  27. This message is for users of the NOAA/SEC Space
  28. Weather Operations sunspot region numbers. As you
  29. may have noticed, we are steadily approaching
  30. region number 10000. The plan for Space Weather
  31. operations is to go through the sequence of Region
  32. numbers as 9998, 9999, 0000, 0001, and so on. SEC's
  33. product text discussions of the active regions
  34. will ignore the leading zeroes (for example, we
  35. will say 'Region number 5' rather than Region
  36. number '0005'). However, the Geoalert product, the
  37. Region Report product, as well as the USAF and IUWDS
  38. data exchange codes will preserve the 4 digit format.
  39. The necessity of using four digits is for operational
  40. purposes only. For historical purposes all regions
  41. beyond Region 9999 will be understood to be in a
  42. series of region numbers 10000 and higher.
