This is a *brilliant* insight! I wonder why it's not been raised
before, except that perhaps we've assumed that the vampires couldn't
actually succeed in their nefarious plans.
I have another thought, too, though. Do you know the story of the frog
and the scorpion? The scorpion asks the frog to carry him across the
river, but the frog initially declines on the grounds that the scorpion
will sting and kill him. But then the scorpion argues persuasively,
"but consider, if I sting you, then we'll both drown. I'll die too."
The frog then agrees to carry the scorpion, but halfway across the
river, he feels a terrible pain, and realizes that he's been betrayed
and stung. "*Why* would you do that," he asks the scorpion, "now, we're
*both* going to die." And the scorpion says, "I know, I know. But I
can't help myself. I'm a *scorpion*."
The vampires may be more devoted to evil and the destruction of humans
than they are to survival. In that respect, they resemble both
parasites that kill the host, and not a few humans consumed by hatred ,
including Jenny's family -- more devoted to vengeance than they are to
life.

<<Oz' reaction to this event is to simply ask if the others
have observed the victim turn to dust. Really, about the minimal reaction
that one could expect from an innocent stranger at some most unusual
proceedings! Hmmm.
Enough though to draw a quick admission from Xander that vampires are real and
Sunnydale is full of them. "That explains a lot", Oz replies. (Explains a
lot of WHAT? Has perceptive, insightful Oz seen a lot of evidence of vampiric
activity, but not figured it out until Xander spoke?>>
Well, what is the perfect comment to make here? Everyone else seems cool, and
Oz, the King of Coolness, needs to say something. I think it's out of
character for him to start freaking out. Plus, who in Sunnydale hasn't seen a
lot of strange things going on?
<<The interesting thing is that he must have ageed with hardly any discussion.
Most insightful and caring guys would have argued with Willow about being
asked to participate in a felony! Not only for his own sake, but also out of
concern for her welfare. But no, he goes along on this illegal adventure with
hardly a concern. He does ask a leading question about how many of these
thefts they may have performed in the past. Hmmm. A little late to be asking
about the character of the gang he has already joined.>>
Now, call me jumping the gun here a little, but I'm going to operate under the
assumption that Oz is a werewolf. (I may be prooved to be wrong, in which
case, I'm extremely sorry for all this ranting) If he is a werewolf, you
see...
The Oz Man would already know about vampires.
Therefore, extreme lack of surprise is warranted. If I were him, I'd be more
surprised at the fact that Willow knows about it than anything else. And hey,
if he already knows without a doubt that demons and such exist, he would help
them steal the Army weapons. Besides, how could he say no to Willow?
<<But insightful Oz says he knows where HE would go instead. It turned out to
be
a really good guess, from a person who had only the vaguest knowledge of
demonic activity in Sunnydale only a few hours before.>>
Hey, he's in a band, he wears black nail polish, and possibly he's an occult
creature himself... I'd say he probably knows a little about things going on.
<<I have to conclude, that Oz is either a mole, spying for the vampires, or,
like Jenny/Jana, is another watcher. If the latter, who is he watching, and
why? What do you folks think?>>
Oz ain't spying for the vampires. He's way too cool. Though he may be a
'planted' character with ulterior motives.
If we are all still following the 'Oz is a werewolf' theory, then ask yourself
this, my friends: Does Oz have a pack? Maybe he's scouting out Sunnydale for
them. But since he's joined the Scooby gang, there's all this divided
loyalties stuff to deal with.
But hey, guys, this is just an idea, not a spoiler or anything.

No I'm sure he didn't know. You can look at Angel's statements and know he
didn't
want to be a vamp again. Also remember it wasn't the act of having sex that
changed him, it was the peace and happiness it brought him. I don't think
happiness or peace would have happened if he was just out to have the curse

The army is physically capable of destroying vampires, with rocket
launchers or whatever. But to actually apply that would have major
problems.
First of all, Buffy and Giles would have to convince the U.S.
government that not only do vampires exist, but that the problem
is serious enough to warrant sending American troops into an
American city.
And once the army is in Sunnydale, what does it do? They can
blow up Spike's factory/warehouse base, but beyond that? The
vampires aren't a body of men like an enemy army, and they have
no real infrastructure to destroy. It's like fighting terrorists, or
guerillas; conventional military forces have problems doing that.
And these are guerillas who are stronger and faster than ordinary
humans, who have enhanced senses, and who can turn an enemy
soldier into one of their own.
Does the army put the whole town of Sunnydale under martial law,
and try to root out every individual vampire? How many innocent
people would be killed in the process? And even if this process
seems to be working, the vampires could move to another town
100 miles away in a single night. How long would it take to
redeploy the army there, and what stops the vampires from just
moving again? So vampires aren't really the type of problem that
conventional military forces like the Army are set up to deal with.

So, if he's good again, Angel would be worried and concerned about
a 'relationship' with Buffy causing him to become evil again. And if
he's worried and concerned during it, then it won't be a moment of
pure happiness, will it? So he's safe, but has a lousy love life.

I can't reproduce all your other reasons, because of the 4-line quoting
limit, but I have to say, your arguments are incredibly good and
convincing. It *would* be hard to fight arbitrarily mobile bands of the
undead, unless perhaps you could surprise them preemptively by
airlifting the residents out during the day and nuking Sunnydale. I
suspect many Californians would notice the mushroom cloud, though, and
might find it incongenial...

I totally love this idea. As much as I hope they don't have a quick fix for
Angel, I have a bad feeling that Angelus might not last for too long. But oh,
how I hope they keep him bad at least till the end of the season, if not
through the next- there are a lot of stories in this new situation & I'd hate
to see them only start to touch upon Angelus without getting too deep into it.
so i'm thinking of this song by a band called Cowboy Junkies, called Misguided
Angel & the verse that struck me was this:
"misguided angel hanging over me/ heart like Gabriel, pure & white as ivory/
soul like Lucifer, black & cold as a piece of lead/ misguided angel love you
till i'm dead".... It just reminded me of our Angel.
then i was listening to the musical Jekyll & Hyde (yeah i know i have a pretty
bizarre range of tastes. my brother thinks i'm nuts for listening to mariah
carey and then nine inch nails back to back, but hey variety's the spice of
life) ... which made me start thinking that rather than solve the Angelus
problem completely, they could do something so that while Angel's back to his
old self most of the time, every once in a while Angelus finds his way up to
the forefront. (and maybe linda eder could guest star!!! okay that's too
much)

"When Innocence Is Lost"
Buffy Summers awoke to find herself hovering above the air. She
squeezed her eyes shut again and weekly moaned.
"Angelus why are you helping the Slayer?" An unfamiliar voice
whined.
"Shut up." Someone hissed.
Suddenly, it all came flashing back to her in a wave of horrible
memories. Angel whispering softly in her ear. His sweet kisses and their
bodies melting as one. Then the emptiness in her soul and the pain in her
heart. She saw the evil within his deep, mysterious eyes. Terrified of what
he might do to her, she jumped up and tumbled to the hard ground. Buffy
looked up fearfully. She heard a high giggle.
"Angel you sure know how to treat a lady!" A girl stepped forward
and slipped her arm around Angel's waist. "You nearly killed her."
"Yeah." He mumbled back, staring down at Buffy in concern. Then
his head snapped up and he smiled nastily. "To bad I didn't plain out kill
her."
Buffy blinked back tears, visibly upset. Julia laughed and growled at
Buffy. Buffy, sensing the danger, jumped to her feet. Julia laughed again.
"Oh she is a funny one Angelus." Julia commented wryly.
"She sure gives me a lot of trouble." Angel's eyes raked Buffy's
willowy body. "Maybe I should get rid of her now. What do you think
sweetie?"
Julia pondered for a moment and then answered, "I think we should
kill her."
"I don't think tonight's the night." Angel laughed. He pulled Buffy to
him and pressed her lips against his, crushing her to his chest. He pushed
her away and threw her to the ground nearby.
"Let's go Julia." He commanded. "Now!" They ran off into the
night.
Buffy stood up on shaking knees and raised a finger to her swollen
lips. When she pulled her hand away, she saw her blood. Her lip ached as
painful as her heart.
***
"Giles it was so horrifying!" Willow Rosenburg cried, visibly shaken.
"He was so evil!"
"It's okay Willow really." Giles comforted her. "Your safe now."
"But Buffy!" Willow protested.
"I'm right here Willow." Buffy said from the doorway.
"Buffy!" Willow ran to hug her best friend. "Did he hurt you?!"
"No Wil, I'm fine." Buffy sat down in the chair next to Giles.
"Your bleeding Buffy." Giles said, concerned.
"Oh it's nothing." She replied. "I'm going to the ladies room
to-uh-freshen up." She walked through the swinging double doors with
Willow on her heels.
"Buffy what really happened?" Willow asked quietly.
"I don't really know." Buffy sighed. "I remember fighting him and
then I woke up in his arms outside of the school."
"Maybe there is some good in him after all." Willow said trying to
cheer her up.
"I doubt it." Buffy replied. "He said he was going to make me suffer
before he killed me. Then he kissed me. But it wasn't a real kiss. It was
more like a bite."
"Is that why your lips are bleeding?" Willow asked.
Buffy nodded and walked down the dark halls of Sunnydale High
silently.
***
"Angel did you kill her?" Dru asked excitedly when Angel
reappeared in their small humble lair. "Is she dead Angel? Is she?"
"Not yet." Angel replied, touching her cheek softly. "Not until I make
her suffer."
"Like you did to me?!" Dru giggled.
"Like I did to you." Angel echoed.
"What a touching scene Angel but why don't you tell us who that girl
is that nearly killed the Slayer?" Spike said, once again donned to his
wheelchair.
"That's Julia." Angel smiled eerily. "She raised me when I was a vamp
child. But she didn't make me."
"Thank you Julia." Spike muttered sarcastically under his breath.
"Where did she go Angel?" Drusill asked innocently.
"She was just passing through." Ange replied. "She had to be on her
way."
"Oh." Drusilla nodded her head slowly. "She had to go like mum and dad
right Angel?"
"Yes sweetheart. Are ya crippled again Spiky?" Angel taunted.
"No I'm tired but I don't think I'm needed here." Spike answered,
standing and heading to the door. Angel cut him off.
"Tell me Spike." Angel narrowed his eyes. "What were you doing in
the cemetery late at night conversing with the Slayer?"
"I told you Angelus, I went to look for food." Spike replied. "Now if
you'll get out of my way." He pushed Angel to the side and disappeared
into the night.
"We have to watch that one." Angel whispered to himself.
***
Buffy and Willow sat back down in the musty library. Giles came out
of his office and joined them.
"Now Buffy tell me everything that happened." He said.
"I was out hunting in the cemetery and Willow and I were talking.
Ummm, Angel and Drusilla came out and we ran." Buffy explained softly.
"Willow climbed over the wall and Angel got to me before I could get over."
"Buffy...!" Willow protest and was quieted with a small, hard kick
from Buffy.
Giles looked at them strangely and nodded his head for her to go on.
"We fought and this other vampire came up and bit me. When I
woke up I was outside of Sunnydale High in Angel's arms." She leaned
back in her seat and a wistful sigh escaped from her lips.
Just then, Jenny Calendar came rushing through the doors.
"Rupert!" She called.
"What does she want?!" Buffy cried, jumping up, outraged.
"I think I found a way to get Angel's soul back." Jenny declared,
holding up a spellbook.
Buffy's eyes widened and she collapsed back into the chair.
***
Spike pushed open the doors to Sunnydale High and headed for the
library. He knew the route all to well, remembering the night when he and
his buddies had crashed a little party to kill the Slayer. He remembered
the bitter taste of failure. Spike could hear excited voices through the
doors leading to the library and he swung them open and stepped in. The
Slayer, her friend, her Watcher, and some unfamiliar lady huddled around
a table.
"Sorry to interrupt the party guys but I've got news for you." Spike
boomed, causing the humans to look at him in fear.
"What do you want Spike." Buffy asked, stepping towards him.
"I came to finish the business that we started earlier." He answered.
"Our Angel business. Remember?"
"I don't need your help Spike." Buffy declared. "We have a way to
restore Angel's soul."
"Ahhh but I have a way to restore Angel to his human form once
again." Spike replied, his black eyes glittering. "Forever."
"What?!" Buffy gasped. Here eyes grew wide and she clasped a
hand to her neck.
"Oh my...." Giles muttered. Jenny grabbed onto him for support.
Willow stood openmouthed with shock.
"Hey I thought I'd find you all here!" Xander cried walking throught
the swinging doors with Cordelia behind him. He shrieked when he saw
Spike and the surprised faces of his friends.
"Who died?" Cordelia asked. "Who's he?!" Cordelia pointed at
Spike.
"No way." Buffy said falling back into a chair.
"Yes way my dear Slayer." Spike said. "Angel can become human
again."
"Whoa." Xander mumbled.
"This is definitely an excuse to have a party!" Cordelia cried.
***
"Angel!" Drusilla screamed.
"What is it Dru honey?" Angel rushed to her side. "I'm right here."
"There going to take you away from me." She whined. "Away."
"Who is going to take me away from you Dru?" Angel hugged her
tightly. "Who?"
"The Slayer." Dru answered. "She has to die."
"She will." Angel replied. "She will die tomorrow night, and so will
her friends." He gently released Dru from his grip to see the tears
streaming down her face.
"I can't lose you again Angel." She whimpered.
"You won't my darling." Angel stroked her cheek. "You won't." He
stood up and called out, "Merthos come at once." He smiled back at Dru.
"Yes sir." Merthos said crisply. "You called me."
"I want you to find all the vamps in Sunnydale and bring them to
me." Angel said, his eyes gleaming eerily. "Tomorrow night the Slayer will
die."
***
"How?" Buffy asked Spike mechanically.
"You must find the one who made Angel and make him drink her
blood. Then she must be killed." Spike replied.
"But how?" Buffy exclaimed. "I don't get it!" She paced across the
room.
"It's impossible." Giles muttered.
"No it's possible." Spiked protested.
Suddenly, Buffy's eyes lit up and she grew and angry look on her
face. "You bastard Spike," She whispered vehemently. "Darla made
Angel and Darla is dead."
Spike looked shocked for a moment and then he regained his
composure. "Well I didn't think you would catch me so quick! I guess it's
time for me to kill you now. See Buffy, it was all part of a plan. You get
Angel so you and him are together, then I kill you both in one shot!" Spike
laughed evilly. "Okay boys come on in!" A band of vampires paraded in
the swinging library doors.
"See you around Slayer." Spike threatened. He growled and lunged
at her. Buffy backflipped.
"Get out of here!" She screamed to Giles. "Throw me the
crossbow."
Giles reached over and tossed the bow to Buffy who had landed at
the top of the stairs leading to the second story loft in the library. She
expertly caught it and saw it was preloaded with bolts.
Giles, Xander, Cordelia, Willow, and Jenny all ran towards the doors
leading to the hall but the vampires cut them off. Giles held up a cross and
the vamps hissed and backed off a few steps. Jenny threw holy water at
them making them howl in fear and pain.
Meanwhile, Buffy had ran behind the stacks of books. She pushed
aside a few books and looked through the space. Her friends were
huddled together, surrounded by ten vamps. Spike was heading up the
stairs in search of her. Buffy figured she better make use of her time and
took aim at one of the vamps prowling in the back of the crowd. She shot
and caught him expertly, through the heart. He uttered a small cry of pain
before he was reduced to ash and the other vamps turned to look.
"Uh oh." Buffy mumbled to herself. She jumped up and flipped over
the railing landing on a table on the first floor. The vamps growled.
"Go to hell." She snorted at them and took aim, taking out three
more vamps. The rest, now weary of her snarled.
"Buffy look out!" Willow screamed as Spike came up and grabbed
Buffy by the neck. He pulled her head back, exposing her to him.
"You will never win Slayer." He whispered in her ear. He took the
crossbow and threw it to a vamp down below. Spike prepared to rip out
the Slayer's pale throat.
"Buffy no!" Willow screamed.
***
While all the ruckus was happening, Jenny managed to sneak out
and lock herself in the custodian's closet. She turned the pages in her the
ancient spellbook of her clan. Jenny began to hum the ancient curse, once
again, that was put on Angel a long time before. She felt Angel's hurt and
suffering. With all the strength she could muster, Jenny stood on shaking
knees and screamed the words, feeling Angel's change deep within her soul.
Then, she collapsed, knowing her spell had, again, worked, and Angel's
sould was restored.
***
Angel pitched forward and clutched at his stomach. "Dru..." He
gasped. He hadn't felt this much pain since, well since, a couple days ago.
"Angelus darling," Dru whimpered. "What is it?"
Angel stood up and tumbled outside into the thunder and pouring rain.
"Buffy!" He screamed into the wind.
***
Drusilla gasped and followed her Angel outside, watching as he fell
to his knees and sobbed, screaming the Slayer's name.
"No..." She whispered to herself. "NO!" She screamed and
collapsed in a puddle. Darkness engulfed her.
***
Spike prepared to bite into Buffy, when the shrill screaming of a
woman nearby interupted them.
"Jenny?!" Someone called out. "Jenny!"
Taking the opportunity, Buffy smashed Spike with her elbow and
flipped him onto his back. The wind suddenly picked up and rain pounded
against the windows of the musty library. Spike was knocked unconscious
and the six remaining vamps looked around nervously. Buffy jumped off
the table and executed a perfect round-house kick and four vamps
dropped to the ground. The other two lunged at her and she
straddle-kicked them, knocking them also, to the ground.
"Giles!" Buffy yelled over the howling wind. "What's going on?!"
"I don't know but Jenny has disappeared." He shouted back.
"Throw me the stakes and I'll get rid of Spike and the rest of these
vamps." She added. "Hurry!"
Giles tossed her Slayer bag to her. "I will get Willow, Cordelia and
Xander out of here and we'll find Jenny." Buffy nodded. She watched as
they left the room.
"Sorry Buffy but you won't be killing me tonight." Spike sounded
from across the room. Buffy spun around to see him climbing out a
window. "Hopefully you'll find Angel before I do cause when I do, he dies."
Then Spike disappeared. Buffy turned and began to stake the remaining
vampires until the floor was covered entirely with ash.
***
Giles, Willow, Cordelia, and Xander had run into the hallway when
they saw that the custodians closet door was slightly ajar.
"This room brings back memories." Xander muttered.
"Yeah bad ones." Cordelia shot back.
Giles pushed open the door to display Jenny Calendar lying on the
floor with a spellbook by her side. "Jenny." He whispered, gently prodding
her.
"Hmmmm?" She murmured. "Rupert?" Her eyes opened.
"What happened?" He wrapped his arms around her.
"I cast the spell on Angel again." She said softly. "His soul is back.
He's the good Angel again. The Angel we all know and love."
Willow, Cordelia and Xander stepped aside to show Buffy standing there,
tears brimming her lids. "Thank you." She whispered then fled outside
into the night.
***
Angel lay, soaked to the bone, sobbing. His heart was aching. He
knew what had happened.
"Buffy." He called out again. He had heard Dru screeching behind
him but now she was quiet. She knew what had happened as well.
"Angel?" Came a soft, familiar, loved voice.
"Buffy?" Angel's sobbing stopped and her tried to lift his head.
"Angel." She whispered hoarsely and fell down beside him, cradling
his head in her lap.
