Subject: (abolition-usa) on-line poll for presidential debates
July 31, 2000
Dear Friend of Project Abolition:
The Commission on Presidential Debates is conducting a Harris on-line
poll
to help determine the topics addressed at the debates. This is an
excellent
opportunity to help put nuclear weapons on the national screen via
cyber-organizing.
The poll is at www.debates.org.
Please note: mid-way through the poll you will be asked to pick 3 (out
of
six) broad topics that are most important to you. You will only be
allowed
to comment in-depth on those three topics, so be sure to pick Foreign
Policy
and Defense if you want to register your opinion on nuclear weapons
elimination.
There is no option immediately given for nuclear weapons, but if you
select
"Other" within the Foreign Policy and Defense list, you'll be allowed to
write-in. Missile defense is listed as a topic.
The "What question would you ask if you were moderator?" section is also
a
good spot to bring up nuclear issues.
There does not appear to be any limit as to the number of times you can
take
the survey.
For your convenience and reference, a list of possible nuclear "comment
points" follows for the write-in section. Feel free to call the Global
Security Institute (415 561 6686) or Project Abolition (219 535 1110)
for
elaboration on any of these points.

- --------------
Pax and facts -- samples for you to use and adapt:
1. U.S. obligation under the Non-Proliferation Treaty obligation,
reaffirmed
this May, to the "unequivocal undertaking" of nuclear weapon
elimination.
2. The Cold War level of weapon readiness (hair-trigger), targeting
(thousands in Russia alone), and the danger of accidental launch.
3. Continued existence of nuclear weapons, especially with deteriorating
command-and-control in Russia, makes nuclear terrorism an increasing
likelihood.
4. At any given point in the past ten years, in any given country on
earth,
well over half the population has supported nuclear weapon abolition.
5. Aggregate nuclear weapon spending in the United States alone is $35
billion annually, or $1000 every second.
6. Some of our most powerful and loyal allies--Ireland, Brazil, Sweden,
New
Zealand, Mexico, South Africa, and Egypt--have formed a New Agenda
Coalition
to urge international disarmament.
7. A major overhaul in U.S. leadership is needed to recover from the
disastrous Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty rejection in the U.S. Senate
last
October.
8. The current debate over National Missile Defense misses the point:
the
only true security from nuclear ballistic missiles is the elimination of
nuclear weapons. In the meantime, our government is pandering to
defense
industry lobbyists and soundbite populism in its willingness to
construct a
missile defense that doesn't work, costs AT LEAST $60 billion, and
antagonizes our allies and enemies alike.
9. The use of nuclear weapons, or threat thereof, is anathema to every
religious, moral, and legal norm on the planet. They are unworthy of
the
United States or any nation.
ALL OF THIS MEANS FOR THE NEW PRESIDENT: The United States should take a
leadership role in the multilateral, transparent, verifiable, and
irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide.

Subject: (abolition-usa) Global Green and clean energy
Dear STARS,
Below is some exciting news about Gorbachev's organization, Global Green, and
clean energy in California. I omitted the part about the excellent work they
are doing to rid the world of chemical weapons without incinerating them into
the air. If you'd like the full newsletter, let me know. Alice
Here is our first e-mail newsletter. We hope you find the information
useful. We will be updating this newsletter quarterly and we talk
about all of GG USA'S programs.
GREEN POWER CAMPAIGN
OAKLAND SWITCHES ON THE GREEN
On June 20, the Oakland City Council voted to switch to 100% green
power. Other local governments currently purchasing green power
include Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Chula Vista, and Palmdale.
However, this environmental decision puts Oakland on top and makes it
the largest city in the world buying renewable energy.
Mayor Jerry Brown was quoted in the Local Government Commission's
Currents magazine as saying, 'In a deregulated world, local
governments should be showing some initiative. I want to make sure
that Oakland is assuming its responsibilities when it comes to the
environment and taking advantage of new and cleaner energy
technologies.'
GG USA agrees with Mayor Brown, and as the Green Power Campaign enters
a new phase, there will be an increased focus on switching local
governments throughout California in order to create a broad impact on
the renewable energy market.
For more information on green power please visit our website at
www.gogreenpower.org.
EARTHDAY 2000 PROMOTES THE GREEN POWER MESSAGE - 'CLEAN ENERGY NOW!'
This year marked the 30th Anniversary of Earth Day, and on April 22,
fairs in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco
brought together individuals throughout California to celebrate the
planet. Global Green USA participated in Earth Day San Diego, Los
Angeles, and Santa Barbara and used this outreach opportunity to
educate the public about renewable energy options. Our star
performers and educators were the 'Greenewables,' a troupe of actors
who became Sammy Solar, Gia Geothermal, Willow Wind, Betty Sue
Biomass, and the Coal Curmudgeon for the day in Los Angeles.
As an organization, GG USA understands that public outreach is
essential to our mission, and events like Earth Day give us a great
opportunity to educate the public regarding important environmental
actions like switching to green power.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to take part in
some other creative outreach activities. If you are interested in
helping, please call Scott Bunn or Denise Lofman at 310-394-7700.
GREEN BUILDING PROGRAM
MORE CITIES PARTNER WITH GLOBAL GREEN
A growing number of cities across California are drawing on GG USA's
expertise in energy policy, design and construction, municipal
organization and process, training, and public outreach to tackle
green building, energy efficiency, and green power projects. Current
partners include the City of Santa Monica, City of Los Angeles, City
of Santa Clarita, and the Alameda County Waste Management Authority.
Projects include preparing Green Building Guidelines for use in
Alameda County's 14 cities, leading green building trainings for Santa
Monica staff, and working with Santa Clarita staff to identify energy
and green building priorities.
US GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL PREPARING RESIDENTIAL RATING SYSTEM
When USGBC decided to start the process of developing a residential
version of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
green building rating system, Global Green USA decided it was time to
increase its already significant involvement in USGBC. Both Lynn N.
Simon, AIA and Walker Wells, AICP are members of the six-member LEED-
Residential steering committee overseeing development of LEED-
Residential. Through an active role in the LEED-Residential
development process, GG USA hopes to its Greening Affordable Housing
Initiative (GAHI) bring the concepts and approaches to the rating
system, with the goal of creating homes that are both green and
affordable to own and operate.
GREENING AFFORDABLE HOUSING CATCHES ON
Developers, architects, and government agency housing staff are
increasingly turning their attention to the added value that green
building brings to affordable housing projects. Los Angeles housing
leaders recently invited Global Green to serve on the City of Los
Angeles Blue Ribbon Affordable Housing Crisis Task Force. As the only
environmental organization on the Task Force, GG USA was able to
convey the environmental, financial, and health-related benefits of
green building to the Task Force membership and, through the final
report, to the City Council. Other current efforts include a
collaboration with the City of Santa Monica Housing Division and local
housing stakeholders to develop green criteria for City's Housing
Trust Fund, and advising the Long Beach Habitat for Humanity Chapter
as they more toward the December construction of HFH's first green
neighborhood.
NOW AVAILABLE -- BLUEPRINT FOR GREENING AFFORDABLE HOUSING
After three years of research, writing, production, and fund-raising,
this information-packed document outlines the applicability of a wide
range of green building practices to affordable housing. The
Blueprint also provides ten case studies of green affordable housing
projects from around the country. Workshops related to the Blueprint
and GG USA's Greening Affordable Housing Initiative are planned for
Indianapolis and Los Angeles in the fall. For more information on the
Blueprint or to purchase a copy, see the publications section of our
web site www.globalgreen.org. For information on partnering with GG
USA to conduct a Greening Affordable Housing workshop, please call
either Walker Wells at (310) 394-7700 or Lynn Simon at (415) 437-1425.

<h2>Catholic group protests nuclear weapons at Yorktown base</h2>
<font face=3D"arial, helvetica" size=3D2>
<b>By MARK JENNINGS</b>
<br>© 2000, =
The Virginian-Pilot
</font><p>
<b>YORKTOWN - </b> About 100 protesters, led by Catholic Bishop Walter F.=
Sullivan, linked hands and blocked the main entrances to the Yorktown Na=
val Weapons Station for about an hour Monday to protest the storage of nu=
clear weapons there.<p> The demonstrators, members of Pax Christi, a Ca=
tholic peace organization, contend that more than 160 W-80 nuclear warhea=
ds, which attach to Tomahawk cruise missiles, are stored at the base.<p> =
Yorktown Naval Station officials would not confirm or deny the group's =
claims.<p> Sullivan, who is president of Pax Christi and bishop of the =
Richmond diocese, said it is important to promote peace.<p> ``We are her=
e to witness that we are against nuclear weapons,'' he said before the p=
rotest. ``In the person of Jesus Christ, we see love and peace. And we ha=
ve never achieved peace through weapons and war.''<p> The protest offic=
ially ended Pax Christi's annual national assembly, which was held in Ash=
land last weekend. The group seeks to address the death penalty and the c=
ancellation of impoverished nations' debts to the United States, among ot=
her issues. It rejects war, preparations for war and every form of violen=
ce and domination.<p> Pax Christi members sought permission to enter t=
he naval base and search for nuclear weapons but were denied access. Then=
they linked hands and formed a human shield across the driveways of the =
two main entrances of the naval base.<p> Some of the protesters wielded=
signs with phrases such as ``Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Never Again.'' Others =
sang spirituals about freedom.<p> John Burroughs, executive director of=
the New York-based Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy, attended the ra=
lly. He said warheads at the base have 12 times the explosive power of th=
e atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. <p> Armed naval officers dre=
ssed in green fatigues and black boots responded to the protest by closin=
g the gates to outgoing and incoming traffic.<p> Retired Navy man Don O=
rband, 73, was one of those stranded at the gate. He had driven to Gate 2=
to pick up medicine, but was halted by the protest.<p> Orband said he =
doesn't believe in nuclear weapons either, but he thinks the demonstrator=
s should try to disarm the rest of the world before attacking the nuclear=
defenses of the United States.<p> ``They seem like loving people, but =
their ideas are way off,'' Orband said. ``They need to be in other countr=
ies trying to get nuclear weapons out of there.''<p> One of the people =
standing between Orband and his medicine was Patrice Schwermer, a member =
of the church Orband attends in Norfolk.<p> Schwermer, justice and peac=
e social minister at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, said she joined the pr=
otest to show that nuclear weapons violate the law of God.<p> ``I under=
stand that he was just trying to get medicine,'' Schwermer said. ``But I =
also understand what the things behind these gates stand for. And that's =
violence and destruction.''<p> Justin Christin, 18, who lives near the =
main entrance of the weapons station, said he thought the protesters were=
doing a noble deed. <p> ``I think they are trying to make a better wor=
ld,'' he said. ``I think they should get rid of all weapons, so I can fee=
l what they are trying to do.''<p> The rally ended peacefully at noon, =
with the protesters tying ribbons to the gates and then celebrating with =
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, dancing and singing at Charles Brown =
Park near the base. <p> Catherine N. Anekwe, 67, a member of Pax Christ=
i in Brooklyn, N.Y., hailed the protest as a success.<p> ``I think our =
message probably went to them,'' she said. ``I hope that they eventually =
come to grips with the fact that they should take all those things and di=
sarm them.''<p> =
