Kendra is apparently from a culture where people are fully aware of the vampires and the slayer/watcher thing. They'd be likely to be willing to respond to a person knocking on the door and saying "Hey, your daughter is a potential slayer. Send her away to slayer boarding school." Can you see Giles convincing Joyce that her 2 year old Buffy is a potential slayer of vampires and should be taken away to be trained? Can you say "wicked axe of fury"? I knew you could.
My take is that there are a loose collection of watchers around the globe. Under normal circumstances each would find a potential slayer and train her. Buffy is not a normal case. When the existing slayer dies one of the slayer's in waiting is supernaturally chosen and given the ability. I'm guessing that the slayers in waiting are only good for a certain length of time. In other words if Buffy lives to a ripe old age there would be potential slayers that would never make it to the big leagues. Buffy was probably chosen more for her proximity to the HM than anything else.

I have to say that I did not like this episode. I found it scattered and disorganized. The fight scene in the church looked particualrily bad. The bug man was not nearly as dangerous as they made him appear and Kendra and Buffy becoming friends like that seemed predictable and forced.
Just my two cents

As I recall (from the movie), there was a birthmark that defined slayers. Buffy (again, in the movie) had hers removed. Now, does this cross over from movie to show, or not? That would explain how Kendra's parents recognized her destiny, at least, assuming that they knew what it meant.
However, this brings up a contradiction: Kendra keeps insisting on secrecy, right? However, if the slayer has this brithmark, then anyone who sees it (who understands what it means) will know that this girl is the (or a potential) slayer. So, kendra's parents know, if she's from a really small town, then the whole town knows....not very secret, no?
The secret is actually easier to keep in the jaded American society that doesn't believe in vampires to begin with. This also explains why Buffy has problems combining her "normal" life with a slayer's duties: Possibly, other slayers have not had to put up the pretense of a "normal" life, since their existance is generally (though not specifically) known.
Oh yeah....it seems that a long lasting question has finally been resolved once and for all, right from the horse's (no offense :) ) mouth... There are many slayer-possibles alive at any given time, but only one is "activated". Now the question arises, How does the activation process take place? How/why is one girl chosen over another?
Anyway, thoughts for the gristmill...

My theory (I usually have one <g>) is that he, being undead, has no

Agreed. I think this notion of teamwork was nicely demonstrated by the partner switch at the end of WML 2. From a tactical standpoint it makes sense: Buffy's fought Spike before and probably is better able to take his measure than Kendra (who was looking like she was taking her lumps).
Perhaps Buffy would have felt bad if Spike had killed Kendra?
Couple of more things occurred to me:
1) Kind of heartwarming at the beginning when Kendra tells Buffy that if she dies then it won't matter because another will come to continue her work. Nice sense of continuity. Also kind of chilling because it sounds just like what the Order of Taraka does. Maybe Spike and Dru should be very worried?
2) In a way, it makes sense that one Watcher doesn't know what the others are doing: I'd imagine they'd want to keep these girls as protected as possible until they're needed and all it would take would be one loose-tongued Watcher who knew too much to jeopardize all of them (similar thing happened on Highlander, doncha know.)
3) It makes me think that all these girls who are being trained to be major hosses should get together and form a Vampire Slaying Drill Team.
Think of the possibilities. They could attack en masse, and if the Head Slayer gets killed then another is chosen immediately and she's already there in the thick of things. Pretty efficient, eh?

I have to agree that overall, part two wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I think the biggest grip I had was there were so many things going on at once that it felt as if the pacing were off. Looking back, I wish they'd saved some of the Xander/Cordelia stuff for a later episode when it could have gotten more attention. I also didn't like the way they kissed. It just didn't seem right for some reason. I think it was the fact that it reminded me a bit of the way Fleishman and O'Connell got together on Northern Exposure, with an angry argument, followed by a passionate kiss. I just didn't buy it here.
The other problem I had was that I wished that Kendra had been introduced about halfway through last week so we had more time to get to her know her as a character rather than just being thisi "opposite of Buffy" character. It might have been fun to see her bonding with Giles a bit more, etc. I think she would have been less annoying this way.
What I did like was the fact that Spike and Dru aren't dead. And who doesn't think that Dru is gonna have quite a bone to pick with Angel now? My question is--was she restored? And if so, did she complete the ritual by draining Spike? If so, that will be interesting. Or are they both strong again?
Guess we'll have to wait and see!

I have to say that I absolutely LOVED this episode. I'm fairly new to this list, also, but y'all have some very interesting conversations, and I think I'm going to like it here <G> I'm one of the supporters of an eventual relationship between Willow and Xander, but Cordy and Oz have both really grown on me and they're fine for now. Cordy and Xander especially have a very interesting relationship, and it should be fun to watch that grow into something more or see where it ends up anyway. Oh, and I loved Oz's whole explanation of the animal crackers and the monkey's pants to Willow, that was hilarious. I was slightly disappointed though, when there was nothing more than carrying Angel out of the church at the end of the ep after all the talk of messing with Buffy's boyfriend. Dru and Spike were great as usual, glad that the PTB didn't kill 'em off. On the topic of Kendra, though, I really agree with Buffy here. I'm near her age, and jealousy is SUCH an issue right now. I mean, I get upset when my friends score higher on Algebra tests. If I thought I was the only one to do something in the world, and all of the sudden someone else showed up who could do the same thing, maybe even better than I could, you'd bet that I'd be jealous. Buffy was actually really mature to work with Kendra, I don't know if I could in her situation. Then again, it just might be me. Either way, it was a great ep, and I can't wait 'till reruns are over.

I don't think she will purchase a large amount of agricultural real estate any time soon. Buffy has taught her to improvise at times. But the point is well-taken.

i'm respond to a comment made, by i don't remember who, that said she heard from a friend that angel might possibly become human. angel is 200 and somethings years old.
if he is turned back into a human he while hurl over and die.
it would never work. i think the whole "vampire in love with a slayer" and vice versa thing is what keeps their relationship interesting.
After viewing these episodes I have several questions and comments:
*) Which one is the slayer? Because Buffy "died" Kendra was called forth as the slayer. But Buffy isn't dead, so she's still the slayer, and apparently Kendra retains her power, so who's the slayer? Are they both the slayer? Doesn't that contradict the traditional "only one per generation" theory?
*) I'm glad they gave us a semi-rational explanation on why Kendra was able to hold her own against Buffy. At the end of part 1 I was wondering how this new slayer could fight well enough to take Buffy on as an equal.
And now we know that Kendra has been in training for most of her life and even Buffy said that her technique was very good.
*) Kendra knew from childhood that she would eventually be called as the next slayer. I'm going to put away my disbelief that this is possible and why couldn't they figure out that Buffy was the slayer *before* she was called. Even though Kendra has been in training for most of her life, it has just been training. Buffy has on-the-job experience and that makes her more qualified than Kendra any day of the week. Sure, eventually Kendra would become Buffy's equal and maybe even better because of her discipline, but she still needs to learn how to improvise, how to use her imagination and how to think for herself.
*) As far as the slayer handbook goes, didn't Buffy have a watcher before Giles? Why didn't he give her the handbook or even a mention that one existed? So, following that thought, we have two separate watchers who both decided individually that Buffy was just too unorthodox to do things the way they've been done for (hundreds, thousands?) many years?
*) Was I the only one that suspected that at the root of Kendra's disapproval of Buffy was a jealousy that Buffy got to ocassionally have a life and was still doing the slayer bit rather well when Kendra had to give everything up? It was hilarious when the crossbow went off and Kendra was trying soooo hard to look like miss perfect and just ruined it.
*) Were Buffy's claws showing here or what? For someone who didn't want the gig in the first place, she sure was territorial. She wanted Kendra gone and forgotten as soon as possible. And even when she speculated on giving it up and letting Kendra take over, it wasn't a permanent situation she had in mind, more like a vacation.
*) How many of you think that Kendra, with her all-or-nothing mentality and her do-things-by-the-book attitude would have been offed by the Master very quickly? At least that's my thought.
*) Is it me or did Dru look especially alluring in this episode? I had never noticed how truly beautiful she was until WML2. The way she looked when she was torturing Angel was truly dark and I could see how he could become obsessed with her.
*) Go Willow! Her smile when she was trying to thank Oz was so sweet and I was glad that he mentioned it. It's about time this girl got her due.
And wasn't she awesome during the fight scene when she was helping Giles take out that vampire? Talk about a change, the Willow at the beginning of the first season was afraid of her own shadow and now she's offing demons and other things that go bump in the night.
*) Now we now why Spike was so surprised that Buffy had friends and family. Until Kendra showed up I really didn't understand how isolated the slayers usually were. That's probably why Buffy has been so effective and so hard to kill. And it's also one of the things that makes the show so good.
*) The Xander/Cordelia kiss -- it was about time! It was getting pretty boring watching those two spar and nothing happening. Everyone knew that it was bound to happen, and the fact that we got two kisses was just too much. I wonder if they're going to 'fess up to the others?
*) The Buffy/Angel relationship seems to have developed nicely. The amount of affection those two show each other is leaps forward from where they were in "When she was bad" (to be seen next week).
*) I hope they bring back Kendra for another appearance. She and Buffy seemed to have bonded enough that they might actually get along next time.
And I can't wait to see what Dru's coming out party is going to be about.

A lot of nits have been picked about this episode, but the most obvious one (to me at least, or my roommate, rather) hasn't come up - how is it that Drusilla was able to sprinkle the hold water on Angel with her bare hands? If it burns him, it should burn her.
As for the ritual, Angel was awfully weak at the end. It was probably stopped just in time, and Drusilla had gotten enough of his blood to be better.
I guess I'm in the minority here but I don't like the Xander & Cordelia thing. It's funny, but it just strikes a wrong note with me. As I said before, I like their relationship as it is (Was?) - bitter and argumentatively sociable. Yeah.
If it's going to be a rerun, why couldn't it be the original premiere?
Truly, this episode was, IMO, one of the best so far. It was so good, in fact, that it has lured me out of my cupboard, to actually post something!

I disagree. I laughed myself into stitches during Xander's and Cordy's clinch in the basement - it was too hilarious for words. The cheesy orchestral music, as someone so aptly put it, was the perfect touch.
True, sexual tension is good, although I personally prefer the scenes with Buffy and Angel <G>
Someone had mentioned this: How come Dru was wearing black at the end of the episode? I thought dramatic license, although if you wanted to be practical, you could say soot.

From: TknoPagan@aol.com
Kendra-It was .... what is right and not knowing what some of the most valuable things in life are because she has to be a Slayer and takes her training to the extreme.
The underlying premise of the show is, I think, duty. And perhaps that is the most important and valuable thing of all. Life isn't fair, and nobody ever said it was. While I perfectly understand Buffy's constant rants about wanting a normal life and perhaps even sympathise, Kendra's attitude certainly strikes a chord in me. Maybe this is the difference in cultures? Buffy's and Kendra's culture? Buffy is a fairly(?) typical American teenager, while Kendra is an African or Jamaican/Carribean teenager. Surely that has some impact on her attitude to life and her destiny? I think Kendra accepts the existence of bad things and evil monsters more easily than did Buffy before she accepted her destiny. And she has accepted her destiny, despite her ranting and raving about wanting a "normal" life. That's the most ironic thing of all. So here's to Buffy!
What are the most valuable things in life? Everyone has a different list. Kendra's ascetic lifestyle and dedication to her duty, is admirable. I guess the point I'm trying to make is, there are people out there who take their duty seriously, whatever it may be, and think nothing of self sacrifice. And so, here's to Kendra!
And now I'll go back to wherever lurkers lurk.

There's some debate about SMG's character name in Scream 2. In one of the magazines I got (the same one that I had mention before on the list) had an interview with SMG and it mention her character from IKWYDLS and Scream 2. This is not the complete article. Here is only one paragraph from the article (since the article is VERY LONG.)
Drama-Logue
Oct.23-29, 1997 issue
"I Know What You Did Last Summer: The New Kids on the Blotter" Written by Tom Provenzano
Of course following her opening in Last Summer, Gellar will be seen starring in the eagerly awaited Scream 2. She grimaces as she's asked about her character in that film. "We're not allowed to say verly much, but she's different for me. Buffy is really spunky and offbeat, in Last Summer Helen is this vain thing who doesn't know much beyond her looks.
Then C.C., the character in Scream 2, is really a spitfire. She has a bit of an edge." But we'll have to wait for that film for more information on the character.
[End of article]
So, there we go. Right from SMG's own words. If the article is correct (and I'm pretty sure that it is), then I guess that her character in Scream 2 in C.C. (or is it Cici??) Guess we'll find out the truth in a few weeks.

The dress didn't "mysteriously" change from white to black... she had the black dress on when the ritual started. She is wearing white while torturing Angel... so she obviously changed clothes before the ritual started. Spike calls her his ..what "dark evil" ..something like that.

You know, I was thinking about something today. Either I'm reading too much into things (no!), or there have ALWAYS been little hints that Xander and Cordy might have a little sparkin'.
Obviously, every guy who's ever been to fourth grade knows that when another guy picks on another girl, he's secretly interested in her. And Xander has spent a LOT of time over the past year picking on Cordy. We all know this.
But, you know, Cordy's had a few Xander-moments, as well. Right now I'm thinking specifically of the very beginning of "Angel" (way, way back there) when Xander was dancing at the Bronze. He bumped in Cordelia.
CORDELIA Ouch! Would you please get your extreme
oafishness off my two hundred dollar shoes!
XANDER Sorry, I was just, uh...
CORDELIA Trying to get off the dance floor before
Annie Vega's boyfriend squashes you like a
bug?
XANDER Oh, so you noticed.
CORDELIA Mmm-hmm.
XANDER Well, thanks for being so understanding.
CORDELIA Sure.
XANDER By the way, I don't know what everybody's
talking about. That dress doesn't make you
look like a hooker.
Is it just me, or does it seem like Cordelia was just a little TOO aware of Xander? She's dancing with her escort-du-jour, and he bumped into her FROM BEHIND, and she still knew exactly where he was and what he was doing the whole time.
RIVA Technologies, Inc. we were pretty much doomed."
