Subject: Re: (abolition-usa) Fwd: Ashcroft Filibuster Gains Ground - Call Your SenatorsToday!!
I am disturbed that the abolition-usa e-mail list is being used to
promote
partisan political positions and, in particular, to promote the
pro-choice agenda.
Pax Christi USA, which I represent in the nuclear abolition movement,
takes no
position on the election or selection of particular political
candidates, so I won't
comment on the Ashcroft appointment here.
Let me remind you that the nuclear abolition movement includes a whole
sub-network called the Seamless Garment Network, composed of many
organizations and individuals of different religious traditions and some
with no religious tradition. Pax Christi is a member of that network,
which supports a consistent ethic of life that opposes war, preparations
for war, capital punishment,
abortion, and other evils that threaten human life. When you promulgate
your pro-choice
views on the abortion-usa list, you offend pro-life progressives like me
and my friends.
More importantly, if our common cause of nuclear abolition is to
succeed, I submit that
we need to avoid divisive actions. We need to be welcoming to people who
disagree with us
on other issues. That means accepting and not offending both pro-choice
and pro-life people;
Democrats, Republicans, Greens; liberals, conservatives, and
progressives; gays and straights;
and folks of different religions or no religion. In short, all of
humanity is threatened by
weapons of mass destruction and need to rally together to abolish those
weapons.
Respectfully,
Frank Dworak
Pax Christi USA Representative

MEDIA RELEASE
20 January 2001
Stop Plutonium shipments, strengthen the Conventions - PCRC
The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre (PCRC) has called on Pacific
governments to take concrete actions to halt the continued plutonium
shipments through the Pacific from France to Japan. PCRC Director
Motarilavoa Hilda Lini said Pacific countries must strenghten the Raratonga
Treaty for a South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone and the Waigani Convention on
Hazardous and Radioactive Wastes so that the Pacific is not exploited as a
highway for 'death shipments' of plutonium.
The Centre said the shipments posed grave danger to the Pacific environment
and socio-economic life and were of no benefit at all to Pacific peoples.
"It is urgent that efforts to strengthen the two conventions must begin now
to avoid us being exposed to these needless dangers," she stated.
Two vessels the 'Pacific Teal' and 'Pacific Pintail' have left Cherbourg,
France for Japan with weapons-usable and hazardous Plutonium/Mixed Oxide
(MOX) fuel. Whichever route the ships take, they will pass through the
Pacific.
Ms Lini said: "Pacific leaders over the years have expressed concern about
the dangers of plutonium shipments through the Pacific Ocean to Japan.
However we are concerned that our governments position could be compromised
by accepting Japan's offer to establish a $US10 million "good will" trust
fund to placate concerns about the plutonium shipments threats to Pacific
fisheries, tourism and other vital industries. $US10 million is peanuts. It
will not cover a tiny fraction of costs incurred by a nuclear accident at
sea."
"The damages caused to the environment and other industries would be
irreparable," Ms Lini said.
She further stated: "Japan and the nuclear companies are not addressing the
real issue, which is that the Pacific people do not want plutonium shipments
passing through, and that plutonium shipments should be banned. The
international nuclear industry is in trouble. They have not found a solution
for the long-term storage of plutonium and high level radioactive wastes
which lasts for thousands of years (though many nuclear corporations are
still pushing to use the vast "empty" spaces of the Pacific as a dumping
ground for nuclear wastes)."

Request for Messages to the 26th Anniversary Meeting of the Nuclear-free Kobe
Formula
Jan. 21, 2001
Dear Friends,
We have a new millennium and the start of the 21st century. At the
beginning of this new century, we mark the 26th anniversary of the nuclear-free
Kobe Formula. On the 18th of March this year, we will be holding a meeting to
celebrate the anniversary and we look forward to receiving messages of support,
solidarity and encouragement.
As many of you know, the Port of Kobe insists that any warship entering
the port to submit "non-nuclear certification" that there are no nuclear
weapons on board. This procedure, the nuclear-free "Kobe Formula", has been
enforced by the Kobe City local government for the past 26 years. In Japan,
only local municipalities have authority over their ports and harbors. The Kobe
Formula has been very successful in preventing the entry of nuclear weapons
into the port. US warships have been refused entry for the past 26 years
because they refuse to submit the non-nuclear certification because of their
policy not to confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons on their ships.
Before the Kobe Formula, 432 US warships entered the port between 1960 and
1974.
The Japanese Government has accepted the new "Guidelines for Japan-US
Defense Cooperation" and is making plans to enforce them. Under these
guidelines, if the US is involved in any war in the Asia-Pacific region, all
ports and harbors in Japan will be used predominantly for military purposes.
Concern of the spread of the Kobe Formula to other ports and harbors in Japan
has resulted in the Japanese and US governments putting pressure on local
government. Recent remarks by the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, the U.S.
Consul General in Osaka, the US Navy chief and the US Navy commander of the 7th
Fleet, have clearly shown that they are determined to force Kobe to abandon the
nuclear-free Kobe Formula. They repeatedly state that U.S. warships be allowed
to enter the port. This is against world opinion seeking peace and nuclear
disarmament, and an attack on the NGO's Millennium Forum, which decided in the
United Nations in May last year to call on all states to accept the same method
as the Kobe Formula.
We are fighting to keep the Kobe Formula. We are fighting to extend it
to all ports in Japan. We are fighting for a nuclear-free and non-aligned
Japan. We have received messages of support and encouragement for many years
from every corner of the globe, which has been a great source of energy for us.
Please send messages of solidarity and encouragement for the success of
this year's meeting to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the Kobe Formula.
Please ask individuals and organizations to do the same. Messages from elected
officials from local state, government and local government are most welcome.
Please send messages before the end of February, 2001.
Let us work together in the beginning of this new century to achieve a
nuclear-free world.
With our deep respect and solidarity to your every effort for peace,
Shushi Kajimoto

Dear Qari Mangal,
What a terrible experience! I don't know what I can do to help you, but I will
seek advice here in Washington DC about how you might apply for a visa. Is it
possible for you to give dates and people involved in your tragedy, and a
resume of your work experience?

Subject: Re: (abolition-usa) Fwd: Ashcroft Filibuster Gains Ground - Call Your SenatorsTo
Dear Friends,
I don't think that abolition usa is being used to promote a partisan political
position or to promote a pro-choice agenda. While some may approve of
Ashcroft's position on choice, those in our network surely don't approve of
his
attitudes to civil liberties as it effects gays, and blacks; gun control;,
etc.
Our network made it clear that nuclear abolition should be linked to social
justice and equity. Ashcroft voted for every Star Wars bill and opposed the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. He is the awful nominee of an illegitimate
President who stole the election with the help of a biased unethical Supreme
Court--Thomas' wife was at the Heritage Foundation reviewing resumes for the
new Bush Administration and Scalia's son was an attorney at a law firm which
represented Bush in Bush v. Gore. They should have recused themselves from
the
Court. Defeating the Ashcroft nomination would send a signal to Bush that he
doesn't have a mandate for any of his programs including his provocative
son of
star wars which will trash all hopes for nuclear abolition. Ashcroft's stand
on abortion is only one issue--on which reasonable people might disagree. But
the Ashcroft package of despicable positions on civil rights enables our
abolition network to make links with the many outraged voters who object to
the
fraudulent election and the extreme objectionable positions he has taken on
many issues. Alice slater
