I've been wondering the same thing. I do think Xander seems to be more
willing to take risks. This may be Buffy's influence. He has a natural
caution, but he didn't hesitate to help Willow once released from the
Hyena spirit. I would love to know more about the Xander/Willow
friendship. They've probably been hanging out for so long, Xander can't
help but take Willow for granted. We may see him change as Willow
grows more and more self-confident. It would be interesting to explore
what Xander's feelings would be if Willow started dating someone else
and didn't hang on his every word.

And, Christina, there's no such thing as "way over-analyzing." ;-)

I tried to get the Velvet Chain CD at Tower, Sam Goody, Waxie Maxie,
etc., and noone had it. As far as I know, it's such a new LA band that
you need to send away for the CD. I think it's worth it. :-)

BTW, I found the only copy of Sophie's CD available in Annapolis. I'm a
very happy camper!!

Now, does anyone know what band is featured in the Pack slo-mo
sequence?

My personal recommendation on the virtual stake...seize it up with a blitz
of email that it can't possibly clear until into the next millenia, and
then rest assured that hitting the year 2000 will cause a fatal error.

I think she had a dad - thin and dark haired guy, flitted past in
the scene at the beginning where Buffy's parents leave her alone in
the house with her boyfriend for the night.  Sheesh, now I'll have to

Actually, Buffy's father was played by James Paradise.  He appeared, but I
do not remember him having a speaking part.  At one point, her Mom called to
him right after she asked Buffy the time.  In the series, Buffy stated that
he had divorced her Mom ("Witch").

Just a request for people. When you put spoiler spaces into a message,
please do NOT use one period (.) on a line as a spoiler space. Some e-mail
protocols read this as "end the message" and chop off everything after
that.  This is not only a problem with single messages, but can also cause
someone to lose a good hunk of a digest if that's how you're subscribed.

A very nice analysis, Helen.  I think you've hit on it exactly.
I know that a number of us who have moved to Buffy fandom were
"burned" by list fighting in other fandoms, and I truly
appreciate the fact that this list is designed to curb that
sort of behaviour.  It may seem restrictive to some, but in
the long run I think it will work out.

Well, we know he _knows_ Willow likes him (at least since The Pack,
since he remembers everything that happened there.)  But, that's a
fairly minor point.

I used to dislike Xander intensely for how he was treating Willow.  But
it was pointed out to me that I was displaying a double standard.  He's
treating Willow exactly the same way that Buffy is treating him.  And
it is actually a fairly standard way to deal with a good friend that
has a non-reciprocated romantic interest in you - ignore it, and hope
it goes away.  Make comments that indicate you have no interest in
them, while attempting to minimize any direct confrontation.  It's a
nasty situation to be in; you can't really say anything until the other
person directly indicates interest, and you have to be very careful if
you want to preserve the friendship.  And if nothing else, we know that
Xander values his friendship with Willow extremely highly.

As other people have speculated, perhaps we just need to have Willow
showing interest in someone else to make Xander appreciate her.  You
have to love human nature - everyone wants the unattainable.  And no
one ever really grows up when hormones are involved.  ;)

Besides, its only been 5 episodes.  We'll see how things develop over
the next year.

So here's an optimistic outlook/problem:  Like all good high school shows,
eventually (say in about three seasons) the stars will look too old.  Even
Saved By The Bell graduated. (And what an awful final episode that was.)  So
what will happen to Buffy then?  Will they all move onto college together, a la
BH90210?  Do we really want to stretch credulity like that?  (Yeah, we can
believe in vampires and their slayers, giant preying mantises, and the living
dead, but heaven forbid three friends end up at the same college, right? ;-)

I don't know.  I suppose we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get to
it.

Pardon my rambling on.

What do we do?

gym.  After all, in the movie she was a Senior.  (Also, remember Saved by
the Bell went to college and it really lost quite a bit of audience in going

That's a great question. They could do the college thing with Buffy because the center
of the story is not about a bunch of kids acting goofy, like SBTB. The stories are
handled in a mature manner already.

Where ever Buffy goes Willow or Xander will follow. But that would be too easy.
Maybe they'll go to nearby colleges or Xander will get a job cause his grades were so
bad etc.

I think it could work beyond the highschool years. As the seasons go the writing will
get more focused and the show will really shine.

Hi, all.  Just letting you know that this week's New York Times TV Guide
features a big article on Buffy and Joss Whedon, complete with pix from the
tv show and from the movie.

Disappointing news for those in love with Anthony Stewart Head: Because he
wants to keep the show on a family level, Joss Whedon specifically states
that none of the characters -- including the librarian -- are sexually
active.

I was hoping for a "Giles in Love" storyline meself.  Sigh.

Rangers Turbo.  (Don't ask why I was watching.)  They are graduating from
high school this year too.  Maybe finally we'll see the end of this
show.  I don't know.  But my point is that if a show is being picked up
year after year, then the characters in the show should grow older too.
I think it's a good move that Buffy in the series is "kicked back to 10th
grade".  That way, she has 3 years to go before facing the "college
problem".  Unless they make her repeat a grade or two...  nah.

I figure a big season-ending episode in a few years, where the Master
and the Hellmouth are destroyed, and then the three all enroll in
Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts, center of
Lovecraftian weirdness.

Of course, they could dispense with the college nonsense and just go slaying
full-time on a world wide scale with "The Order" and "The Watchers" footing
the bill, ala "Knight Rider".

Different lists, different attitudes, I guess.  For example this list
is really strict and therefore "safe" for younger members, the easily
offended and people who don't want to be 'spoiled' on episodes that
haven't yet been seen by all.

But some people are as offended by being told what's allowed/not
allowed by the listowners as others are by foul language in posts
etc.  The PlanetX list is unmoderated, and is a forum for people who
want to be a bit ... uh ... less restrained ... without getting
slapped down and/or kicked off!

The more (and more diverse) the merrier, I say - the bigger the
visible fan reaction to "Buffy" the greater its chances.  The
multiple lists usually get pruned down eventually.  Survival of the
fittest and all that!!  I'll join 'em all for as long as I can afford
to pay the bills, and for as long as they keep me entertained!
