Subject: BUFFY: SMG in YM
in Octobers issue of YM there is yet another SMG prize sweepstakes! this
time you can win a necklace that she wears in "I Know What You Did Last
Summer". here's what it says:
Sweepstakes-I Know What You Did Last Summer
Sarah Michelle Gellar (TV's Buffy) stars in I Know What You Did Last
Summer, a psycho-flick about high schoolers (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan
Phillippe, Freddie Prinze, Jr., and Gellar) who accidentally kill a
guy--then cover it up. YM has the cool silver chain Sarah Michelle wore
onscreen. Want it? Send you name, address, and phone number on a 3 by 5
inch postcard to: YM/Last Summer's Necklace, P.O. Box 5944, New York, NY
10163-5490. Winner will be chosen at random. Go to page 103 for more
details...
p.103
LAST SUMMER'S NECKLACE SWEEPSTAKES RULES
All of the above rules and entry dates also apply to Last Summer's Necklace
Sweepstakes. Send a postcard with your name,age,...(same as above). Those
disqualified from entering include employees and their immediate families
of Gruner +Jahr USA Publishing, Sony Entertainment, Columbia TriStar
Pictures, and their affiliated companies, subsidiaries, and agencies. The
retail value of the necklace is $90.
it's kinda confusing but I think you have to be a female between the ages
of 12 and 25. also you have to send it in by midnight on November 2,1997.
Mechanically produced entries will not be accepted. it is a random drawing.
also in the issue there was a headline for 1997's Young and Modern Man. and
the headline was "It's Billy!" and it made me think of Xander's line in
Nightmares. do you know what i'm talking about? oh well i think that's all
the Buffy related things in the issue! just thought you'd all like to know! :)

How about something like the Police Squad series, where each episode
had a special guest star in the credits (and killed him off in the
credits)?
Each week BtVS could have a special celebrity guest vampire, who
is immediately slain by Buffy.

Oh yeah, my friends and I have been making jokes about her hair since I
first saw it last month. We've taken to calling it the "I want to get
thrown in the pool on Melrose Place" hairdo. However, that doesn't mean I
don't like it. :)

Lisa, I think that's the point. There is no reason why Willow has to be on
the outs with the popular clique. She's let herself fall into a viscious circle.
She isn't Marcie. Willow never tries to be popular. Remember the premiere,
when she's wearing that outfit that Cordelia disparages, and Willow says
"My mom bought it." But this is a whole separate thread. :)

In case you didn't know, the TV Guide pics. were not all taken at the same
time. (It's actually obvious if look closely.) The pic. on Kim's site was
taken at almost the same time as the pic. on the TV Guide _cover_.
Actually, this is kind of wierd. I got a bunch of the promo pics. last
month, and I didn't get the same ones as Kim. However, I didn't get a
different set, either. _Some_ of the pics. I have are the same as the ones
on Kim's site, but some are different. Hmmm...
You don't suppose there's somebody at the WB who has the job of just
throwing a bunch of slides up in the air, and what ever falls right side up
gets used? Heck, it's probably how the IRS decides who to audit. :)

hi
i dont know about that, it could be what happened on friends, they could
get together earlier in the series and then have some sort of a dispute
which could momentarly break their friendship and make it awkward for
buffy (which i hope doesnt happen) then when thats happening it would be
a good chance to write in about a monster or something that helps them
realise they cannot not be friends.
anyways thats my 2 cents for now, i personally hope buffy will have to
choose between Angel and Xander, hopefully xander cause hes my namesake

I don't know if anybody has seen this ad yet (or mentioned it, and I

magazine. It's a beautiful head shot of Buffy, with Angel in the background,
pushing buffy's hair away from fer neck, staring at it. The caption reads,
"What is it about dangerous women?" The bottom just has the new Buffy logo
and a WB logo.
Like I said, sorry if this one's been mentioned before, but I just had

anybody who would like a scan could just contact me personally, or maybe one

Except she did more head losing than head biting

Interesting how head loss is a recurring theme in
both series, BtvS mantis killing mates, Buffy killing
vamps, anyone killing an HL immortal...
Wonder if the actress reflected on the head fixation

To be honest, from her reaction in "Teacher's Pet," I kinda got the
impression that she wasn't. Only later did I read (someplace) that early
on, both Sarah and Joss decided that she IS.
Personally, I think what Joss meant is that he's just not interested in
taking the show in that direction. I get the feeling he'd rather
communicate through metaphor and subtlety, instead of heavy-handed
moralism.
But that's just me, guessin'.

Yup, that's exactly what I think. It's always annoying when someone else
expresses something I'm getting at better than I did! (Of course, having
a beemer or a jag will get you over the moat too, but probably not into
the guarded tower). ;)
Re Cordy's insecurity, I mean, what COULD it say about someone if
they have to go running around putting down what everyone else is wearing
(doing that practically defines her character). What's up with
that? Besides, she admitted her inner emptiness in the "Invisible Girl"
episode, though I have to admit I always doubt the sincerity of such
seemingly self-serving confessions.
I've always thought Cordelia is the most interesting character on the
show - besides being the best looking, of course. :)

Now see what we've done! (wagging my finger at the collected list).
No one in an official WB capacity has said that Buffy will be like 90210,
but now our collective paranoia has given rise to young people absolutely
convinced of this! When does the cycle end?!
Again, I plead with you all to recognize that all this talk about Buffy

Sounds like fodder for the Little Buffy Page. 5 ways that Little Buffy
knows that Little Angel *really* likes her.
1) Yanks out large clumps of her hair when all he wanted to do was pull her
pigtails.
2) Dips her pigtails in his blood pack at lunch.
3) Leaves his kills on her front doorstep.
4) Calls her "Buffy the Stoopidhead Slayer."
5) Wears his game face and chases her around the playground, screaming "I'm
going to suck your blood!"

Well, if the pumps are made of wood (the clogs could be), it could bring a
whole new level to her game. "Omigod! There's a Nine West sticking out of

Oh, say it isn't so, Joe! There's still going to be loads of action, I
hope. I mean, the romance is nice, but it's just icing on the cake. If
the focus of the show itself, not just the marketing, switches, then this
Buffaholic is going to cry for the loss of a good show (with flashbacks
to VR5) and then jump on the wagon.
Ah, maybe I'll just wait and see how the new season starts, before this
depresses me too much... :)

Hi Alexis,
Yup, that's what it means. There will never be a "Buffy is going to do it
tonight, so tune in" episode.
However, I don't know that they will never make a big deal about it. They
took a whole episode right at the start to make a big deal about Xander
being "pure." (And Buffy sure didn't act like a virgin in that episode, imho.)
It means there will never be an (a la Doogie Howser) "My boyfriend's here
and we're smearing sculpture clay on my blouse, so let's lose our
virginity" episode. That was pathetic. I never watched Doogie Howser again
after that.

Well, Jesse has already chided you for making such major speculation based
on so little evidence. So I won't go there.
Instead, think about this: You sound like I am some kid walking up to her
in the school hall and calling her "fat." Sarah's now a star. She has faked
nude pictures of her floating around. Do you think she'd be perturbed by
what I name her _hair_? Get real.

This was a list topic several weeks ago, wasn't it? A lot of people on the
list agree with you on that point.
In that scene Buffy is so certain that Xander is sexually active that she
isn't even going to worry about him while he's in the clutches of a 6 foot
virgin-eating praying mantis. She has a classic "everybody does it"
reaction. Yet, afterwards, we are supposed to believe Buffy herself is
still a virgin. Sorry, doesn't work for me.
>Personally, I think what Joss meant is that he's just not interested in

Of course, none of us are actually reading Joss's mind, but he didn't say
"Buffy can't have sex." He said "Buffy will never have a 'special'
episode." I think Joss was referring to his refusal to be "heavy-handed"
with a cheap sex scene.
If Joss really graduates them from high school, which he has practically
promised, then he may fudge. After all, this is Hollywood. There may
eventually be references to Buffy being sexually active. I think he meant
he just won't actually have a scene where the door closes, she pulls her
top off and they fade to black.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Even at my advanced age I like the romance
part of the show, and in fact think it's an integral part of the character's
motivation. Sure, it's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (not "Melrose Place" with
fangs) and will always remain as such, but if all we ever saw was a cute high
school girl staking vamps we'd all get pretty dang bored. Besides, given the
groundwork laid out last season regarding the whole who's gonna end up with
whom thing, wouldn't an increase in the amount of romance just be a natural
progression in the character's lives? Additionally, they're all at that
wonderful age where we tend to jump headlong into relationships, albeit with
our eyes not quite wide open. Don't forget, we've only seen 12 eps thus far,
barely enough to scratch the surface of the peoples lives.
Let's also not lose sight of Joss's genius here. Do any of you honestly
think he's a closet Aaron Spelling? If so, shame on you. Spelling is
brilliant when it comes to marketing, mainstream production, and superficial
character portrayal. His 25,000 square foot home is testament to that. Joss
has a creative brilliance that transcends this surface fluff, and Buffy is
testament to that.
Joss is seated at the controls here, I say we sit back and enjoy the ride.

I don't really have a problem with that, because about ten years ago, I
was in that same position. I was, but most everybody I knew wasn't, so
my natural assumption would have been the same as Buffy's. "Of course
he's not." Whether she is or not wouldn't matter, at least if I were
she.

This could certainly be true, but I inferred something slightly
different. Let me give you a for-instance.
With all the spilled blood, it might not be much of a stretch for
certain producers (who will remain nameless, but their initials are
Aaron Spelling) to write in an AIDS storyline. Ooh, serious social
commentary. Big ratings, right? "Tonight, on a Very Special Buffy."
That's the kind of sensationalistic, exploitative crap that I think Joss
was promising to avoid. Sure, there will be sexual tension. There will
be a little violence here and there. But I don't expect Buffy to ever
forget that, deep down, it's just a TV show. Entertainment.
Like you said, we're not mind-readers. But it sure is fun to speculate.

I was just watching Nightmares again, and I noticed that when the Master
is talking with Buffy (in the graveyard) he makes the sarcastic retort
of "a dream is a wish your heart makes" - ala Cinderella. It was a
funny thought, you know, the master renting "family" movies for The
Chosen One....or perhaps Joss's (don't even start the whole 's debate
anyone!) own political commentary on the evils of Disney (which I
personally prefer- although the first is very whimsical). Remember the
vampire in Welcome to the Hellmouth- the one who's fashion sense was
dated? Wouldn't it be funny if the only modern thing the vamps have
kept up on is Disney (maybe Disney is even part of the whole vampire
plot-- wear down our intelligence, brainwash our children, put in
hidden messages that make us believe that all evil is controllable and
ultimately won over through goodness and luck...etc???) I find it
funny....
