Subject: BUFFY: Buffy's sudden desire for Angel
First, THANK YOU, Susan, for posting David's AOL chat!
Lisa asked:
>>>In the episodes leading up to 'Angel,' it seemed that Buffy wasn't that
into Angel. She gave him a bad time and kinda blew him off (even though
Cordy was way into him). But then, at the beginning of 'Angel,' she's all
dreamily into him. When did this happen? Offscreen?<<<
Actually, I think Buffy has always liked Angel. In the pilot, when she
mentions her encounter with *cryptic guy,' she tells Giles he's "dark,
charming...in an annoying sort of way." As someone stated earlier, she's
trying to deny her interest in him. More importantly, you missed two
*important* Buffy/Angel moments in "Teacher's Pet." First, Angel comes
to warn Buffy about a vampire with a claw, and he ends up giving Buffy
his leather jacket. Second, after Buffy dispatches the vampire, Angel
comes to see her. She wants to know who he is and how to reach him,
but he gives her this adorably sly smile and starts to walk away. Buffy
stops him to say he can have his jacket back, and in a really smooth and
charming voice, Angel replies: "That's okay. It looks better on you." He
walks away, turning once to glance at Buffy. Buffy looks after him and
voices what I was thinking..."Oh, boy!"

Hey, Hendu, I like your analysis of Angel's rather hasty exit
from the house. Looking at the episode again, it's pretty
clear to me that he exited standing up - his arms are up to
cover his face. That would seem to indicate to me that he flung
himself out, rather than was flung by Buffy. If Buffy had given
him the heave, he'd probably have come out sideways..some other
posture, anyway. Don't ya think?

Every time that I see Buffy, it's easy to notice the similarities
between Buffy and the Highlander franchise. They both deal with these
supernatural issues, except Buffy deals more with the occult.
What I am trying to get at is that Highlander has been successful
between the show and the movies. I would like to see Buffy do that
also. I really did not think highly of the movie because it was rather
campy but the series really rocks.
Has Joss ever mentioned that he would seek another movie with the new
cast somewhere down the road. I think that a movie would be an
excellent venue for Buffy.

Subject: BUFFY: Vampire question
I know this may at first appear to be irrelevant to BtVS, but just keep reading.
In the '80s, there was a vampire movie called "The Lost Boys" with Corey
Haim, Corey Feldman, Jason Patric (the guy who took over K. Reeves in
Speed2), and Kiefer Sutherland. In the movie, J.P.'s character meets a gang
of vampires (led by K.S.) and starts to slowly become a vampire when he
drinks from a bottle of blood he mistakened for wine. We are then told that
for J.P. to regain full humanity (he's not totally a vampire because he
hasn't "fed" on anyone yet), the lead vampire must be killed. And at the
end, we assume that J.P.'s humanity was restored when the lead vampire died.
My question: Could killing the lead/master vampire restore the humanity of
a vampire who was converted by the lead/master vampire either directly or
indirectly (through one of the lead vampire's servants/minions)? Or is this
only possible for those that aren't fully vampires, like J.P.'s character in
"The Lost Boys"?
Now the relevance to BtVS:
This could be a possibility for making Angel "human" again. Angel was
bitten by Darla who I assumed was converted by the Master since she was "his
favorite." Thus, if Buffy succeeds in killing the Master, could she be
killing two "vampires" with one "stake" by getting rid of the Master AND
restoring Angel's humanity? And if the Master wasn't the one that converted
Darla, could an ongoing story for Angel be a search for the ultimate
master/lead vampire? Either way, this would provide some hope for Buffy and
Angel's doomed love. But Angel is fully a vampire since he's fed on humans,
you might say. But then again, the restoring of his soul by the Romani
gypsies in my opinion makes Angel partly human.
What do you think?

I really enjoy seeing Buffy and the gang fighting the forces of darkness
in an aggressive manner, rather than taking the defensive. You really
can't just sit back and "hope for a happy ending" when you deal with dark
forces. You have to make a stand. That's why I watch Buffy.
A comment about The Slayer's Legion for a name. It sounds cool, but a
little reminiscent of the forces of darkness. Check out the Book of Luke,
Chapter 8 verse 30 where Jesus converses with a demon. Translations vary
but this is pretty close.
Jesus: What is thy name?
Demon: Legion. For we are many.
Still Slayer's Legion is a great suggestion. Any other ideas?

On the "Lost Boys" solution to the Angel problem:
I have a hard time buying that killing the original vampire who made
other vampires, will provide an immediate cure for vampirism. This "Lost
Boys" solution seems to exist in movies where a quick fix is necessary to
cure a main character of being a vampire before the end of the movie. I
think that curing a vampire should be very difficult.
What do you guys think?

Even if Buffy did throw him out, he'd still have time to cover up his
face. When Buffy found him and told him to get out, she wasn't
incredibly agitated or in a fit of rage. She didn't scare him so much
that he would throw himself out of a window. Even though he was a
vampire, he still had the feelings for her. He had enough compassion
not to read her diary and offer to sleep on the floor, I think he'd also
havbe enough compassion to leave out the fromt door instead of ruining a
window by throwing himself out of it.
> If Buffy had given him the heave, he'd probably have come out sideways..some other

Yet we've already seen that he has incredible agility, I mean, he is
after all a vampire. I don't think it would have been too hard for him
to land on his feet. In my opinion, it's clearly obvious that he was
thrown out of the house by force. I don't really even see any reason to
think otherwise. I believe that the writers made that obvious. After
he's thrown out of the window, he looks up and sees Buffy standing
there. Why would she have gotten so close to the window. Also, why
would he have looked back like that and held his mouth if he jumped out,
kind of like he was surprised. If he had jumped out, I would have
expected him to have just run off without turning around like he did
after they kissed.

Twelve more things Buffy's Mom might have said to Buffy

1. Mr. Giles tells me you landed the leading role in
your school slay!
2. All work and no slay makes Buffy a dull girl.
3. Slay what you will, I'm *not* changing my mind!
4. Someday you'll grow up and move away from Sunnydale.
You're here to slay, gone tomorrow.
5. Don't commit to a single vampire too early. It's OK to
slay the field.
6. I have a headache. Would you please slay something a little
more soothing?
7. I'm going to a gallery convention this weekend. But I'm
concerned that "while the cat's away, the mice will slay."
8. You're never around anymore. Invite your friend Darla over
and slay at home tonight!
9. What a sense of humor. Oh Buffy, you slay me!
10. You gotta stake slay while the sun doesn't shine!
11. (Singing the Vampire Killer early warning system lullaby)
"Slay bells ring, are ya' listenin'?..."
And finally:
12. (Reading from the V.K. classic, 'Twas the Night before Harvest')
"...And what to my wondering eyes should transpire, but a little
girl slay-ing eight tiny vampires..."

Okay, I know this subject has been dragged out numerous times, but I may
just comment one last time. Lawless had some great comments on why Angel
would be thrown out instead of just flinging himself. And I totally agree.
I just want to add that in the pilot (okay, I didn't watch the entire
thing, but I DO rememebr this part) epi, when Buffy and Xander were
underground and the vamps were trying to get in through the door, right
before they shut the door on the vamps' hands, I remember her flinging one
of the vamps out of the room. HE definitely went head first, not
sideways.

[In reference to a possible solution to Angel's predicament--he'd be
restored to humanity by Buffy's killing the Master]
This seems like a valid possibility. I should point out, however, that
there's another option: Anne Rice's vampires all descend from a single
"Master" vampire (Akasha from _The Queen of the Damned_) as well, but in her
universe, if the Master dies, all the subsidiary vampires do, too.
Which would equally solve Angel's dilemma, but perhaps not in the most
romantic possible way.

But that's David B., the *actor*, not Angel, the vampire. You don't
have to lust for the actor in order to lust for the character he
plays (or visa versa). Although it *does* help. Sometimes actors
are more impressive in their roles than they are in real life.
I think Xena, Warrior Princess is mesmerizing onscreen, but I find
Lucy Lawless the actress to be pretty uninteresting in her

FYI for all of you who have never been to Los Angeles and have no idea
what we're talking about. :) Torrance is south of Los Angeles, in the

My thoughts exactly!! I recognized the name from the movie, which I saw on
TV quite a while ago (most of it, at least). It was all right, but I
thought it was just a dumb comedy. So I thought I'd check it out (the
series) to see if it was just as dumb. Oh man, was I wrong! Now it's my
second favorite series (next to Star Trek). I don't watch much TV, but
Buffy is _definitely_ worth my time. It's serious, but still funny, the
characters (and actors) are great, and the writing is excellent! I really
have to like a show to wade through 257 E-mails in three days. :)
Now, back to counting down to the season finale... which BTW, could we
pleeease be really careful with spoiler warnings next week, 'cause the
Wicked Ghastly Network (who do I credit for that great quote?) is
preempting Buffy 'till Wednesday.

Vampire-Slayer Buffy Battles Master
By DENNIS ANDERSON
.c The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (May 29) - At the end of her freshman season, "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer" has to face the legions of hell, battle a satanic majesty
called ''The Master'' and decide whether to attend the prom without a date.
This is apocalypse Sunnydale High School-style: The earth opens up. The
Undead rise. Buffy Summers is all dressed up, but has no one to go out of
this world with.
In the series' season finale on The WB, airing at 9 p.m. EDT Monday and
rated TV-PG, it's just another night on the job for Buffy, full of shocks and
scares, mixed with martial arts and hip California girl humor that's dead-on
funny.
''Oooh, here comes a bad guy,'' Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar,
deadpans as she high-kicks a fanged creature to kingdom come.
Buffy is the brainchild of Hollywood screenwriter Joss Whedon, whose
writing career got launched in the heaven and hell that was ''Roseanne.''
He went on to the big screen, receiving an Oscar nomination for the ''Toy
Story'' script and writing blockbusters like ''Speed'' and ''Twister.''
When he felt the movie version of ''Buffy'' didn't realize the potential
of the character he created, he ignored his agent's protests and dived back
into series television.
''Television's a writer's medium,'' Whedon said. ''There's a better
chance things will come out the way you originally envisioned them.''
So Whedon envisioned a bittersweet, smart girl battling all the minions
an underworld can serve up. Vampires, yes - but also demons and zombies, and
even a sex-starved praying mantis.
''If it would have just been vampires, I'm not sure if we could have
carried it off,'' Whedon said. ''But when you added zombies and demons, I
began to believe we'd have a series here.''
Some critics have compared Whedon's work to a dark and clever 1988 film
comedy called ''Heathers.'' But Whedon says the source goes back much further
than the film that gave Winona Ryder her breakout role.
''If you look at movies like 'I Was a Teenage Werewolf,' you'll see this
combination of teen angst and horror has been going on for a long time,'' he
said.
Anyone watching ''Buffy'' for the first time probably feels a vague sense
of recognition when they first spot actor Anthony Stewart Head, who plays
Buffy's mentor, Rupert Giles, or ''The Watcher.''
He's also that charming Englishman who romanced the glamorous lady next
door in those Taster's Choice coffee commercials.
On ''Buffy,'' Head is the only adult up to speed with the teen-age crowd
about the vampire threat at Sunnydale High. ''Because I'm English, I'm
strange anyway,'' he explained.
Head is a stranger in a strange land that he's wanted to visit since the
days he thrilled to ''Rin Tin Tin'' and ''Whirlybirds'' on the telly.
''I love Los Angeles. You can almost feel the creativity in the air,'' he
said in a telephone interview from his home near Bath, England.
''I always wanted to play a vampire,'' Head said. ''It doesn't look like
I'll get to on 'Buffy,' but you never know. I have no idea what Joss has
cooked up for the second season.''
It's going to have to be big: In the season-ender, Buffy gets way dead.
As he delivers the killing blow, The Master stares at Buffy's prom gown.
''I like your dress,'' he quips.
Buffy's not likely to stay down for long, of course. If there's one theme
that enlivens vampire lore and all things Undead, it's that resurrection is
just part of the deal.

Since for odd reasons I've been focusing rather strongly on this movie lately
<g>, I'll answer: The only ones that came back across in Lost Boys were the
ones who hadn't killed anyone yet. Meaning that David et all (the Gang in
LB) who had killed would remain vampires no matter what happened to their
Master. But Michael, Starr and Laddie all returned to normal mortlity when
their Master was killed.
Since Angel spent well over a hundred years killing joyfully, I don't think
that this would apply to him.
And since this is my first post to this list... <wave> Sigh. I got sucked
into this show while at SyndiCon and now I'm stuck. Arrrrrr! Another

ummm....just curious if anyone else was wondering about this...but wasn't
there a door right behind Angel in the kitchen....like the way Darla
left....wouldn't it have been easier for him to have just bolted for that
door (after laying Buffy's mom gently on the floor of course)....just
wondering :)

Question: IS SARAH EVER GOING TO GET A COMPUTER?

AngelDavid: Both are beautiful, but they are different kinds of art.

AngelDavid: No personal fan club, or for the show. This is all so new to me.
But you can always send
AngelDavid: mail to the WB network for me!
Pomond: I think you can also find fan club information on the WB site
(Keyword: WB)
Question: she's the slayer, he's a vampire. where is this relationship
going? i know if i were
Question: buffy, i'd have him make me into a vampire so we could be together
forever!
AngelDavid: Hey folks, Bertha Blue, my dog says hi!
Pomond: Hey, Bertha!
Pomond: So whaddaya think, David? Do Buffy and Angel have a chance?
Pomond: (in a relationship, that is)
AngelDavid: I'm pretty tormented right now, so it's not very fun being a
vampire. I'm torn between
AngelDavid: two worlds. But I'd love to watch the sunrise with Buffy, just
once! :)

Slayerettes, definitely. It has the right not-too-serious tone, and it was
actually used on the show. Slayers is too serious, and Watchers is not
show-specific enough (there are Watchers on Highlander.)

Subject: Can true Vamps "love"? (Was Re: BUFFY: Darla's Broken Heart)
At 03:01 PM 5/28/97 -0700, thus sprake Lisa Rose:
>Did anyone else notice that Angel broke Darla's
>heart in two different ways? 1) Figuratively, by
>abandoning her and falling in love with a slayer.
Hmmmm...since I don't believe either Darla or the before-curse Angel could
have been capable of "love," I don't think it's fair to hold Angel
responsible for breaking Darla's heart. In *that* meaning of the word
"heart," she doesn't have one to be broken.
Or do people think that Vampires *are,* in fact, capable of feeling
something like what we consider "love" for their own kind? That they just
don't show it toward humans because they view us the way we tend to view
cockroaches? ("Joe's Apartment" notwithstanding.) Could a Vampire take a
human as a "pet" and love that human the way we love our dogs and cats?
What do you folks think: are Buffy-style vampires entities that are entirely
mystical in nature and Evil by definition, or could they be viewed more as
an alien species -- too different and inimical to us for our two species to
ever live together, but not "Evil" in the same way that we're not "Evil" for
wiping out cockroaches whenever we see them?
I tend to vote for "mystical evil" because the other option gets pretty
messy, but given the history that's been shown -- "Demons" ran the world
before humanity got the upper hand somehow -- one could make a case for the
demons and their descendants being justifiably pissed that humans came along
and took their world away from them, much as one of us would be very
irritated to come home one day and find our house had been overrun by
cockroaches. And most people wouldn't feel the slightest bit guilty about
going out and buying the biggest roach bomb we could find to slaughter the
little buggers.
Just imagine...once a generation comes a female cockroach with the power to
stand against the darkness. It's the adventures of "Buggy the Human Slayer!"
I'll stop now. It's really late.
