  29. This week in TIME Magazine, President Mikhail Gorbachev -- head of Green
  30. Cross International -- co-signed a letter with President Jimmy Carter,
  31. George Soros, Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, Harrison Ford and others to
  32. President Bush.  Saying that 'no challenge we face is more momentous than
  33. the threat of global climate change,' the leaders urge President Bush to
  34. 'develop a plan to reduce U.S. production of greenhouse gases' as 'the
  35. future of our children=97and their children=97depends on the resolve that

  76. I commend your effort to increase funding for low-income energy efficiency
  77. programs announced this week. However, if your proposed cuts to other
  78. energy
  79. efficiency programs are allowed to stand, $25 billion in annual savings to
  80. consumers will be lost and millions of tons of pollution will be added to
  81. our atmosphere.  It is in your power to avoid this serious blow to our
  82. children's health and slowing economy.

  84. I am also gravely concerned with your reversal on reducing carbon emissions
  85. in the US.  We must take our responsibility as the world's remaining super
  86. power seriously, and work to improve the Kyoto Protocol rather than
  87. opposing
  88. it.  Our nation can be more competitively economically while helping create
  89. a healthier future for our children if we address the challenge of climate

  92. Energy efficiency is the quickest, cheapest, cleanest way to help stem the
  93. adverse affects of climate change while increasing our nation's energy
  94. supply.  Research and deployment of wind, solar and geothermal energy
  95. technologies are essential to providing a reliable and affordable
  96. electricity supply over the coming decades.

  98. We must commit to energy efficiency -- including higher standards for
  99. clotheswashers, water heaters, and central air conditioners as well as our
  100. homes and buildings -- to help the American public save money in their
  101. electricity bills.  Combined with a significant commitment to renewable
  102. energy, we can help reduce demand and slow the growing impact of climate
  103. change.

  137.  
  138. I've just returned from a couple of weeks of intense travel that took me to
  139. Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Mississippi, Michigan, and Ohio.  These trips were
  140. largely done to promote our October 13 "International Day of Protest to
  141. Stop
  142. the Militarization of Space."
  143.  
  144. My stop in Pennsylvania was to the congressional district of major Star
  145. Wars
  146. promoter Rep. Kurt Weldon (Republican).  Our friends there are working hard
  147. to organize opposition to Lockheed Martin's facilities in Valley Forge, PA.
  148. and Moorestown, N.J. and plan to hold actions there on October 13.  The
  149. Brandywine Peace Community will coordinate those efforts.  Thanks to Scotty
  150. & Bill Stewart Whistler for arranging that visit.
  151.  
  152. In New Orleans I spoke at Loyola University at an event organized by Rev.
  153. Tom Warren of the United Church of Christ.  He is now coordinating efforts
  154. to hold actions at the Stennis Missile Center in Mississippi (the new test
  155. facility for the space-based laser -- a $30 billion testing program that
  156. will lead to a first flight test around 2012.)  Protests will be held there
  157. for the first time ever this coming May 13 (Mothers Day) and on October 13.
  158. Tom took me to Mississippi to check out the Stennis Center (in the
  159. southwest
  160. corner of the state) that is basically in a swamp near the Gulf coast.  We
  161. all send our best wishes to our new friends in Louisiana.
  162.  
  163. My mid-west trip was coordinated by Cleveland Peace Action and took me to
  164. Detroit in Michigan and Yellow Springs, Toledo, Columbus, Kent, Akron, and
  165. Cleveland in Ohio.
  166.  
  167. While on the trip I spoke at four college campuses (Antioch, Kent State,
  168. University of Akron, and Cleveland State University) and one high school in
  169. Columbus.
  170.  
  171. The Detroit meeting, organized by Sigrid Dale of Michigan Peace Action, had
  172. the largest turnout on the trip.  They got a full page interview with me
  173. published in the Detroit Metro News (thanks to Keith Gunter) in advance of
  174. my speaking event.  I also did a radio spot there.
  175.  
  176. While in Cleveland I also met with people to plan for a joint Global
  177. Network
  178. and Cleveland Peace Action event from October 12-14 in that city.  We will
  179. hold a major "Keep Space for Peace" conference at Cleveland State
  180. University
  181. on October 13 and organize protest vigils at the national headquarters of
  182. TRW in town on October 12 & 14.  TRW is working on the airborne laser and
  183. THEL systems for Theatre Missile Defense (TMD) and the space-based laser.
  184. NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland is also part of the development
  185. team for the nuclear rocket.

  187. Our goal is to draw people from the region to the October 13 conference in
  188. Cleveland as well as a sprinkling of others from around the country.  Even
  189. though we are strongly encouraging local actions on October 13 we feel it
  190. important to have one event as a centerpiece for the day in the U.S. so
  191. that
  192. we can "highlight" another key space facility (just as we helped to do at
  193. Vandenberg AFB in California last October 7.)  Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH)
  194. has agreed to speak at the October 13 Cleveland conference.  Some of the
  195. other speakers will include:  Karl Grossman, Joseph Gerson (AFSC), Loring
  196. Wirbel (Citizens for Peace in Space in Colorado), Patricia Mische (Antioch
  197. College professor of Peace Studies), Bruce Gagnon, and Mike McMurray (PAND
  198. in Cleveland).

  200. I will return to Ohio on September 17-24 for another speaking tour to
  201. promote the October 12-14 events and to meet again with the local
  202. organizing
  203. committee.

  205. We are now gathering co-sponsors for the Cleveland event (any donations of
  206. $25 or more are required for groups to be listed as an event co-sponsor.)

  446. Unshaken belief pulls clown-suited priest to missile silo
  447. When I grow up, I want to be like Carl Kabat.=20
  448. Oh, but I know I'll never have his guts. Or his outsized commitment to an
  449. abiding belief. Nor could I, like him, do 15 years in this nation's
  450. federal penitentiaries. And he didn't kill anyone.=20
  451. Carl Kabat, 67, is a Roman Catholic priest. He is back in Denver, the
  452. feds yet again nipping at him, trying to stuff him in prison at least one
  453. more year.=20
  454. He has held a mirror to their faces, which he has done for nearly 30
  455. years. Now, as then, they don't like it.=20
  456. This is what Rev. Kabat did: In August of last year, he donned a clown
  457. suit and scaled the fence surrounding a Minuteman III nuclear missile
  458. site about 80 miles northeast of Denver.=20
  459. There, he placed bread, wine and a hammer on top of the silo and prayed.
  460. He is charged with entering a fenced military site without permission.
  461. Trespassing. Trial is set for April 30.=20
  462. "We are fools and clowns for God and humanity's sake," Kabat says to
  463. explain the clown suit. "We bring bread and wine and a hammer as symbols
  464. of life in this damnable place of death."=20
  465. I met him quite by accident a couple of months ago. He is a man
  466. embittered not at all who, when asked of the lengthy prison sentences he
  467. has endured, merely chuckles.=20
  468. Oh, the stories he tells. His first prison stretch occurred after he
  469. participated in an anti-nuclear arms protest in Plains, Ga., shortly
  470. before Jimmy Carter was sworn in.=20
  471. In 1980 he, along with the Berrigan brothers, Philip and Daniel, and five
  472. others were arrested in Pennsylvania for hammering on nuclear missile
  473. nose cones at a General Electric plant. That cost him seven years prison
  474. time.=20
  475. He spent another seven years for damaging a missile silo in Kansas City
  476. with three others. On Good Friday 1994, he dawned a clown suit and did
  477. the same to a missile silo in North Dakota. It netted him another 4=20
  478. years.=20
  479. His graying crew cut is thinning almost to the point of nonexistence. He
  480. is missing some teeth. Laugher tumbles from his mouth as he discusses the
  481. government's attempt to silence him.=20
  482. "They've jailed -- killed -- so many of the good ones. But we are called
  483. to do things. Sometimes, it isn't always pleasant."=20
  484. Not once in our long conversation did he ever complain of his
  485. incarceration. He explains it this way: In 1965, he accepted a missionary
  486. assignment to the Philippines. It was there, he said, he saw the negative
  487. impact of U.S. foreign policy on poor nations.=20
  488. He saw children in abject poverty starve to death, while its government
  489. reaped billions of U.S. aid. In 1969, he left for a four-year missionary
  490. stint in Brazil. Again, it was the same thing. "I saw a nation with
  491. limited resources spending millions buying U.S. weapons while its people
  492. suffered."=20

  598.       federal penitentiaries. And he didn't kill anyone.=20
  599.       <P>Carl Kabat, 67, is a Roman Catholic priest. He is back in Denver, =
  600. the=20
  601.       feds yet again nipping at him, trying to stuff him in prison at least=
  602.  one=20
  603.       more year.=20
  604.       <P>He has held a mirror to their faces, which he has done for nearly =
  605. 30=20
  606.       years. Now, as then, they don't like it.=20
  607.       <P>This is what Rev. Kabat did: In August of last year, he donned a =
  608. clown=20
  609.       suit and scaled the fence surrounding a Minuteman III nuclear missile=
  610.  site=20
  611.       about 80 miles northeast of Denver.=20
  612.       <P>There, he placed bread, wine and a hammer on top of the silo and=20
  613.       prayed. He is charged with entering a fenced military site without=20
  614.       permission. Trespassing. Trial is set for April 30.=20
  615.       <P><B>"We are fools </B>and clowns for God and humanity's sake," =
  616. Kabat=20
  617.       says to explain the clown suit. "We bring bread and wine and a hammer=
  618.  as=20
  619.       symbols of life in this damnable place of death."=20
  620.       <P>I met him quite by accident a couple of months ago. He is a man=20
  621.       embittered not at all who, when asked of the lengthy prison sentences=
  622.  he=20
  623.       has endured, merely chuckles.=20
  624.       <P>Oh, the stories he tells. His first prison stretch occurred after =
  625. he=20
  626.       participated in an anti-nuclear arms protest in Plains, Ga., shortly=
  627. =20
  628.       before Jimmy Carter was sworn in.=20
  629.       <P>In 1980 he, along with the Berrigan brothers, Philip and Daniel, =
  630. and=20
  631.       five others were arrested in Pennsylvania for hammering on nuclear =
  632. missile=20
  633.       nose cones at a General Electric plant. That cost him seven years =
  634. prison=20
  635.       time.=20
  636.       <P>He spent another seven years for damaging a missile silo in Kansas=
  637.  City=20
  638.       with three others. On Good Friday 1994, he dawned a clown suit and =
  639. did the=20
  640.       same to a missile silo in North Dakota. It netted him another 4=20
  641.       <P>years.=20
  642.       <P>His graying crew cut is thinning almost to the point of =
  643. nonexistence.=20
  644.       He is missing some teeth. Laugher tumbles from his mouth as he =
  645. discusses=20
  646.       the government's attempt to silence him.=20
  647.       <P>"They've jailed -- killed -- so many of the good ones. But we are=
  648. =20
  649.       called to do things. Sometimes, it isn't always pleasant."=20
  650.       <P>Not once in our long conversation did he ever complain of his=20
  651.       incarceration. He explains it this way: In 1965, he accepted a =
  652. missionary=20
  653.       assignment to the Philippines. It was there, he said, he saw the =
  654. negative=20
  655.       impact of U.S. foreign policy on poor nations.=20
  656.       <P><B>He saw children </B>in abject poverty starve to death, while =
  657. its=20
  658.       government reaped billions of U.S. aid. In 1969, he left for a four-=
  659. year=20
  660.       missionary stint in Brazil. Again, it was the same thing. "I saw a =
  661. nation=20
  662.       with limited resources spending millions buying U.S. weapons while =
