Subject: BUFFY: ADMIN: List rules
If you haven't done so in a while, please review the list rules. We're
seeing a lot of little violations lately. Thanks.
Welcome! This list is for discussion of "Buffy The
Vampire Slayer," both the TV series and the movie.
The address to post messages to the list is
BUFFY@XMISSION.COM.
The buffy FAQ can be found at
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html.
Please check it out ASAP--Cagey has done a wonderful job with it and it
will answer a bunch of your questions about the show and fandom.
PLEASE READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list-- many
common questions are covered there.
Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy,"
we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved
in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully,
they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone.
Please note: we <do> enforce these rules. This is an extremely high-
volume list, and we want to make sure that the volume is relevant
to the show.
1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series,
Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc..
Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're
being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe.
2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in
consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." Also, no
masking (replacing one letter of a potentially offensive word with
an asterisk).
3. No advertising of <any> non-Buffy related items or services.
If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise,
conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no
attachments, or binary files of any sort (including images, wavs,
MOVs, etc).
4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There is a separate Buffy
fiction list (subscription info below).
5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an
episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post
about it, please do the following:
**Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header.
**Leave about twelve lines (blank or with non-spoiler info) at
the top of the post.
This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode
ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people
whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without
giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header.
Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's
national viewing time, which is currently set at 9 p.m. Mondays,
Eastern Standard Time. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns.
6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST.
We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames
can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a
lot less fun for everyone.
Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory
comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of
the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy."
Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you
start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill
and Sharon.
First offense: offender is uns*bscribed for one week. Second offense:
offender is uns*bscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three
months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist
permanently.
And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy"
aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway.
There are slander laws against it. It's also common courtesy.
Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the
listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any
penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and
their decisions are final.
7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any
discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or
which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of
us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the
discussion thread, against our express <posted> wishes, will be
immediately uns*bscribed for one week.
8. Please limit quotes of a previous post to four lines maximum per
point you are responding to. Buffy is a high traffic list, and we're
asking s*bscribers to be mindful of wasted bandwidth when they respond
to posts.
For example, here's an original quote:
>I just love Buuffy the Vampire Slayer. It's my favorite show, and about
the only thing I watch on television anymore. I look forward to each
and every episode. DOes anyone know hot to write to the stars of the
show, or where to write to show our support? Willow is my favorite
character, but I like Buffy a lot to. And Giles! Woo hoo! I recognize
him from VR5.<
If you want to ansewr this person's questions about where to write,
there's no need to include the extra stuff, so your response should
look like this:
>Does
>anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write
>to show our support?
You can even clean it up further and put it onto two lines, but you
get the picture. Only include the relevant stuff in your response, so
that people get what you're talking about.
Penalties:
First offense: Offlist warning (clearly marked WARNING: Overquoting).
Second offense: Removal from the list for one week.
9. Please limit your .sig to 6 lines maximum, but do include your
name and email address at the bottom of each post so someone can
respond to you privately if they want to. Penalties for not following
this rule are the same as for #8.
10. Do NOT post personal information, or requests for personal
information, about the cast, crew, etc. of "Buffy" to this list. Personal
information includes (but is not limited to) home address, telephone
number, email address (unless the individual gives it out freely), etc.
It's certainly fine to discuss who's dating whom, or how tall someone
is, or things like that. But anything that could constitute an invasion
of personal privacy (or could potentially be some type of threat to any
individual) is strictly forbidden on this list.
The penalty for this is ONE warning-- ONE. If it happens again, that
person is permanently uns*bscribed from this list.
If you have any question over what you're posting, and whether it
violates this rule, please email either one of us.
11. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription
(new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s).
IF YOU'RE S*BSCRIBED TO THE REGULAR BUFFY LIST AND
WISH TO CHANGE TO DIGEST:
You need to uns*bscribe from the Buffy list, and res*bscribe
to the digest.
Send a message to majordomo@xmission.com
In the body of the message, put
uns*bscribe buffy
Then, send a second message to majordomo@xmission.com
In the body of the message, put
s*bscribe buffy-digest
You'll go through the same approval process that you got when
you subbed to the regular Buffy list. If you're s*bscribed to
the digest version, and want to change to regular mail, do the
opposite-- unsub from buffy-digest, and resub to buffy.
THE BUFFY FICTION LIST
To s*bscribe to the Buffy Fiction list, follow the same procedures
as listed above-- just substitute buffyfic or buffyfic-digest for
buffy or buffy-digest.
TO UNS*BSCRIBE FROM ANY BUFFY LIST
send a message to majordomo@xmission.com
In the body of the message put
uns*bscribe buffy
(or buffy-digest, or buffyfic, or buffyfic-digest)
Again, welcome! If you have any questions about these rules, please
contact either one of us offlist. If you have s*bscription problems
or questions, the fastest way to get h*lp is to e-mail one of us at
the addresses below, <not> at the kirby@xmission.com addy which is
the "official" e-mail owner of the list.

Subject: BUFFY: Buffy shirts (and ramblings on my life)
Hey guys,
Sorry I've been lurking (half the list probably doesn't even remember who I
am ;-) but I've been busy with college apps (chanting: please Chapel Hill,
please Chapel Hill)/scholarship apps/biology research paper(anyone
experienced with antibiotic resistance?)/English research paper (know any
good resources on Animal Farm?)/studying for Calculus midterm (dy/dt?)/ and
even working on a Buffy fanfic (always looking for good editors). ;-)
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've sent the xmission list
shirts out (I've already gotten some emails from people saying that they've
gotten theirs (thanks guys!). If you don't have your shirt by this time
next week, or if you have any kind of problem with it, please don't hesitate
to email me. :-)
And . . . for those of you saying "what's all this about shirts?" I'll be
doing a second run of them later in the year (probably after Christmas) so
you'll still have a chance to get one. :-)

From: Jesse Jou <jjou@mail.med.cornell.edu>
Subject: BUFFY: Even in Paris, my thoughts are with Buffy...
Hello, all!
I'm back, paradoxically refreshed and exhausted from my week in Paris to
attend a medical convention with the doctor I work for. Paris was lovely,
but even amidst all that old world splendor, my mind would automatically
form ObBuffys of my experiences.
1) For example, Tuesday afternoon, tired and disgruntled, I was prostrate
on my undersized French bed (the French, being on average smaller than
Americans, have constructed their world 2-3 inches shorter than my 6'
height. Twas like Gulliver among the Lilliputians! :-) ) Flipping
through the 20 cable channels available on my TV, I came across the most
fascinating German situation comedy. The premise: a single mother with
her plucky teenage daughter and the Frankenstein's Monster who lives with
them. In the episode I saw, Frankenstein's Monster helps the women thwart
a burglar. Like any good imperialist, I frowned upon the alien quality of
the natives' behavior until I remembered the horror of the American TV
show, Small Wonder. In any case, as I saw this Frankenstein's Monster, so
warmly accepted by the Deutschlanders, I felt a bitter tinge of regret that
Darryl from SAR could not have benefited from the more open attitudes of
the European continent.
2) Next, I turned to MTV Europe, where I caught the video for the
Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," in which our toothsome
lads, forced to spend the night in a haunted house, homage various classic
horror movies (Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, the Mummy, etc.), whilst
harmonizing tunefully, surrounded by provocative goth chick-a-dees.
Needless to say, I wondered whether Buffy would have done the right thing
and staked all of them or would she have been distracted by all that good
hair? Buffy's faced the Three, but could she defeat the Backstreet Boys?
To every generation is born a boy pop group...
3) Much has been made of the great beauty of the French people, but in
truth, underneath all that silky hair and high gallic cheek bones, the
French have the most uniformly attractive necks of any people. Men, women,
young, and old. I found myself staring at these shapely forms during most
of my time there and wondered if presentation means anything to vampires?
I mean, among we who are life enabled, presentation of a meal is often just
as important as its taste. Following this logic, would Buffyverse vamps
appreciate the artistry of a supple French neck?
4) I returned Friday night and the first thing I did was watch my
recording of IMG. For the first 45 minutes, my rapture was great. This
was the Buffy and the Slayerettes that I remembered from the first season,
tart and incisive, but also sweetly naive. The parallel between Ampata
(has there been any official consensus on the spelling of the name?) and
Buffy was particularly insightful and fresh. The minute they drew it, I
literally exhaled because of its coolness. Unfortunately, the last act
failed to live up to the promise established in the first three. How many
more monsters will we lose to misbegotten love? And yet what other
conclusion could we have had for poor, doomed Ampata? Returning her to her
imprisonment would have been unusually cruel; it's clear that she was aware
the whole time she was trapped in that sarcophagus, unable to move or
speak. Yet letting her roam free would have been just as careless. Ah, me.
5) Willow, Goddess of Geek Love. Much has been made of Oz (Seth Green.
Any relation to Bruce Seth Green? Scott Woodard, do you know?) in this ep,
but Rodney is also worth noting, as the savage beast whom Willow tames with
her gentle ways, as are Chris in SAR and, possibly, Dave in IR, YJ. I'm
reminded of WttH when Cordelia mocks Willow's lack of guy magnetism and of
IR, YJ when Willow bemoans that guys don't come after her. At the time, I
interpreted this to mean that Willow was supposed to be unattractive (which
none of us could understand as most of us would worship her like heathens
if given half a chance), but the developments of this season have suggested
something subtler to me. It's not her attractiveness that's the issue,
it's the kind of guys she attracts. These are not the outgoing boys who
ask any girl they like for a date. These are the shy, awkward, or
marginalized boys; the ones who probably won't really date until they're
juniors in college. If this is the direction TPTB are taking, with Willow
as the girl who doesn't know her own power to enslave quirky guys, then I
think I'm all for it.
6) Xander and his unfortunate monster-girl magnetism. The last one wanted
him to fertilize her eggs then surrender his head to satiate her appetite.
This one tried to eat him, too, but found that she couldn't. The pickin's
are improving! You go, boy! Perhaps a career as a monster-girl escort
could be in his future?
"SWM, 17 going on 26, seeks outgoing, attractive female, species
unimportant, DCF (Drug and Curse Free) for LTR. Please don't want to hurt
me in any way. Serious replies only."

Been lots of talk about Giles past being involved with another slayer.
I think that would be neat. Remember his father was a watcher, so what if
he had a thing for the slayer his father was training. Giles may have been
16 or 17, it was his first true love, she was killed and he retreated into
the "I'm so stuffy" attitude we all know and love.

Subject: BUFFY: RE.: KEEPING NETIQUETTE
Morning Slayerettes. Tonights a new episode. Lots of new things to
claim and Keep, so now's the ideal time to post this little project of
yours truly, THE ARCHANGEL, and the Keeper Pages Listowners. It's a set
of guidelines, hints, rules, netiquette....whatever you like to call
them, on KEEPING. It's full of useful tidbits. Enjoy.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BUFFY FANS, ONE AND ALL!!! THIS IS A POST ON KEEPING. PLEASE READ
THIS IF YOU HAVE EVER HAD A QUESTION ABOUT SAID SUBJECT!!!
Keeping is for fun. It's a way of showing our love for the show and for
our favorite characters. That's it. It's not meant to be a mad charge
to see who can post first onlist about what thing they want and if you
don't get it go crazy. I haven't seen it happen onlist for a VERY long
time....that's a good thing....but it does happen. I just wanted to
remind everyone that KEEPING is done purely for the joy of it.
HINTS ON KEEPING:
1. Don't Do It Onlist (Xmission, PlanetX):
In all honesty no one cares. The Keeper List owners may read your
request but it doesn't matter because it's not "OFFICIAL." There are
quite a few Buffy lists and they all have Keepers of things. The
Official Keeper sites are used by all groups. If your very lucky, maybe
the list owner will take pity on you and contact you back privately and
tell you the proper procedure....but don't count on that. The rules that
have been established are simple and are there for everyone. They're not
written in stone, we're all friends here, so if you have a question ask a
Keeper list owner. It may take a little while but they'll get back to
you OR contact me (my addy's below). I'm a veteran of the "First Season
Keeper Wars" and am more than willing to lend a hand.
2. Check the Keeper Pages First:
This is a big one for all you rookies out there. Buffy fans are
creative, literate, & compulsive. Obvious things get picked off in a
heartbeat....so don't hold your breath on things from first season. The
Keeper List's are updated weekly or as time permits but if you ask them
for something they'll send you back a verification. So even if it's not
on the list at least you'll know your the Keeper. Your best bet is to go
to Lisa's Keeper Index page. It has all the current links to all the
Keeper pages. If you bookmark any page for Keeping, this is the one.
3. Send Requests Directly to List Owners:
After the first two, this one should be pretty obvious. Send your claim
to the List Owner via their web pages or directly through E-mail.
4. Don't Fight or Flame:
I know it's hard sometimes. You claim something the right way, then turn
around and see someone on list praising there good fortune for claiming
the same thing the wrong way. It happens. It's no big deal. Like I
said before, I haven't seen many public flames but I've seen a couple
polite "I Claimed it First Posts." If this happens you can do three
things. 1: FLAME!!! FLAME!!! FLAME!!! This is not the preferred method
& in all honesty is pretty petty & childish. Besides from that, your not
gonna make any new friends of other list members or owners that way. 2:
Share. Yes Share!!! There's quite a few CO-KEEPERS. So if your real
horked about Keeping something and can't imagine living without it....ask
to share it. This pretty much refers to new things though, people who've
been Keeping an item since WTTHM aren't gonna be all that willing but you
can always try. And 3: Defer Keeper problems to the Individual List
Owners. Just tell them your boggle and they'll make an Official ruling.
But keep in mind, when you do this the List Owners decision is like the
word of God. It's final. If two people can't agree on
something....someone else will decide for you. You've got to be
willing to accept that.
5. Speed is of the Essence:
Whatever your preferred way of claiming, do it fast. The Keeper List
Owners get flooded with mail the second after an episode ends. Once
again, don't waste time sending claiming messages onlist. While your
doing that, someone else is claiming it directly & the right way. If you
claim something right after a NEW episode you don't have to check
the Keeper Pages to see if what you want is already taken....it's a
NEW EP, of course it's not claimed yet. Send your message
promptly, even time tag if you want for extra validity cuz' it's FIRST
COME....FIRST SERVE.
6. Be Polite:
Another obvious one. Being nice is always appreciated by everyone and no
one likes a jerk. It's as simple as that....
Another quick note. Keepership of any of the characters themselves,
their body parts, their love, hearts, family members, etc.... is not
allowed. Just items/situations that they've used on the show (Buffy's
Dance, Angel's Ring). I know you'll see exceptions to this on the lists,
so if you want to try your luck go ahead. It's a general disclaimer.
Also DON'T EVEN TRY to claim items that haven't even appeared yet. Just
because you see something on a preview or hear about something onlist
does not make it legal to claim or keep until that given episode actually
airs. That's just plain old fashioned cheating....don't do it.
O.K. There's the hints. Not that hard to understand and you'll find
that Keeping becomes less of a chore if you know what to do. Below I've
broken down all the Keeper Lists and List Owners. Use them.
First is Lisa Rose's Index Page. This has links to *ALL THE CURRENT
KEEPER PAGES.* Once again....If your gonna bookmark a page, THIS is

I'm posting this to the list b/c others probably have similar questions:

>shirts.
>How much, and where do i order one. I'm desperate....

Geez, if I had known this shirt thing would be a full-time job . . . :-)
Well, originally, I wasn't planning on doing another printing until after
Christmas. I have a full schedule until then.
However, since apparently there is enough interest (the printers need a
minimum of 12 shirts, preferably more) I might as well just dive into
another printing right now.
Let me think about it for awhile and look at my planner. Since I know the
printers now, and the artwork is made, it won't be as hectic. Well, like I
said, give me a day to look some stuff over and I'll let you guys know if
I'm going to wait until after Christmas or just jump back into another
printing right now.
I'll post my decision to the list shortly.

Final observations from IMG. Did anyone else notice Cordelia
watching Xander and Ampata go to the dance floor? This may have been
an involuntary reaction; If this is the case, why didn't Willow look
to see Ampata running off the dance floor. (If someone pushes you out
of the way, wouldn't you turn to see who it was?). My vote is for a
Sam and Diane (CHEERS) relationship develop between Xander and
Cordelia.

I agree, and also Willow should find someone who puts Xander to
shame. Not necessarily looks, but someone who treats her right.

I noticed this too and it reminded me a lot of WSWB when Buffy left Xander
out there on the dance floor and Willow, Cordy and Angels' eyes all
followed her out the door.

For those of you in Colorado who watch Vibe on UPN, anybody know what time
it's on? I can't find it in the listings. I already missed David
(speaking of which, anybody out there who can send me a tape?) and I don't
want to miss Sarah too.

I also don't have a problem with Buffy getting tossed about.
What I wonder is:
1) How did facing the vampire crew in the season opener affected
Buffy? She was close to over-training and perhaps took too much out of
herself. I know as a teacher, after the end of a rough term, all I want
to do is kick back with some pulp-fiction stories and let my brain
rest. I was the same way after a season of volleyball - no physical
contact for awhile.
2) Also, does anyone think that both Buffy & Angel are a tad
preoccupied with their growing feelings for each other? People in love
(or lust or deep like, whatever!) aren't as perceptive to other things.
Folks can be oblivious to the rest of the world when they are in love.

Well, Willow had this really bulky eskimo outfit on...from the way she turned
to try to look for Buffy, I would say she has a very hard time to turn her
head either way, in order to do that she has to turn her entire body to look,
if she did, it would be very awkward and by that time, the person who pushed
her would be long gone. So I guess she knew it was a wasted effort.

I also checked the page, and then sent an e-mail. I haven't gotten a reply
back yet, but that's not the point. I was watching YTV (Mummies alive or
something like that) and they had an ad for Buffy at it's regular time.
This may be a case of the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is
