SPOILER SPACE:
Okay. I really like this ep because who didn't feel invisible at one time
or another in high school? Also, I find it interesting that in this show
there is someone for everyone, i.e. everyone can relate to one or more
characters. I think that's one of the reasons this show is popular
(besides it being fantastic, funny, well-written, witty, etc.....:) I did
find the exclusion of Buffy from Xander and Willow a little contrived. For
continuity sake I would have liked a better build up, maybe mentioning
something funny from their past experiences in a different ep. Cordelia
reminds me of a few girls I went to high school with, but they weren't so
vocal in their self-centeredness.
Anyway, did anyone else think of how Cordelia/Buffy relates to "My
So-Called Life" in the Raeanne/popular girl relationship? (Sorry, I forgot
the characters name, she used to be Claire Dane's characters best friend)
I think there could be a definite similar relationship happening there.
The popular girl who doesn't want to be seen talking to the strange girl
and vice versa, but does anyway, both characters completely in denial of
their "friendship". Anyone understand what I'm trying to say? (it's been a
long two days) :)
I was disappointed by the trailers. They didn't show zip! What is playing
next week anyway?
One last thing, we now know that vampires don't have reflections in BTVS.
That Giles and Angel have a bond due to similar feelings (ie. protection of
Buffy) and interests - books, and that vampires don't breath. OF course,
being the undead it kinda figures that they don't breath, I mean, who needs
the air? :)

Actually, it was "It's not like I need the air" meaning that Vampires
don't need to breathe, so it wouldn't matter to Angel if there was gas
in the boiler room..
As to the spray paint method of catching Marcia...would have been funny
to see the Principal catch them in the act of 'vandelism of school
property', don't you think?

Perhaps it requires a certain amount of time for things to become
invisable as well... or maybe only things that are "part" of the

as other things do not.
Maybe the invisable girl wasn't wearing any clothing?

According to most myths surrounding Vampires. They do not breathe. Most
of their organs stop working expect for the heart. This has been explain
in a book about Vampires if I can find it I will post the name of it. It

Cordelia in The Invisible Girl was hilarious. She is a classy bitch and
the insults are done tongue-in-cheek so they come off not as cruel as
they sound. Truly though, at the basis of it all,
I think all the credit goes to Joss Whedon. These last two episodes
Nightmares and The Invisible Girl have his hand in it more than the
others. Good writing...without it you don't have a show with that
special something.

I do not think Cordelia is a bitch. The scenes
with her and Buffy and the gang were rather
poignant and showed the true Cordelia. She
seems to lack any self-will as seen with what
her jerk of a boyfriend did to her. I just think
that her being a "bitch" is a role she plays
because that is her perception of being
popular. Her scenes with Buffy and her
thank you speech i think was the true
Cordelia.
Could she be so callous to Buffy in public
because she is jealous. Buffy was like
Cordelia but broke the chain Cordelia
has not.

i felt really bad for buffy. even with her friends, she's still an
outsider. willow and xander, they've got history. and when buffy tripped at
the beginning i kept picturing the big bully picking on the nerd.

well, on the official web page, the season finale is "to be announced". but
in one way i don't mind the wait, but in another, i can't wait for the
episode. suspense i guess.
i've got my own question. in the bronze, right before buffy hit marcie, was
it in slow motion? i couldn't really tell. i was like, i'm so sure that
marcie will let buffy just sit there for a minute so she can figure out
where she is. so, was it in slow mo?

I think that's an excellent observation. It got me to wondering a bit,
though. Earlier I made fun of the fact that we don't see anyone with braces
or acne or a serious weight problem among the student body. [Side note: I
was very pleased that the literature teacher had a more realistic build than
usual.] This is understandable because they don't generally put unattractive
people on TV -- talk shows and "reality" shows excepted, of course.
But this statement about marginalized teens got me to thinking --
Where are the black kids at Sunnydale? The Asian kids? The Latino kids? The
handicapped kids?
This may be a side effect of the fact that their extras are (apparently)
real high-schoolers from Torrence, but it's kind of bothersome that the
school body is so...bland. I think maybe they should spice it up a bit by
bringing in some more diverse extras. (Budget? We don't need no steenkin'
budget...)

Yeah, clearly none of the Slayerettes have ever done any fantasy
roleplaying. Knowing how to combat invisible foes is real basic stuff ;)

I'd prefer to go with a more magic/psychology oriented set of rules for this
instead of a physics-style set of rules. Marcie became invisible because no
one noticed her, which presumably includes anything directly associated with
her, like her clothes. Anything that the student body regarded as "part of
Marcie" would therefore be invisible, while anything not considered a "part
of Marcie" would be visible. Thus, the curtain was visible because no one
connected that with the girl they were ignoring. Ditto for the dust on the
chair, the floating bat, and so on.
This nicely explains what we saw on the show, but it doesn't help much with
the flour/paint question. If you want to play along and accept this
justification, I'd be inclined to think it *would* have worked, because a
coating of flour or paint would have made Marcie noticeable; in the same way
that Marcie swinging a baseball bat would be "not Marcie," being covered
with goop would be "not Marcie."
Which only leaves the question of why the Slayerettes didn't think of it,
and all I can come up with is a lapse of intelligence. That's to be expected
of Bufyf, Willow and Xander, maybe, since teenagers are notorious for not
always using their heads, but shame on Giles!

if you're invisible, can other invisible people see you? or are you still

Well, there was the "He stole my Barbie...we were five," in the pilot. And
in "The Pack" Xander and Willow were off watching the Zebras mate while
Buffy was wandering around, though in that case it looks like they wanted
Buffy to be there and she chose not to be.

Yeah -- I think Cordelia's character is rather overdone. I can see her
going out of her way to be popular because it's better to be alone in a
crowd, but that doesn't explain why she feels it's necessary to be
gratuitously nasty. I mean, in my High School bullies could be popular and
powerful in their own little clique of hangers-on, but they didn't generally
get elected Homecoming Queen/King.
>I was disappointed by the trailers. They didn't show zip! What is playing

A repeat of "Angel." The Ultimate TV site says the season finale will be on
the following week. I suppose they figured most people wouldn't be watching
TV on Memorial Day.

I think that's supposed to be part of the joke of the show -- all this
majorly weird stuff happens at Sunnydale and everyone pretty much takes it
in stride. Cordelia in particular tends to shrug off anything she encounters
that doesn't fit with her world-view. In the pilot, we overhear her brushing
off the big vampire attack at the Bronze as something more normal (might
have been gang violence, I don't recall offhand.) Xander and Willow express
disbelief that no one is making more of a big deal over what happened --
"The dead rose. We should at least have had an assembly!" -- but Buffy says
that's just the way people are. At least in the Buffyverse.

must be my overactive imagination, but the way cordelia kept looking over
her shoulder as she said it kinda said to me like she wanted them to
understand that she didn't really mean it.

Ummm... do we know for sure that Marcie was *wearing* clothes? There was
a novel about invisibility published a few years ago, in which the
protagonist found it very inconvenient that he had to go constantly naked
(and he was in a climate less sunny than California).

In the pilot, Willow mentioned that Xander stole her Barbie when they were
5 years old. And in "Nightmares", Willow reminded Xander about the
traumatic events at his 6th birthday party.

I enjoyed "Invisible Girl" very much, especially for its depiction of the
little things that can become very frustrating in the high school "friends"
game. The yearbook thing was right on target -- how many of us at one point
asked random people to sign our yearbook just for the sake of having a lot of
signatures, and as a result got a lot of "Have a nice summer"s? I also
thought Buffy's exclusion from Willow & Xander's close friendship was very
accurate. Despite having a group of friends, there are times in my high
school experience when some friends have closer friendships, share moments
like W & X's inside joke, and one of us ends up being excluded and feeling
pretty much like Buffy. I'm not sure whether to congratulate Joss & the
writers for their accuracy or pity them for still remembering the
insignificant yet important moments of high school horror. It's a comfort to
me, though.
