Who keeps what for Buffy. The Keepers site was misplaced by AOL, so now I'm
making a new one. If you want to be acknowledged for keeping something, you
MUST email me as soon as possible and let me know what you keep. This is only
for keepers of Buffy's things, no other character.
Thanks a bunch,
Nic :-)
PS - This is only for people who are Keepers. If you want to be one, email
me in a few days when I get everything straight.
PPS - PLEASE BE HONEST. I'm trusting you guys!!!

Subject: Re: BUFFY: ratings again
Xena and Herc do not work under Nielsens because they are syndicated
shows. No major network backs production or negotiation (though, I
believe that Universal plays a small part in their distribution).
Syndicated shows are considered hits if individual stations across the
country continue to carry it successfully.
Buffy works under the Nielsen rating system because Warner Bros. decided
they would attempt to follow 20th Century Fox's footsteps by starting
their own primetime network. (I get the sense that this list is
semi-young, so I'll remind you that for the longest time, we only had
THREE networks: ABC, NBC, CBS.) The major movie studios were not allowed
to have networks -- by an FCC ruling way back in the infancy of
television. Something changed then came Fox, then came WB, then came UPN.
Unfortunately for Buffy, the Nielsen's don't truly work for her because WB
is carried by various superstations across the U.S. and aren't "networks"
in the truest sense of the word.
If you're worried that low ratings are going to take Buffy off of the air,
the only thing I can suggest is to write ACTUAL LETTERS (which are valued
more than email -- because it takes very little effort to write an email).
And send these letters to Warner Brother execs.
Oh, before I was born, there was a little letter writing campaign to save
a little known science fiction show after its first season. STAR TREK.
Right now, though, I wouldn't worry about the fate of Buffy. It has all
the signs of becoming a cult hit. It's well-written, smart, and funny.
And capitalistically speaking, it hits all the right demographics.

OK, maybe I wasn't clear before, I'm only asking people who are presently
keepers of Buffy's stuff to tell me what they keep. I'm not taking requests
for new keepers until the 26th. If you email with a request before then, you
will be told to write back on the 26th. Anyway, all present keepers have
until the 26th to tell me what they are the keeper of. If I am not contacted
by then, their object will be given to the next person who requests it (they
can also ask again if they miss the deadline). Don't take too long!

Well, actually, the series doesn't pick off after the movie, it's just
loosely based on the movie. The ideas from the movie were used to
create the series, but to be technical, all the events that happened in
the movie didn't necessarily occur in the series. For instance, in the
series, there is and never was a Pike. There was also no Watcher (what
was Sutherland's name, Malcolm or something?). I "think" Giles is the
first watcher BUffy has had. About the only thing that corresponds
between the movie and the series is that the events from the end of the
movie with the gym partly took place in the series.
Where are all the posts from the Comicon people? Isn't it about over by
now? I'm anxious to hear what you guys have to say about it.

Subject: BUFFY: San Diego Comic Con Update!!
Heya all,
Well, as I promised, here is the run down on what happened today at the
Con.
At 3:30, an auditorium opened allowing the masses to enter. The mood of
the crowd was good, humorous, and just plain fun. I was quite amped to
be there. As we sat down, me and my friends went leaping from row five
to row two, just to be closer to the stage. Around 3:45, Alyson walked
out of a side door, followed be Joss and Nicholos. Some annoucer guy
also came out and introduced the three, as if we didn't know who they
were. Anyway's Joss started to speak, saying he had wanted to show a
video, but had left it in the car, which caused around of insults to be
fired in his direction. So with no video to show, he let us decend on
him with questions. The first one that popped up was "Is the Master
dead, and if so is the Anoited One going to take his place?". Joss
replied, " Yes you will see some stuff from the Annoited one and no the
Master isn't dead." A few more questions were raised, and answered, but
weren't anything really important to BtVS, just the actors lives and
such. Although the exchanges between Nicholos and Alyson were
hilarious. Alyson even poked fun at SMG, saying she didn't respond to
her fan letters, which Alyson did. Next someone asked what we can
expect in the next season. Joss said we can expect a Sid & Nancy
replica in the vampire community (I can't remeber their names!! Help
someone!!) Also, David is a regular next season, and Ms. Calendar is
going to be a _big_ part of next season. When asked if Giles was a)
going to be romantically involved with Ms. Calendar and b) was he going
to train Willow as the next Watcher. He deicded not to answer those
questions, saying he was acting like JMS from B5, which caused us all to
laugh. Our fifteen minutes was up, and the annoucer guy asked us to
wait while they readied the Alien 4 presentation. We asked Alyson if
they were going to sign autographs, and she said yes. The annocer said
they would sign stuff after the Aliens 4 preview at the Dark Horse
booth. Well, needless to say, 75% of the crowd bolted out of there to
get into line, which I think pissed off the annoucer guy.
Now this is where I got upset. I couldn't find Scoot for the life of
me!1 Gawd, I wish he was still subbed to list, so I could find out
where he was. Also, supposedly someone was wearing the logo I had
created for the Buffamaniacs fan name ( biohaz.alz.com ) on a shirt. I
searched the whole area, and couldn't find this person!! I had wanted
to meet some people from our fandom, but I only ended up meeting one,
who will be forwrding me a certain email addy right?? ;-) You know who
you are...
All in all, Joss gave the impression we are in for a kick ass season.
Gawfd, I can't wait....

Subject: Re: BUFFY: San Diego Comic Con Update!!
Darn it! Dang it! Poop!!!! I wanted so desperately to be the first
person to post a play-by-play of my time at the ComicCon, but alas someone
mustof had a direct internet link via a laptop at the convention. =) But
oh well, I'll share my experience with you all anyways.
Being the HUGE fan of BtVs that I am, I was so excited when I heard that
Alyson Hannigan and Nick Brandon were going to be at the ComicCon in San
Diego. Considering I live in San Diego, my heart skipped a beat. Well my
day began kinda miserably, for I didn't leave my house until 11am. By the
time I got there, parking was virtually obsolete. Every parking lot was
full..even the ones you have to pay for. I ended up parking in Horton
Plaza (downtown shopping mall) and I had to walk 10 blocks to the San
Diego Convention Center where the ComicCon was being held. I had been to
the convention center before, but the absolute magnitude of the so many
different kinds of people of all races, colors, and "dress" were there.
My main concern was to get that magic ticket for Joss's event a little
less than 4 hours away. After I got that little red ticket, I felt I was
home free: I'll just go down the main exhibit hall and browse
around....to put it bluntly the place was mobbed to the brim. Virtually
every single major/minor comic book company-publisher-collector-buyer were
all there. From DC Comics, to Dark Horse Comics, to even Heavy Metal.
There was a collage of people dressed up like their fav characters: a real
life Batman, Joker, Luke Skywalker, a Xena (Yes!, a Xena--oh how I so
deserately wanted to tell her that Buffy would kick her butt!!!) =) , and
many others.
*quick look at watch* it was 2pm. I gotta get there early to get a good
seat! Well when I got there, the room was already full. It was a
presentation for the new comic-book movie: Spawn and the creator Todd
McFarlane was giving the presentation. Okay, I'll stay for it--at the
very least, after everyone leaves, I'll be guaranteed a good seat for
Alyson and Nick. WRONG!!!!! After Spawn was over, the host ordered
everyone to vacate the room, and instructed those who were for Joss' event
to go outside and wait in line! So I grabbed my backpack and used my
highshcool track skills and Varsity football savy to dart and dodge people
to be the first in line. When I got outside, the line was a mile long.
Heartbroken, I stood in line anyways. AFter a 10 min wait, we finally
were lead in. I dunno how I did it, but I managed to get a seat in the
4th row baby!!! I don't want to repeat what was already mentioned by
Alex, but here are a few highlights:
- - The entire session lasted for about 15-20 min. Which was way too short
if you ask me.
- - Nick wore sunglasses in which he claimed to wear because he had an
eye-infection.
- - Joss did his rendition of the Grrr Arrgh bit. I loved it!
- - Alyson totally dissed SMG when she said commented on a question by the
audience on who gets the most fan mail. IN which she replied: "..I
do..AND I answer them..." the crowd really loved that. In reference to
SMG, Alyson replied: "...she has helpers."
- - A question was raised if next season would follow the same format,
where each show tied in together for a season finale.
- - Nick, when asked his age, he never did really give an exact age. all
he said was that: "..I'm old enough to die for my country..and drink a
martini (cocktail?) if we win..." whereas Alyson openly said that she was
23.
- - A humorous question was asked by a little kid: "how will the next
principle die??" *laugh* in addition, a similar question was asked about
how Sunndale High was going to replace all their dead teachers, in which
Nick replied: "..we'll just get L.A. (Los Angles) Unified teachers to do
it.." !!!!!
- - Joss mentioned that a Buffy book, specifically about the Harvest was
going to be out soon. And he mentioned something about an indendent
series of BtVs was coming out. So for those who love writing fanfics,
here's your chance to enjoy new fiction!!
- - Both Nick and Alyson and Joss said that the entire cast (including SMG
and David) had a really good chemistry. (and from the looks of the three
on stage, I don't have any doubt.
After the short 15 or so min was up, the announcer said that both Alyson
and Nick will be downstairs in the Dark Horse Comics booth to sign
autographs. So as I was dashing out the door, I bumped into Alyson
Hannigan!! *omigosh* Alyson looks beautiful on T.V. but in real life she
is absolutely stunning. She is relatively short, but her character and
demeanor is true and geniune. She stopped for a few autographs and pics
even though security guards were trying to usher her away. She kept her
smile and talked with all whom asked her questions. As I was snapping
away frenzily on my camera, trying to get close up shots of her, she
stopped and looked at me. I said "cheese", and she smiled right at me.
*hubba hubba* =)
As I jetted downstairs, I was greeted with an already forming line in the
Dark Horse Comic Exhibit. I stood in line for an hour and a half waiting
to get Alyson, Nick, and Joss's autograph. When I got to the table, they
there were...the three objects of our many discussions and debates on this
mailing list there scribbling frantically their autographs on large Buffy
Posters. I'm still tingling from the experience.
Some afterthoughts:
After meeting Joss in person and hearing him speak and handle the audience
and his many devoted fans, I know that he's an absolute genius. There's
an aura about him that just draws you to him.
Nick on the other hand, embodies many of Xander's qualities on the tv
screen. He's witty, but not at all shy in real life. He knows how to
handle himself, and his chemistry with Joss and Alyson is a wonder. But
his persona didn't portray a dorky guy, but rather a cool and suave
person. Just laid back and totally movie-esque but on a down to earth
level.
I'm totally in love with Alyson Hannigan now. We should start our own
mailing list just for her. She's so cute. Words cannot begin to
describe. She shows a genuine interest in her fans. And the character of
Willow she plays on BtVs, is totally the same real life for Alyson. It
was like 10 min when there were on stage for her to actually say
something. She, Nick, and Joss must've had already signed over 200
autographs when I got mine. And she still kept on smiling and laughing,
and chatting with her fans. A true actress indeed. Like I mentioned
before, I always frowned on ppl who had crushes on tv/movie stars.
Heh, what can I say? People change.
I wish I had a camcorder, but I only took a lot of pics of Alyson (mostly,
duh!!), nick, and Joss. Oh yeah, I saw what I thought was Scott, but I'm
not sure. He had long hair and was sitting in the first row talking with
everyone.
Oh, I did manage to wear a yellow badge saying: Xmission Only one
person scared the crap out of me when she almost stabbed my heart out (no
pun intended) when she recognized the name. But due to my excitement, I
neglected to introduce myself. So if you're reading this, I'm that short
guy with the back pack and Xmission on a yellow badge. =)
Well that's all folks. I know that there will be a zillion responses to
this post and others about their experience at the ComicCon. As for me,
I'm glad that I went. I'll scan the pics when I get them developed and
would gladly e-mail them to whomever who wants them. I dont' have my
homepage just yet, but if those who do have homepages, I'll let you post
them, just as long I get the credit for taking them.
Joss, Alyson, and Nick. I tip my hat to you all. You did a fine job. And
thanks for the autographs. *8^)

I was in a WB store at the mall recently, and asked if they had any
Buffy merchandise. (I didn't expect them to, but I wanted them to
know that there was demand.) The sale clerk said that they didn't
have anything currently, but thought that there would be stuff
"later".
When Scott from WB (aka "He Who Speaks with Tongue of Frog") comes
back from the con, you can probably get a more official answer.

Subject: BUFFY: More on ASH from "Ms. Calendar"/Mothballs
Hi all,
Heard from my source again and she had the following to share:
Esp for the GASPers and Kim the Keeper of the Mothballs:
We were right! It is the mothballs that Tony said we missed, well Kim P.
is the proud owner of them as of 2 days ago. Tony is hoping that they
will show the mothballs next season. Congrats Kim it will probably be
mentioned in the article :D
ASH and his girls at Universal Studios:
Tony took his girls to Universal Studios last week. While he was in line
at the concession stand, he hears these two women giggling and carrying on
behind him. the sort of 'isn't he a star, no, you talk to him' kind of
stuff. So he turns around and speaks to them and one says "I just love
your spots! (commercials)" the other goes, "No! I was thinking Buffy!
And that VR thing!" He said it was a real kick to see that his fans are
growing along with his career.
Ms. C also wanted me to add that Tony was the easiest interview she's ever
done, he was so relaxed and enjoyable. They both laugh so hard at times,
you can't hear half the interview on her tape
No news yet as to what mag it will be in or when it will be out. Over and
out!

I've noticed some eapeats. Like Willow's necklace. And Xander's. Okay,
so their not outfits, but hey.
Also, has anyone else noticed that all the girls (this referring to
Cordelia, Willow and Buffy, usually) almost always wear the exact same
earrings as eachother? I mean, Willow's are the same as Buffy's, and
Buffy's are the same as Cordelia's.

Actually, there are Nielsons for syndicated shows, but they're placed in a
different category, and not as widely published as network shows.
Clearance is one measure of success, but the ratings determine profit or
loss. For an action drama, a 4.0 rating implies that there is a very
strong chance that a show is profitable for its producers. If you've got a
tight budget, and your demographics are good ala Babylon 5, you can make a
profit with something in the 3 range.
Overall, it's a good thing that Buffy is at WB right now because WB seems
to be concentrating on long-term development of the network, and getting
an identity, rather than short term profits. Also, timeslots for the
syndies are becoming increasingly scarce, and a lot of action shows are
being pushed out of the syndie market even if they are profitable.
(According to the Great Maker, B5 has been profitable every year it's ran,
but still would barely get renewed.)

>From time to time (and this depends largely on your ISP), we have to
uns*bscribe people from the list. This is almost always due to some
technical problem with your ISP. When it happens, we can't get a message
to you to tell you what's happened; you'll just stop receiving list mail.
It can be for one of the following reasons.
MAILBOX FULL
This affects AOL users more than anyone. If you are an AOL user, and you
don't get to check your mailbox at least once a day, it fills up, and
things start bouncing back to us. If it happens a lot, or you know you
won't be able to check your email at least once a day please consider
switching to digest.
SERVICE UNAVAILABLE
Sometimes ISPs go down for no reason. Hotmail was having problems with
this, though not recently (knock wood). Juno also seems to go down from
time to time, as does usa.net. If we get a lot of bounces back saying
there's a local configuration error or the service is unavailable, we
uns*bscribe you.
LOCAL CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS
Some ISPs put in their machine name in the outgoing messages, even though
it isn't part of your regular email address. This doesn't affect that many
people, but it might affect someone if changes are made to their local ISP.
Unlike a listserv which has a NO MAIL function, majordomo doesn't, which
means that I don't know that there's any way around this problem right now.
I'm checking into it.
NOTE: I usually don't uns*bscribe someone unless I get at least three
bounces from their address.
***YOU WILL NEVER BE UNSUBSCRIBED FOR VIOLATING LIST RULES WITHOUT BEING
CONTACTED BY US. If you've been suddenly unsubscribed and haven't heard
from either of us, it's due to a technical problem. *****
IF YOU STOP RECEIVING LISTMAIL
1. Contact me or Jill at romana@mindspring.com or jtkirby@mcs.com.
2. Send a s*bscribe buffy command to majordomo@xmission.com
3. DO NOT send a test post to the list.
MISCELLANEOUS
Some of you might notice that your posts don't always go through. That
could be for several reasons.
1. You had administrative words in your post, such as s*bscribe or h*lp.
Those bounce to the administrative address, so try masking those words.
2. You tried to post from an address other than the one you have
subscribed. We've got the list configured so that only members can post to
prevent spamming and trolls from doing stupid things.
3. Sometimes xmission does weird things. I sometimes will post two things
in quick succession, and only one will drop. The other will take hours or
days to drop. If something hasn't dropped in a few hours and it's timely
or important, check with either me or Jill for permission to repost it to
the list.

Subject: BUFFY: ADMIN: Netiquette
Please save this post for future reference.
In addition to the list rules, here are a
few suggestions that are established netiquette. These aren't rules per
se, but Jill and I would like listmembers to observe them anyway.
Basically, the common theme of all these suggestions involve wasted
bandwidth. Most of you I think will agree that keeping that to a minimum
is a necessary thing on the buffy list due to the high traffic.
NETIQUETTE
1. When in doubt, and particularly when something is off topic, take it to
private email. Since the reply to on the list is set up to automatically
go to Buffy, Jill and I are well aware that mistakes will happen from time
to time. If it does, you'll probably get a note from one of us about it.
If you do happen to make a mistake, there's no need to post to the list
apologizing, since that also is a waste of bandwidth. <g> Going to private
should be your first choice. If you do post something off topic to the
list please include an ObBuffy in your post.
For those of you wondering what an "ObBuffy" is, it stands for "Oblicatory
Buffy" meaning that you include some comment, observation, etc., about
Buffy the Vampire Slayer to an otherwise off-topic post.
2. Please, no one line "this is a test" posts. If you think there's a
problem with the list, please take one or more of the following steps.
a. Write to either me or Jill (romana@mindspring.com or jtkirby@mcs.com)
and tell us what you think the problem is. We'll answer you ASAP.
b. Send a s*bscribe note to majordomo@xmission.com since you may have been
uns*bscribed due to bouncing. If you aren't s*bscribed, that'll resub you;
if you are s*bscribed, you'll get a note back saying you're still on the
list.
c. If you *must* send a test post (and this should only be as a last
resort) please make it a post relating to buffy.
3. No "me too" posts. Those should go private, or should include more
discussion.
4. At a bare minimum, please sign and place your email address at the end
of each post if you don't have a .sig. This makes it easier for people to
contact you privately if they need to. Some people's mailers strip out the
headers with this information which is why you should include it in the
body of your email.
5. Please make sure you properly attribute quotes when replying to
previous posts.
HOUSEKEEPING
Remember, if you're going away on vacation, or losing access to a
particular account, uns*bscribe from buffy. If you receive too much mail
that goes unanswered, messages start bouncing to the administrative address
for each post sent to buffy. Unsubscribing keeps us happy, keeps your
mailbox clean, and keeps your ISP happy, too.
Also, since it's not clear, the address for the list is buffy@xmission.com,
whether you're on the regular list or on digest.
I think that's about it. Back to your regularly scheduled Buffy
discussion. :-)

To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command:
subscribe buffy-digest
