2) Activist Announcements
- - Vieques water-only fast entering its third week
On July 25, 00 Andr=E9s Thomas-Conteris began a juice fast in support of the
people of Vieques, Puerto Rico. See
http://prop1.org/protests/pr/000725.andres.htm. When bombing resumed on=
August
14th, Andres began a water-only fast. He is asking that President Clinton=
meet
with the leaders of Vieques for one hour. This is not an unreasonable
request. Andres is a treasure to the activist community and deserves a bit=
of
your time. Please bombard the White House (phone 202-456-1111-0, email
mailto:president@whitehouse.gov, mailto:vice-president@whitehouse.gov).
You can
email Andres at Charitable Choices <mailto:andres@charitablechoices.org> =20
"I am a part of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, a faith-based
organization that seeks to resolve conflicts nonviolently. The FOR has=
worked
for many years on the demilitarization of Puerto Rico through the Task Force=
on
Latin America and the Caribbean. I am also a lay missioner with the United
Methodist Church whose leadership in Puerto Rico has taken a strong position
against the bombing in Vieques. I have decided to enter into an open-ended,
liquid-only fast (juices with calories) appealing to your conscience so that
you grant the long-requested meeting. This fast will become a liquid-only,
no-calorie (water with some non-caloric salts, electrolytes, vitamins,
minerals, etc.) if the Navy resumes the massive bombing exercises. This=
type
of fast will continue indefinitely until you grant the meeting with the
religious and peace movement leaders of Vieques.
"Our witness is called Fast for Justice and Peace in Vieques, Puerto
Rico: An Appeal to the Conscience of President Clinton to Meet with the
Leaders of Vieques. We will hold a press conference in Lafayette park at 12
noon today and a prayer vigil and peace witness every evening from 5:00pm to
8:00pm.
"Mohandas K. Gandhi called fasting the 'prayer of a soul in
anguish.' It
is the final stage along the path of an ever intensifying nonviolent=
witness.
Indeed, those of us moved to fast are in deep anguish over the death of=
David
Sanes on April 19, 1999 during a Navy bombing exercise. We are alarmed at=
the
escalating cancer rates and other deleterious health effects on Vieques=
because
of the bombing, and the rising repression by police, military and judicial
authorities against peace activists on that tiny island. We are anguished=
over
the threat that the bombs will continue to fall and we are filled with hope
knowing that when we act together we can bring change." [July 25, 2000,=

Thomas-Conteris]
- - ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS HOLD NATIONAL LISTENING SESSIONS -=
starting
in Jackson, Mississippi, August 29, 2000 - A coalition of business,=
industry,
health, academic and environmental professionals plans to hold the first in=
a
series of public meetings next Tuesday (August 29th) to discuss=
environmental
justice issues around the country. Environmental justice activists draw
attention to the disproportionate number of hazardous wastes, contaminated
manufacturing sites and polluting industries placed in poor, non-White
communities. The National Environmental Policy Commission will hold its=
first
Listening Session on Tuesday, August 29 in Jackson, Mississippi. The
Commission was an outgrowth of recommendations from the Congressional Black=
=20
Caucus under the leadership of Congressman James Clyburn, a South Carolina
Democrat. The purpose of the Commission is to identify environmental issues
and policy alternatives. The Commission will deliberate and report on
appropriate roles for human health, environmental protection, =
environmental
justice and economic development considerations in a comprehensive
environmental policy. The Medical University of South Carolina=B9s=
Environmental
Biosciences Program (EBP) and The National Association for Equal Opportunity=
in
Higher Education (NAFEO) will provide leadership in coordinating Commission
activities. "We must work together to ensure participation from all
stakeholders in order to develop a comprehensive environmental policy,"
explained David Rivers of EBP. The Commission will conduct a series of
Listening Sessions throughout the country over the next year to obtain=
greater
insight into national environmental policy. More information is available=

Ashland County, Wisc. drops charge against disarmers of Navy antenna
ASHLAND, WI, August 28-In a precedent-setting move, Ashland County
District Attorney Michael Gableman has chosen not to prosecute peace=
activists
who downed wooden poles supporting the antenna lines for the U.S. Navy's
Project ELF transmitter, located near Clam Lake, WI. In a letter dated=
August
28, 2000, Gableman informed Ashland County Circuit Court Judge Robert Eaton
that he will not pursue the charge of intentional damage to property=
originally
brought against Bonnie Urfer, 48, and Michael Sprong, 37, both of Luck, WI.
Judge Eaton read into the record an August 28 letter from the U.S.
Attorney's office in Madison, WI that said in part, "Barring something
unforeseen, we intend to initiate federal prosecution in this matter....."=
