  21. (1) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  23.   Linux capable computer, PowerPC processor
  24.   Linux kernel version 2.2.x
  25.   32 MB RAM
  26.   4x CD-ROM drive
  27.   Video card capable of 800x600 resolution
  28.   XFree86 version 3.2 or newer at 8 or 16 bpp.
  29.   /dev/dsp sound device for audio
  30.     (the Enlightenment Sound Daemon is supported as well).
  31.   30 MB free hard disk space, 200 MB recommended

  38. Mount the Planetary Pack CD and run the install archive script:

  40. e.g.  Log in as root:
  41.     mount /mnt/cdrom
  42.     sh smac-install-ppc.run

  44. If you haven't already installed the Loki Update Tool or Loki Uninstall
  45. Tool, the installer will prompt you to install these before installing
  46. the main product.

  50. (3) PLAYING THE GAME
  51. --------------------

  53.     A quick introduction to playing the game is included in QuickStart.txt
  54.  
  55.     The manuals for both games are available in PDF format in the files
  56.     "Alpha_Centauri_Manual.pdf" and "Alien_Crossfire_Manual.pdf"
  57.     in the installation directory.  The best viewer for this is the Adobe
  58.     Acrobat reader, available at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/
  59.  
  60.     Run 'smacpack' to start the game.
  61.  
  62.     The first time you run the game it will create a .loki/smac
  63.     directory in your home directory.  Saved games, temporary files,
  64.     and preferences will be stored here.

  66.     The following arguments may be given to Alpha Centauri:

  68.         [-h | --help]       Display this help message
  69.         [-v | --version]    Display the game version
  70.         [-f | --fullscreen] Run the game fullscreen
  71.         [-w | --windowed]   Run the game in a window
  72.         [-s | --nosound]    Do not access the soundcard
  73.         [-c | --nocdrom]    Do not access the CD-ROM
  74.  
  75.     Use Alt-Enter to toggle fullscreen mode.
  76.  
  77.     Use Ctrl-G to toggle mouse grabbing.
  78.  
  79.     Use Ctrl-Z to iconify the game when it is run in a window.

  81.     The Print Screen key will save the current screen to the ~/.loki/smac
  82.     directory.

  84.     If the Print Screen, Pause, or Alt-# keys are not working,
  85.     make sure your window manager is not overriding them.

  100. (4) USING THE EDITOR

  103.    * Activate the editor either through the menus or by pressing Ctrl-K.
  104.  
  105.    * Click on the 'T' button at the bottom center of the screen to bring
  106.      up the terrain palette.  Click on an icon in the terrain palette to 
  107.      select that terrain object
  108.  
  109.    * Hold down the control key and click the left mouse button to place
  110.      a terrain object.  Hold down the control key and click the right
  111.      mouse button to remove that terrain object.
  112.  
  113.    * Hold down the shift key while left clicking and dragging the mouse
  114.      over the map to "paint" with a terrain object.  Hold down the shift
  115.      key while right clicking and dragging the mouse over the map to
  116.      "erase" that terrain object.

  118.    * Deactivate the editor by pressing Ctrl-K and save your map/scenario.

  122. (5) TROUBLESHOOTING

  124. The following are some of the more common problems you might have, and
  125. recommended solutions:
  126.  
  127. A) There is no game sound.
  128.  
  129.    First, check all your connections between your speakers and your 
  130.    computer.  Make sure your speakers are turned on and receiving power.  
  131.    Make sure the volume is not turned down all the way.  You can change
  132.    sound and music volume in the 'Game Options' window.
  133.    If none of the above suggestions works, try producing sound in another 
  134.    program.  If that does not work, make sure you have the sound driver
  135.    enabled in your kernel.  Finally, go to http://www.opensound.com/
  136.    to see whether a commercial driver is available for your sound card.
