You know, my favorite quote kind of reflects upon this, while it deals

Subject: Re: BUFFY: Soulless Demons?
<Someone wrote>I think it is important to remember that they are soulless
demons, not just converted humans.>
Regarding vampires as soulless demons. I just had to throw this idea
out there for people to mull over. Everything depends on one's
perspective. Giles is the one who told us (the audience + buffy and
gang) that vampires are soulless demons who have nothing but the
memories perhaps even the mannerisms and personality of the human they
were in life.
I never entirely believed that statement. Speaking from a psychological
background it sounded too much like a rationalization. Think about it;
if it was your job to train and advise another person to kill something
on a regular basis there has to be a justification or something that
would make it easier to accept personally. Buffy had to be perceived as
a Hero by the audience as well so to make it easier to accept Buffy being
the Slayer and duty bound to kill vampires it had to be accepted by all
as being the right and moral thing to do.
It happens quite often in WAR the enemy is always dehumanized to make it
easier to kill them. The Vampires would give us quite different
definitions of what they are; if they were ever asked. The TRUTH of
course would land somewhere in the middle as I will attempt to describe
below.
The watchers as a group have convinced themselves that this must be so,
and have taught it as dogma to the Slayers. Vampires are soulless demons
who must be killed.
Spike, Drusilla, and Scholar Vampire have proved that they are not just
"demons." They all stank of humanity to the Judge and have demonstrated
emotions, and behaviors consistent to being human. They still retain a
basic social structure with leaders, lovers, and lackeys. The way things
are done, rituals St. Vigius, " nothing ever happens on Halloween."
Remaining in a community.
No I believe that Vampires are NOT the soulless demons that Giles would
wish us to believe.. Instead They are akin to a dead human who is
possessed with a demon that is addicted to blood. The demon resides in
the place where the soul use to be. The 'evil urges' if you will are in
control. The demon in the person is not a " conscious individual demon
personality" just an overwhelming feeling to do the perverse evil act
rather than a good or neutral one. The person is still there just
changed toward the far evil end of the spectrum instead of the middle.
It is just easier to condone what Buffy does if you believe that you are
killing a demon. End of statement. It would be much more difficult to
kill someone you believe still is a person, containing a shred of
humanity; EVEN if that person is a cold-blooded murderer. Look at all
the people who have a trouble with capital punishment.
And it is the situation that Buffy finds herself in now. Angel/us is a
demon that she should have killed when she had the chance. But she
didn't.
Let us take for example Cain the werewolf hunter/killer. In his point of
view werewolves are beasts/animals that he kills for profit. In his
opinion he is doing a service for humanity. Which, everyone must admit
he did do, at least if you weren't a werewolf or one of it's loved ones.
Werewolves are capable and probably do attack/kill humans. Oz didn't
but hey it was his first time as a werewolf etc. and we don't really know
if the chains would have worked.

Even though they've never referred to Xander as having any siblings, I kinda
thought maybe he had a brother or something. In Surprise, Xander calls his
mother (actually addresses her as his mom, right?) and says something like,
"Hi Mom, it's me....yeah, Xander." I first thought maybe she had mistaken his
voice for her husband's, but her husband wouldn't have called her mom, so I
thought maybe he had a brother who may have sounded similar on the phone. Or
it was the Chinese place returning her call, telling her how to warm up the
food in the microwave, in case they haven't gotten a stove yet. Or maybe her
real name is "Mom", so it could've been any male calling. Or maybe Xander's
mom just doesn't recognize her son's voice.... : ) Let's ponder.........

First of, regarding vampire souls:
Traditionally, a vampire was a dead body possessed by either a demon, or
the soul could not leave the body due to some unfortunate occurance,
such as dying rather violently, being relfected in a mirror, or an
animal jumping over the corpse. Killing the vampire (staking, burning,
etc.) freed the person's soul.
Now, Xander's family:
I'm guessing older brother, maybe....I'm thinking the fact he had to
tell his mom who he was was because of the way that they want to portray
his family's attitude, for lack of a better word. Was that a sentence?
Anyhoo,
1. His dad tried to sell him to some Armenians once
2. He had to tell his mom who he was
3. Willow asks if they even have a stove.
Is anyone else getting a mental picture of like, the total opposite of
your traditional 50's TV family?

He wasn't a real vampire, he was a kid in a vampire costume -- one

can see him in one of the pre-spell trick-or-treating scenes,

I've wondered about the sibling thing before--with the exception of Buffy, I

In Halloween, Willow was running around as a ghost for more than 4

she was turning into a ghost. It's sort of amazing that at the end

I completely agree with Brian that it's meant to be diametrically opposite
of the 50s TV sitcom family. My take on his having to tell his mother who

parents do when they haven't seen their kid for an extended period of time.
I mean, as much as Buffy, Willow, and he go out, he must be home to sleep

I felt the need to step in here. I have been listening to this
conversation, and it appears that everyone thinks that Dru taunting
Angel in WML was having to do with *her* feelings, and they are confused
by her sudden change in attitude toward Angel. In What's My Line, when
Drusilla is torturing Angel with the holy water, she reminds him of all
the horrible things he did to her. Now, *after Angel loses his soul*,
she is suddenly very nonchalant and casual about what he did. Key
phrase, *after Angel loses his soul*. Spike and Dru have known about the
curse since School Hard, and so what I think, is that Drusilla wanted to
make Angel feel bad not only in a physical way(the holy water), but also
mentally, by reminding him of the crimes he committed when he was not in
control of his body. Now that Angel can't feel bad, she doesn't bother
trying.

I think this is along the lines of when an evil curse is broken
everyone and everything is back to normal. Which is why Buffy's
dark hair was no longer attached, Xander lost some supposed tattoos,
and those monster kids' scaly skin cleared up.

I believe that he got in because he was not a real vampire, but someone who
was transformed by the spell, so that the normal rules for vampires did not
apply to him. If you think back to the Nightmares episode when Buffy became
a vampire, she was able to be out in sunlight because she was not a real
vampire, merely one transformed by the nightmares.
Therefore, he was able to get into Buffy's house without being invited,
since he was really still a human, but Angel had to receive the original
invitation from Buffy before he could enter.

Yes, this outwardly seems to be a pure contradiction. The demon was
responsible for the family massacre, not the soul. So why should she
punish soulful Angel, and reward demonic Angel? One would think it
would be the other way around.
I see that others are already jumping in with the explanations such
that Dru's demon hates Angel's soul, didn't care that much about her
old family anyway, and just used the massacre as an excuse to
torture Angel's goodness. But even demonic Dru is obsessed with
what happened to her family (it comes up over and over in her doll
talk).
My take is that she tortured "good" Angel because she could. He
was at her mercy. She doesn't torture demonic Angel because he is
too strong and too frightening. He made her what she is today.
Notice that she didn't attack "good" Angel when he was at full
strength in the park earlier (after he saved the boy from her).
She was somewhat seductive with him then.
It might all come down to relative power,

just say it now. Nice catch, Ted!

Oh, don't do this... and me with a mouth full of coffee!
Kinda like the ill-fated Jon Cryer vehicle, "Partners"?

ObBuffy: The new picture on the official Buffy page is a hopeful one to me.
Angel seems to be looking out at me, as is Buffy, and is not looking at her
neck. Let's keep up hope.

Subject: BUFFY: My Buffy Marathon
Being an Australian fan discontent with the pathetic screening of Buffy
here, I purchased episodes from the US and today spent all day watching
from Nightmares through to Innocence and was totally blown away. Having
all but given up avoiding spoilers I'd already read transcripts of every
episode but thoroughly enjoyed every second anyhow.
I especially loved the two-parter everyone has been raving about -
incredibly powerful acting by all the cast but especially Sarah and
David. Any person who doubts Sarah's talent (and there have been a few
on the Mr & Ms Showbiz posting board) obviously hasn't watched much of
the show and certainly not those two episodes.
Also, does anyone have either....
1. a transcript of the David Boreanaz interview on Entertainment Asylum
2. a transcript of the ASH interview also on EA.

Huh! I would have never guessed one of my favorite songs from the 'big
hair decade' was his brother. How did you find this out?

Shannon,
I'm very sorry about your friend.
The V-day ep is called "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered."
The thing of it is, if Buffy *does* get her license, she'll probably
wreck the car in some urgent episode of slayage, still fulfilling her
higher responsibility to protect Sunnyhell, and she'll be in *so* much
trouble at home!
