Subject: BB: January Breakfast
Date: 04 Jan 2002 00:04:23 -0700
Just a quick announcement to remind everyone of the January Breakfast meeting on
January 12, 2002. 10:00am.
Olympian Restaurant
4908 South Redwood Road
Taylorsville, UT
801-968-7728
At the breakfast we will introduce the schedule for the year and the activities
of the club.
I apologize that we as a board were not able to find a replacement for Tom
Deaver as the Editor and as a result, there will not be January 2002 Stinger.
We are working on appointing an Editor but would appreciate your help if you are
willing to help us out. Please let someone on the board know if you are willing
to do the job of Editor. As a result of there not being a Stinger this month,
please spread the word about the breakfast.
I hope to see you all there as being around other motorcycle enthusiasts will
help me with my PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome).
Is the snow gone yet? Is the snow gone yet? Is the snow gone yet?
Andy

Subject: BB: Club Suggestion
Date: 13 Jan 2002 02:11:44
I enjoyed our breakfast meeting today. I joined the club last June and have
tried to attend every breakfast meeting. I live in Logan and at every
meeting heard that we have other club members in the Cache Valley area. I
have not met any of the Cache Valley members yet. As I understand the club
boundaries, it covers the entire state of Utah. Would there be any
interest in forming sub-groups within the club? For example the state could
have regional activity groups and rides. It would allow us to meet other
BMW riders in our local area who are not interested in traveling to SLC for
breakfasts or rides that are far from home. For my part, I love traveling
to different parts of the state (any excuse for a ride is a valid excuse for
me). In our meeting this morning we discussed recruiting new members.
Perhaps a regional approach would be appealing to those who do not live in
the SLC area.
To all of the new officers, thanks for volunteering and taking time out of
your busy lives to support the club and my favorite activity, riding BMW
motorcycles.

Reminder of the Open House this Saturday, January 26, 2002 at BMW of Salt
Lake. They offered a tire patch tech session where spots had to be reserved.
Check out their web site for further details. http://www.bmwofsaltlake.com
As discussed at the January breakfast meeting, the club will have the
opportunity to man a table and try to increase club membership. We are in need
of some volunteers to help man the table. So far we have:
Crit Swanner
David Hartwig
Andy Sager
Please let me know if you are willing to help.

Andy;
Thanks for the info RE the open house. I must take issue, however,
with the concept of manning a table to "increase membership." We
don't need any more members. In fact, since the club started chasing
the idea of larger=better we have, like lemmings rushing toward the
sea, ignored what is really happening around us. We have more
members now than at practically any other time in club history, yet
we have less involvement from the membership that at any time I can
remember. I have a lot more to say on this and plan on venting my
spleen both in person and in print, but suffice it to say for now
that we as a club have lost sight of the fact that bigger isn't
better, *better* is better.

DeVern,
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you. Without
new members bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm into
the club what shape would the club be in?? Look at
the current officer board, all but Joan have been in
the club only a few years. As you think about the
members who time and time again volunteer there time
to the club ask yourself, who is going to pick up the
ball and run with it in the coming years. Are you
running for office next year DeVern? If we followed
your policy of not needing new members then the only
members of our club would be the original core group
of people that started the club. without new members
the club will stagnate and start to decline. Active
members make a better club and that may mean new
members.
Just my opinion

Subject: BB: Bigger vs. Better?
Date: 23 Jan 2002 20:28:27 +0000
Hi folks:
Reading the email and first of all, all people have the right to express
opinions. Differing opinions spark creativity.
Secondly there is something to be said for the idea that bigger is not
always better. Better is better, I agree.
Third -- how do you get better -- I suggest it is by getting bigger,
getting more ideas; more opinions; more discussion.
I've been a member for less than a year and have seen the club from that
point of view. It is difficult to get involved with a group of
"old-timers" if I can use that phrase, and it has been at times
difficult to get involved in this club. No complaining at all, for it
just takes some time and effort to get to know some of the members of
the club and, overall, I have been welcomed most of the time.
But, I really must weigh in on the side of recruitment and opening the
doors to all (perhaps I'm just a civil-libertarian or something like
that). Old-blood, new-blood, the bottom line to me is enjoying a
motorcyle -- BMWs -- and riding with people who enjoy those machines;
people who can teach me things about the machines or show me a new road
-- or just share the road. That is why I joined -- and why I would like
to see the club grow.
Can one really have too many friends?
Can a rider really have too much help and companionship?
I don't think so.... and, remember -- if the bigger is to become
better it takes all of us to work together to bring old and new together
and form a club we all want to be members of (is that a
split-infinitive?) ... unless that is you're Groucho Marx (Never join a
club that'd have him as a member).

Fact of the matter is - you are probably both right. As a member of a
couple of local groups, and president of one, I see them all with the same
problem. I'm just happy to see people come out and participate. Let's quit
taking this thing so seriously and have fun with it. More power to the
"younger" guys or anyone who wants to get involved in making things happen.
It ain't like we're running a multi-billion dollar enterprise like ENRON or
something. Members will come and go for various reasons. I joined years
ago as a charter member, drove up to visit with John Sherfy and learned more
about BMW motorcycles in an hour than I had in a couple of years on my own,
didn't even go to a meeting for probably ten years until I retired, but have
now met some great people that I look forward to chatting with, etc. You
young fellas go with it. No drugs and sex though. Well, I guess sex would
be okay.

Thank You David, I was in the process of typing a reply when I read yours and
found no need to add anything else.
DeVern, I understand your complaint and I would say the same if the only
thing the elected club officers are trying to do is increase membership. And
since it is not, we are hopefully headed in the right direction.
The January breakfast meeting gave us a chance to introduce this years
calendar to the 47 people in attendance. It was unanimously accepted and
will be posted to the web shortly. To tickle your interest, we are planning
a lunch ride to Logan, some other club rides, tech sessions on bike to bike
communication and GPS, rides to Park City, and other rallies and campouts.
In the few years I have been a member I have asked myself why I keep paying
my dues when this club does nothing motorcycle related or give me a chance to
ride or discuss motorcycles. I feel the small steps we are taking as a board
are steps in the right direction.
We as a board welcome anyones feedback on the direction we are going as a
club and gladly accept your willingness to help.
Keep your eye on the web page and in upcoming Stingers for the club calendar and
I hope to see you all on the road.
Regards,
Andy Sager

Well, the old adage ΓÇ£opinions are like assholes, everybody have
oneΓÇ¥ is about to apply. After reading the comments about membership
I canΓÇÖt stop myself.
I bought my GS from Ted in 1997 and spent that riding season keeping
to myself. It was a great riding season for me. Then in Feb. 1998, I
attended my first club meeting and joined. Only 10 months later, at my
first annual Christmas meeting, I was elected Vice President for the
1999-riding season. In 2000, when duty called, I became the clubΓÇÖs
President. During my years in the club I have had a wonderful time
meeting and working with our members, both new and long term members.
The value of new members is clear to me (while some of you may argue
that my value to the club was questionable).
One of the things that I love about this club is that the members are
very smart and very opinionated. Those two characteristics go hand in
hand, and differing opinions definitely spark creativity.
Now I suggest that everyone go back and reread DeVernΓÇÖs note. He did
not say that we do not need new members. What he said is that he does
not support the concept of manning a table to increase membership. I
frankly have trouble understanding the need to man a membership table
at an event that surely will be attended mostly by club members in the
first place.
I know that Andy and Company have many good ideas. And it is my
experience that this club speaks its opinion readily, so Andy and his
team will get the spiritual guidance needed.
And now for my spiritual advise to the board: before you explore new
members, you need to understand the issues that have resulted in us
loosing members. If you can understand and address the issues that
drove members away, the club will be successful and a successful club
grows. DeVern is right, we have a large membership of mainly
non-involved members. Better is better and our current board is
focused on making the club better. But better clubs get bigger, that
is a fact of organizations.
Scrap the table and install a permanent, bold presentation including
the Stinger for all who come to the shop to read. Capture the new
customers who are buying BMW motorcycles like David Hartwig, people
who will make us better.

I really like Mr. Berg's introductory paragarph, and perhaps it applies
here. I also like his idea of, if Mike the owner is agreeable, to
having a permanent space in the shop for the club's calendar and
information.
One problem with this though-- it appears that the club is having
problems with the Stinger. I'm new, so I don't know anything of the
work or commitment required for offices, particularly producing the
Stinger. It was very good when I was getting it, but seems to be a lot
of work (hence the current problems?).
Going along with the idea of working with the shop, I've made a
suggestion or two to the board, and perhaps those will come to
fruition. However that depends on the shop and its space. And
remember, I don't know if the shop can give space to one club without
giving space to all clubs -- a problem for management at the shop.
As to a table at open-houses and the like, if the owner offers, we
should jump at the offer for increased visibility. I know of one person
who owns an RT who says he'll be there Saturday, and he is not a member
(though I've invited him to breakfasts and outings). When I was at the
last open house (on winterizing) is saw a number of people I've never
met -- could be they're all already members - but the woman I was
talking to for a bit was not.
Mr. Berg's sentiment about a good club growing is appropriate and
hopefully true in our case. But when I bough my bike, there was nothing
at the shop and the people I talked to didn't know the web-site. It was
only because a friend knew there was a club that I sought it out.
So, to the extent possible, Mr. Berg's suggestion should be
researched and implemented, if possible. But let's not scrap other
ideas either. Who knows, we might find next year's president (or
vice-president) through some new way of being "out there".
Being new, I have no idea of the attrition rate. If Mr. Berg is
correct and we've lost members, perhaps we can learn why. I don't know
if the club has the ability to contact old members with a quick "survey"
(or some such thing) but perhaps it would yield great benefit to us
all. I thank Mr. Berg for his point of view and would be willing to
work on the project of seeing if we can get feed-back from past members
(should the board approve such an act).
Both the table, manned by willing members, and the permanent spot
at the shop, if allowed, are good ideas. Both may get not only new
purchasers, but also those who buy used BMWs such as my friend.
Thank you all for your input and comments. After being a member for
almost a year, I think this is the most use of this bulletin board that
I've seen going to the club itself and sparking discussion.
David Hartwig.

Date: 27 Jan 2002 18:28:37 EST
Beehive Beemers... please join us!
Utah's own Gary Eagan, an Ironbutt winner (and a Beehive Beemer), is a "one
of a kind" in the motorcycle world. The Park City Motorcycle Club is proud
to have him as its guest speaker. After the 2001 Ironbutt, he has a lot of
explaining to do (sorry Gary :-) ). Come hear him! He promises to bring
his long distance outfitted, factory sponsored, Duc ST4s to the meeting. A
motorcycle evening not to be missed.
And, mark June 7th on your calandar. Dave Edwards, Executive Editor and
Chief of Cycle World will be the club's guest speaker.
Fill out the application included in this message and send it in.

hmmmm, might be handy to have one of those big Johnson's, particularly if they
have an owners group with a large ladies auxiliary that
will make sure the members have plenty of opportunity to use "their Big
Johnson" at sponsored events. you could probably even get
plenty of volunteers to be event coordinators. (skill, time events, old man's
home etc.) something to improve their proficiency using
their "Big Johnson" . what a fun group to party with. opens up a whole new
aspect in the world of motorcycling.
yes, cold winters, do, get long :)
