I beg to differ, screecher. Nationalism may have run it's course(and that is
indeed a thread for a different NG)
But a simple question of protocol - i.e. simple street-level politeness is
perfectly in place here.
A *LOT* of us play in bands, in public, and often in parades and for civic
occasions. I have played at Veteran's Day (Armistice Day) memorials for a
variety of crowds, including WW I vets - they, as well as my Grandfathers
(WW II), my Father (1950's - '60s US army), and my older brother (Desert
Storm) would feel a little, uhm, "put out" if the flag they VOLUNTEERED to
honor, and maybe die for, were treated like dishcloth. I don't know where
you are geographically, tho' you've indicated that you're a Crown Subject.
Britain may be different now, but courtesy used to be a hallmark of the
culture. What changed?
Take your extremist views somewhere else.
I agree with Robochip, and I'm no' exactly Paleskinned. Since when is a
concern for other peoples' feelings a mark of bigotry? Why fall into that
old tired "you don't agree with me, therefore you're a
bigot/communist/racist/elitist(fill in the pejorative)" trap? Is that the
best your reasoning has to offer?

Right, Paul you have seen some of the ancient pipes in the museums at
the C of P and the Piping Centre. Several of those are made of
"boxwood" which is indiginous to the area. Unfortunately, "boxwood" is
used for several species of wood, some of which are barely fit to make
apple boxes out from. Botanical names could eliminate this confusion,
but try using botanical names on the people actually cutting the trees
and see how far it gets you.

Hi All,
I've installed the new Soundblaster Live! card I bought a couple of days ago
to take advantage of the Bagpipe SoundFont supplied with Bagpipe Music
Writer Gold. Absolutely stunning results !
I've recorded a few tunes (direct from soundcard to wave file) and put them
up on my web site for anyone who's not heard the new BMW (or even those who
have but can't install the SoundFont).
I've put up the following tunes (in zip come .wav format) :-
Scotland The Brave
The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie
The Irish Rover
Setting a Course For Lewis
The Brown Haired Maiden.
(all Public Domain tunes for the snipers hanging out here)
Largest file is 1.8 mb, smallest 430k. Well worth the time for those
interested.

Intersting concept. Who needs bags? The larger compressors have wheels. We
could just tow them behind us while we play or have a larger tank, on a truck
behind the band, with tubes feeding each piper air. Like a giant hookah. The
mind boggles. How much psi?

For T-shirts, I just bumped up to the next dozen once orders approached my

Any thoughts on how many extra to order?

Since this badge has been a joint and community effort from the get-go, I
thought I would share the progress report with everyone! I sculpted for 11
hours today and must say that it is really taking shape. Lloyd, you have
been in my mind all day with K.I.S.S. theory as I tended to go into my
"more-real-than-life" mode again!!!! I should have about another 12 hours
before I do the first waste mold, then it is on to reduction molds and
detailing (more K.I.S.S. theory to practice). By the end of next week, I
should have a prototype in a medium other than metal to pass along to the
jeweler for approval. BUT . .. the word of warning here (as always from
Maeve who learns the hard way!). Having been bent over this piece all day,
I decided to stand up, stretch, and relax with a piobaireachd on my pipes.
Okay . . . NEVER. . . I repeat. . .NEVER play pipes after handling green
modeling clay all day. I have just spent the last 20 minutes digging clay
out of my chanter holes!!!!! SHEESH! Okay. I quit for the night! I'll try
to get pictures of the progress soon and put them up for everyone.

It means the organizer doesn't know how to delegate. That, plus it's dumb to
schedule back-to-back Irish fests, same place, a week apart.
If the event didn't happen this year, it probably means there's no seed $ for
next year, and like you said, what band would commit to this festival again,
now that it has a track record of bozo management?

Wouldn't work for chanter reeds, as you need some moisture.
If you have access to an environmental testing lab, you could try cycling the
reeds through a reduced Temperature & Humidity a few times...
I have heard of a compressor being used successfully for blowing-in synthetic
drone reeds, but I don't know any more about it than that.

I just purchased his kit and the one suggestion that most surprised me was
"Keep your spare reeds in the ice chest"
Now that is the first time I've heard this and I'm going to chance it,
anyone ever try this system?
And more important, what about putting them in the freezer, in case of
emergency can I thaw them in the microwave? (nuke 'em and play 'em).
Cheers,
Leslie

you don't want to freeze them as ice crystals forming in between the cane
fibres will damage the cane through expansion. Keeping reeds in the ice
chest (or cooler) provides moisture to the reed without overchilling it.

Yes I know this company very well. I doubt you will be able to do
anything legaly, the Tango Co is just one of the many Fake names that
the company has, it also is John Clifford and sons, Scottish Pipe
Company, Ireland Pipe Company, plus a few others. They prey on people
like you. I have warned people many times from ordering from Pakistan
because things like this happen all the time.
I Might have their phone number somewhere I will really have to search,
but most likely you wont get too far.

Hmmm...
Nahh,, not worth the trouble. But it would be fun to hear everyone

When I was a lad in the local pipe band we used to get our gutbuster outdoor
reeds blown in by one of the guys who was a technician in the local
distillery. He rigged up a tapping off their compressed air ring-main into a
stock, put the reeds in an old chanter and submersed the chanter in a bucket
of water to act as a silencer. 24 hours of this and the reed was ready for
human blowing in to finish it off - but it meant that the blowing in process
was shortened considerably.

At a summer school a couple of years ago one of the students pulled his pipe
chanter out after it started seriously misbehaving. There was an earwig with it's
head stuck between the lips of the chanter reed!
It was still alive and believe he actually pulled it out and let it go.
I sometimes wonder what that little earwig told his mates when he got back home?

Subject: (bagpipe) Re: Blowing in a chanter reed with a compressor
Well... I had promised myself I would never tell anyone about this.. :-) However.
There was a similar discussion about 2 years ago and I did some experimenting
with it. I don't have an air compressor but I do have a very powerful Nilfisk
vacuum cleaner. So a couple of hours brain storming and I came up with an idea. I
made a nose cone that fitted over the end of the suction hose and then, using
some blue tack (sticky stuff for affixing pictures to walls etc.) I molded a kind
of reed seat, plugged the reed in and turned on the vacuum cleaner. It seamed to
work fine. The air was being drawn onto the vac, via the read, and it made a nice
crowing sound. I could actually watch the lips vibrating.
All seamed to be going well and I was feeling quite happy with myself when
suddenly the blue tack gave way and the brand new reed and blue tack disappears
into the vac. One reed destroyed. Not to be deterred I made some modifications
and tried again... again every thing looked to be going fine so I went downstairs
to crab a cuppa, but when I came up again.....read number two had disappeared up
the hose....I tried it one more time (third time lucky)... same thing happened...
after the reed had sat there and crowed for about 10 minutes it disappeared up
the hose. That's when I finally decided to drop the idea. Actually I think it was
because I only had one reed left.
Geez...... It feels good to get that off my chest. Maybe now those nightmares
about giant vacuum cleaners chasing me around and sucking up all my reeds will
finally subside. :-)
