. He tells her that she shouldn't be walking alone in a area with
the reputation that one does, and he offers to protect her. She asks if
he's up to the challenge, and he says he is, asking her where's she's
from. She tells him she can shown him the world, and she closes him to
close his eyes. After he does her eyes change and the bites him. She
puts some blood on her cleavage, and has him drink it.
[Present]
Angel walks behind tress, watching Buffy slay two vampires in the
graveyard. She kills a vampire, and tells the other to tell Angel that
she wants to fight him face to face. The vampire continues to fight, and
she has to destroy him. Xander suddenly appears from behind another
tombstone, standing up and rubbing his head. Xander asks why she doesn't
just let him die, and she says "It'll be over soon". Angel hears her, and
replies "Yes love, it will."
[Theme song, Commercial. Ottawa Senators winning 4-2]
In a lab a huge stone case covered in clay is standing in the middle.
It's covered in ancient text. Giles enters and the lab manager welcomes
him, telling him that he was told Giles was an expert at reading ancient
text. Giles takes a look at the writing, and the lab worker asks if he
can read it. Giles says that he doesn't want to say anything about the
text until he's sure about the translations. Giles takes a sample of the
clay, and notices that the block of stone has a seal on it. Giles asks
the scientist if they've opened it, and they say they thought it was a
solid block of stone. Giles asks them not to open it until they translate
the text.
In the cafetria Xander acts out Buffy killing Angel with fishsticks.
Seated around the table are Xander & Cordillia, Buffy, and Willow sitting
in Oz's lap. Buffy says that she's ready to kill Angel. Buffy says
that she's having class problems, and Willow offers to tutor her. Xander
and Cordillia playfight when Snyder walks up behind them and tells them to
stop. He asks Willow if there's a chair shortage, and Willow gets off
Oz's lap to sit in another chair. Buffy talks back to Snyder and he asks
for a reason to throw her out.
[London, 1860, Angel: Vampire, Drucillia: Unchanged]
In a church Drucilla goes into a confession booth to talk to a priest.
Unkown to her Angel is on the other side of the booth, having just killed
the priest. Angel pretends to be a priest, and asks about her sins. She
says that her mother thinks she's cursed because she's able to see things
before they happen. Angel says that she's a Devil Child, the Spawn of
Satan, and evil. He tells her she'd should embrace evil for her own good.
Dru pleads, saying that she wants to be good and pure. Angel finnaly says
"God is watching you" before she leaves the booth.
[Present]
Dru comes down the stairs in thier new home, saying that she met a new
man. She says that she didn't like him because he got stuck in her
teeth. She tells Spike about the moon whispering to her, and Angel comes
in asking her if she's had a vision. She says that something terrible is
coming from the museum, in a tomb located in a lab. Angel is amazed that
she saw that so clearly, until Spikes shows him the paper detailing the
tomb, where Dru read it. Angel tells Dru that it'll stop whispering soon;
it'll start screaming.
In the computer room Willow tries to tutor Buffy, who becomes fustrated.
Her pencil suddenly rolls off her book into the space between the desk and
cabinet. Buffy reaches down and grabs her pencil. She suddenly stops and
lets the pencil roll down the book again. As she gets the pencil she
notices the disk and hands it to Willow. Willow says hte disk must be
from Jenny, and loads it on her computer. The restoration script is
translated, and they both stare at the computer screen in shock.
[Commercial; Ottwawa Sens winning 3-2 (Go Sens Go!)]
[Past]
Angel runs through the forest, pushing through trees and bushes. In a
clearing a bunch of gypses are chanting. Angel continues to run towards
the clearing. An old women is chanting, with an Orb of Thesilie(sp?) in
front of her. Just as Angel enters the clearing the orb lights up, then
dissapears, At the same time Angel's eyes glow, and he stops. A man
comes towards him and tells Angel "Good, it hurts doesn't it". Angel says
he doesn't remember what happened, and the man says he will soon, and
remember the pain of killing so many people. Angel breaks down and cries.
[Present]
In the library the gang talks about the restoration spell, and they
decide that Angel killed Jenny after she found the spell. They debate
about wether or not they can curse him again, and Willow claims that she
has been researching Jenny's black art links. Xander begins to protest,
saying "Who cares", and that Angel should be killed. Buffy softly says "I
care." Xander starts arguing again, talking about Jenny and provokes
Giles. Cordillia starts to back him up, when he snaps at her, not
noticing that she was helping him, asking why she doesn't stand up for
him. Buffy breaks up the fight, and Xander says that she wants to forget
about Jenny to bring back her boyfriend.
In the lab with the tomb the scientist continues working until he hears
some whispering. He stands up and walks over to the tomb, as the
whispering grows louder. Angel, Dru, and Spike kill the scientist.
In Buffy's room she talks to Willow over her phone, when Willow swears.
Buffy is amazed, and starts to pack away her slaying gear. As she goes
through her drawer she finds the ring Angel gave her, and tells Willow
she'll talk to her later.
Buffy patrols in the graveyard when she hears footsteps. Someone steps
out of the bushes behind her and she wirls around to see Kendra, the
vampire slayer. They have their usual exchange, and Buffy says that
she's probably here because her watcher sensed dark power rising in
Sunnydale. Kendra agrees.
In the lab again the 3 some of vampires are present. Angel says that the
demon in the tomb came to the world to swallow it. It was spiker before
it could breath, and it turned to stone. It was burried where no one,
human or demon, would look for it. They open the tomb, and see a stoned
demon with a knife in it. Angel says that if the sword was pulled out,
everyone would go to hell.
[Commercial; Sens winning 4-2]
In the library the gand and Kendra talk about 'Akaufla?' and the death of
the scientist. Giles explains that the demon universe exists seperate
from ours, but if this demon breathed it would create a vortext that would
suck this world into theirs. Any non-demons would suffer horrible pain.
They say that Willow's their only hope to stop Angel, and Kendra presents
Buffy a knife forged by the person who staked the demon in the past. They
talk about they spell, and Giles says that he's been using an Orb of
Thesalie as a paper weight in his room.
In Vamp's home Spike is walking around when he hears Dru entering. He
quickly runs to his chair and sits down again. They go out to a place
where Angel drags a human man in. Angel chants the spell to pull out the
sword in the demon, and sucks the mans blood.
[Manhattan, 1996, Angel: Soul Resotredby Gypses]
Angel is dressed like a bum, and tries to chase a rat for blood. Another
young man walks in, and says that Angel stinks of death. The man jokes
about Angel being a vampire, and shows that he knows that Angel has had
his soul restored. The man's name is Whistler and claims to be a demon,
not a vampire. He says that after 90 years of having a soul, Angel ca
become a person. Whistler says that he wants to show Angel something.
[LA, 1996]
An old car, with windows spray painted over in black pulls up in front of
a school. The window rolls down and we see Angel looking out. Buffy
walks out of the school, talking to her friends. In this scence she acts
like a snob and spoiled. Her hair is different, I believe, longer. She
siats on the step and a man approachers her. He tells her that her
destiny awaits, and she's the chosen one to fight vampires. He tells her
he has someting to show her.
In a graveyard Buffy is being fought by a vampire, while she wears a
bright outfit. She awkwardly holds a stake, and doesn't fight back well.
Angel watches her from the bushes. She knocks the vamp down and stabs
him. She says "Opps, missed the heart" and pulls out the stake and stabs
him the heart. She goes home to her mother and father, and she says she
was talking to Tyvas. She goes out to her bathroom, and her mother and
father can be heard fighting. Angel has been watching from the bushes
again. She looks in the mirror and cries.
In the sewer Angel talks to Whistler, saying that he wants to become
someone and help Buffy. Whistler says it's dangerous work, but Angel
wants to learn from him as long as he doesn't have to dress like him.
[Present]
Angel approaches the stone demon, and grasps the knife. Blue light
courses through the knife.
[Commercial; Sens winning 4-3]
Angel starts to pull the knife out, but the light flashes red and he's
thrown away. Spike says "Someone wasn't worthy" while Dru worries and
Angel says he missed something in the ritual. Angel says that it's time
they turned to an old friend for help.
In the hallway a person in a black cloak walks into Buffy's class. Smoke
starts to come from the person as they open the hood and a female vamp
talks to Buffy. The class screams and backs away, while Buffy patiently
sits. The vamp tells Buffy that she will come to him tonight in the
graveyard, before finally burning in the sunlight.
In the library she says that as long as she's fighting Angel he won't be
able to destory to world. Willow says that the curse will take half an
hour to complete, and Xander wishes her good luck. Kendra gives Buffy a
stake, saying it's her lucky "Mr. Pointy". Buffy says "Remind me to get
you a stuffed animal".
In the graveyard she walks in and sees Angel standing around. They talk
about the demon, and Angel says he misses her. He says they want to get
back together, then they fight.
Meanwhile in the Library, Willow begins the curse. All of a sudden the
vampires enter, attacking. Giles is knocked out, a bookcase falls onto
Willow, and Xander fights. (Oddly, it looked as if there was another
person fighting, someone with blonde hair (not buffy)).
In the graveyard Buffy and Angel fight, Angel tells her he wanted to get
her away for the others and she falls for it every time. She runs away
towards the school. In the library Dru walks in, with vampires
surrounding Kendra. Dru tells them to stop, and they back off. Dru and
Kendra begin to fight, until Drucilla grabs Kendra's throat. Drucilla
stares into Buffy's eyes and puts her under a spell. As Kendra stands
under the spell Drucilla slits her throat with her nails. The vamps takes
Giles and leave.
Buffy enters the school in slow motion, as a voiceover of Whistler, I
belive, begins. She enters the library, and stops. She stares at Kendra
and runs to her. She sees that KEndra is dead and takes her hand. As she
does a hand points a gun at her and says "Freeze".
Whistler says "You'll see what I mean".
[To Be Continued]
Well, that's all for this week. The continuation of the season finale
will be next week. I'll post another review then!
