Subject: BUFFY: Fan Name Voting: The Final Go Around
Here we go again. This is the last opportunity to have your voice heard
before the polls close. The new season of everybody's favorite boot wearing,
stake wielding, quick witted vampire slayer (yes, that would be Buffy) is
about to begin and so we come to the final count that will determine once and
for all an unofficial official fan name for all followers of Buffy the
Vampire Slayer. The names on the ballot below were taken from several weeks
of debate on this very list, and were by far the most commonly discussed
possibilities. In the event your favorite is not chosen, feel free to make a
bumper sticker that says something to the effect of "Don't Blame Me, I Voted
For ________". Otherwise, no whining. It's a free country, let's keep it
that way: VOTE!
Canucks and Kiwis are welcome as proof of citizenship is not a requirement,
only an admiration for all things Buffy. Heck, even those of you (and you
know who you are) who ponder the possibilities of different actors in certain
roles are welcome to vote! (let's consider that hatchet buried, OK?)
Now then, email me PRIVATELY, OFF-LIST ONLY PLEASE to PalOBuffys@aol.com with
your selection from the following:
1) Slayerettes
2) Slayerytes
3) Buffamaniacs
(Those of us getting on in years will have to harbor Buffyatrics as a quiet,
personal moniker, secretly shared amongst ourselves.)
Polls close Friday, 9/12/97, with final election results posted Sunday,
9/14/97.
Thanx for indulging me,
Mike

LOL! He tells Buffy, "if there's anywhere in the world where the blood
will kill ya fer sure, it's Vegas! I could get drunk just off the fumes!"
And wasn't Nick Cage in that other Vegas movie with the parachuting

No, no. Woe is us! All is over with. The promo has clearly

At least that show's unlikely to ever change, thus it can't
ever betray us (pity that it's so boring).

Yes, the risk of demonization is too great (instinct tells me
that would still happen). Even if his "victims" would retain
their souls as he has, he would not want to share with them
a type of existence he has apparently hated since ever since he
was "re-souled" (the gypsies would have made good cobblers!).

IMHO, Angel would not want to do this because of his own pain and
the permanent implications. He could get paralyzed by confusion
and indecision over this. It would take someone naive, impulsive
and desperately in love like Xander to say "Go for it!" and goad Angel
into saving Buffy in such a way, maybe hoping they could solve the
soul problem later. Heck, Xander reluctantly admitted to Willow
he found a vamped-out Buffy still hot in Nightmares.

Well, Disney is reputed to have a vast underground complex
beneath each of their parks (where the *real* control is
located), shielded from the light of day, not unlike the
Master's underground world.
And those silly costumes of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck,
etc... might conceal sinister employees beneath them
just as vamps' "human" faces conceal their true "game"
faces and demonic identities.
Finally, there are those who argue (convincingly) that
Disney's cutesy adaptions of tortured classics such
as Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" suck the
very life blood from those stories.
So the circumstantial evidence is piling up (like
so much dust beneath Buffy's stake) in support of
your hypothesis!

As I was watching IR, YJ and The Witch again two things struck me.
1) The internet mystery of BtVS: Giles sends Willow on the internet out
to find obscure information about mystical vampire acts, then observes to
Ms. Calendar, (and I paraphrase) "The knowledge gained from book in vastly
to superior to anything on your wonderful web pages!" My question to you:
my understanding of the internet is that for someone to find information in
it, someone has to put information *on* it. So, who put the information on
it? Who's building web pages to obscure arcanum *and* linking them to
search engines, and why doesn't our intrepid team seem curious about it?
2) During the cheerleader audition in the Witch, I was watching the girls
as they did their cartwheels and noticed how very, very clean indeed was
Ms. Chase's, whilst the Buffster's was kind of ungainly. Score one for
Charisma's dancer training and back to gymnastics with you, Ms. Gellar!

Ouch. It's called a Claddagh Ring. I'll skip the history, and tell you
what it means. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing out, it
means you are still searching for your true love. Worn on the right hand
with the heart in says there are possibilities. When worn on the left
hand with the heart facing in, it tells everyone your heart is taken
forever.
If I remember correctly, Angel wears it on his right hand with the heart
facing in. Interesting... don't you think?
This also ties in with what Giles said about Angel's tattoo originating
in Eire, since the Claddagh is a part of Irish tradition.

Subject: BUFFY: Ratings
Hola, (especially WBScott if you're out there),
Well, Philadelphia is again trying to stake Buffy. As if it isn't bad
enough that Ally McBiel is premiering a week ahead of Buffy (and a quirky
show might well be competitive for the Buffy audience), but good ole 17 is
pre-empting Prophecy Girl, which was most certainly good enough to be
competitive even as a rerun, with baseball. And folks, you think WGN is
bad, there have been many weeks when Buffy didn't show AT ALL due to
sporting events. I am accepting sympathy.
I have a friend (happens to be a fan of 7th Heaven instead of Buffy, but
she's sympathetic) who calls it the "Why Bother" network... Scott, doesn't
WB have something resembling a CONTRACT with these so-called affiliates? I
hope WB doesn't kill shows on the basis of ratings or numbers when entire
markets don't put your show on when it is advertised (or at all).
Another one for BtVSWS: I was reading a paper which talks about angle-plys,
with the by now typical buffyian-slip substitution. Here's hoping that my
WB station bothers to show the premiere next week, and (dare I even hope?)
on Monday!

Subject: Re: BUFFY: NO SPECIAL BUFFY
in regards to many of the posts I've read about Buffy/teenagers/virgins
it almost sounds like many are saying that teenagers having sex is
ALWAYS bad- and can only be the result of "peer pressure", and can never
be done SAFELY. While we may all have our different ideas of "when" the
right time to start having sex is (religious ideas, safety ideas, etc.)
I think many people overlook the whole "curiosity" motive when it comes
to sex and teenagers. Personally I think it is very naive to dismiss
all sexual behavior in "young adults" as a reaction to everything EXCEPT
what is going on in their own bodies and hearts- those two causes are
deemed unthinkable- and always replaced with negating terms like "peer
pressure..ignorance...suseptibility.." I would never deny these things
DO exist and are prevelant in any teen's life- but when you use them as
an generalized explanation towards something you don't deem "morally
okay" you are living in the dark.
Relating this directly to Buffy, I think that Joss has made Buffy a
virgin primarily because the forum is television drama... If you
remember, in the movie, Buffy was constantly having boys over (or it is
referred to...) for the night. But television is something that is
brought into the home, and therefore has stricter guidelines- because it
needs to have more MASS appeal- and may be viewed by wee little ones.
Also, the flavor of the show up to this point (re: sex) is very much
overshadowed by the danger/horrors of everyday life on the hellmouth.
Who has time for love?? Even Cordelia seems somewhat asexual.
Anyhow, I don't know if I had a point here, just wanted to remind
people that as much as society hates to admit it, teenagers have sex
much of the time because they want to~ because biologically they are
ready to, and they can fall in love just as easily as any of us... I
think we will see Buffy going towards this mentality with Angel~
although we can only speculate what exactly this will entail (what are
the precautions?)
As much as we may have hated 90210 (or not) and scorned their "very
special" episodes~ it has to be noted that they were one of the first
shows to convey teenage love/sexual relationships in a more realistic
light.
If Buffy hopes to stay realistic~ it will communicate the sexuality of
teenagers as fact, and as natural-- although I'm sure much creativity
will be thrown in as well...
sorry to have rambled, but these issues get me all in a huff!

attractive time slot would certainly be helpful.

This is an excellent point. Just to throw pennies at this controversial
topic, I think it should also be noted that we've taken a very simple view
of virginity as being either sexual or nonsexual. We should recognize that
there are many ways to be sexual creatures without necessarily "going all
the way." The best example from the show is in Prophecy Girl, where
Cordelia and Kevin are kissing in her parked car. There's no reason to
assume that both aren't completely content to "make out" in this fashion
without going further (and indeed, Kevin seemed to be quite gentlemanly,
which is why I liked him, and which is why I regret his death, whereas
Mitch with all his talk of being on top of things drove me mental), and I
suspect Cordelia would be fastidious enough to be choosy in her lovers and
her actions with them. She really does come across like La Belle Dame Sans
Merci. Lisa Rose and I have speculated off-list about the future of
Angel/Buffy along these terms. And I personally believe that things can
get quite hot 'n heavy without any base higher than second making an
appearance. Needless to say, any romance should complement the show and
should not exist simply for the purposes of romance. but that's a
different flame-worthy thread.

I don't want to seem too clever here or anything, but, aside from Giles'
mad friends, disappearing monks and Ms. Calendar's "technopagan" friends
having possibly put the stuff on the net, there's another, simpler
possibility. The whole problem in IR,YJ was that Willow was scanning in
books of prophecy without reading them (of course, I doubt she could have
read them all, since some at least were in Latin, but whatever). I recall
that an entire stack of was shown. It appeared Giles hadn't read them,
either.
Willow's search thus may have simply been to the site to which she herself
had been uploading. Sometimes it's easier to do searches for keywords, etc.
online even if you have the book right in front of you. I think, though,
it's just one of those things you have to accept - that there are Watchers,
there are slayers, and there are websites dealing with vampires and other
esoterica.
BTW, that Ally McBeal show on Fox looks interesting, but I'll tape it and
watch the Buffster anyway. It seems like it could be aiming for the same
non-Monday-Night-Football crowd. At least Roar is history, for now, at
least.

issues pertaining to teenagers that may be stretched into "supernatural"
teen pregnancy-- some sort of alien/monster insemination????
cafeteria food- some sort of poisonous or mind altering food scare??!
that's all my feeble monday morn brain can come up with for now~ more
coffee will help....
also, I was pondering the whole vampires being evil thing.. If we look
at the situation from an outsider's perspective, you could view
vampire's eating humans as just part of the food chain. Sure, we
justify calling them EVIL through describing them as DEMONS and because
they harm humans~ but perhaps from a wider perspective they are only
doing what they must to survive. Since man is at the top of the food
chain~ we see all animals and such (this is a generalization, I know,
bear with me) as lower life forms, and therfore somewhat created for us
to consume <not veggies, I know!> we use the rationale that they don't
have "souls" or that they don't have our kind of "consciousness". I
think that vampires have that same outlook on us~ as lower life forms
that don't have a real "stake" (ha ha) in the scheme of things, because
we are mortal....
maybe this is old hat, but it came to mind...

And so rises the ugly head of moral relativism. Humans
have a show called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" about a heroic
human girl battling evil human-murdering vampires. So what if
the vampires had a show called "Darla the Slayer Killer" about
a heroic vampire girl battling an evil vampire-murdering human
(before Angel so abruptly cancelled the program)?
With regard to the "food chain" argument (and all of the moral
rationalizations we use to justify our place at the top):
Larger beasts of prey (the big cats, bears, etc...) were once
above us in the food chain, until we used tools to push
them below us (and then IMHO invented moral philosophies and
theologies to justify the new hierarchy). With Buffyverse vamps,
it may be the same way. They are physically superior to all
humans except Buffy, so tools (crosses, stakes, holy water etc...)
are the only way for mere mortals hold them off.
With the exception of Darla's John Woo-esque (or Reservoir Dogesque)
double blazing automatic pistols, I haven't seen vamps use tools or
technology that effectively. Whereas our gang has its ancient weapons
plus the internet, plus goddess knows what else. Barring some
major new mojo, the Master's forces were doomed from the outset,
like the large animal predators of old.
But I have a feeling that the much ballyhooed and hipper newcomer
vamps we've been promised may be a little more techno-savvy than
their forbearers.

I am definitely on the same wavelength with you here they look like they
could be sisters. BTW the actress who plays Ally is named Calista
Flockheart. Cool name, eh?
ObBuffy: After reading "The Weapon" on the fanfic list and seeing the
promos for Ally McBeal I thought "Hey, if they did a similar story with
Buffy as the time traveler, they could use her." (Lame, I know, but you
can't always come up with an award winner).

I was watching IRYJ for the second time a few days ago, and I noticed that
when Willow was scanning Moloch into the computer, she just dragged the
handheld scanner down the middle of the page, skipping a few columns of
symbols on both sides. Shouldn't Moloch have been affected by this, or
should we just assume that he found something on the Internet to replace
what had been left out?

Y'know, it would be interesting, since you could bring one of my faves from
the Malkavian Prankthology (which is hilarious if you share my twisted
sense of humor) to life: Beheading Mickey & Minnie in a crowd of children.

I'm thinking that much of it has to do with the fact that it's not
convenient and a little too distracting for Joss/other writers to address
these things while another plotline is unfolding. However, we've already
witnessed one source, Brother Luca (and boy, do you know about Brother
Luca), and perhaps other sources of arcane information will pop up in
conversation or may somehow become intertwined with the plot. I'd like to
see an episode where Willow or Ms. Calendar find some freak who's posting
instructions for summoning demons (real instructions, mind you, not the
fascinations and hobbies of nose-picking neo-nazi punks who claim to be from
the Reformed Church of Satan who's real hobby is sitting at home watching
Jenny Jones and MTV and hanging around 7-11s 24-7--okay, this is getting a
little too involved). And so, they find this creep who's triggered the
attention of several Sunnydale students who inadvertently loose the minions
of Beelzebub on Math Class or something...and you get the picture..
