  18. Version 0.8.1 of the slrn newsreader is now available from space.mit.edu in
  19. pub/davis/slrn. In addition, it is also available (or soon will be) from the
  20. European mirror site ftp.uni-stuttgart.de:/pub/unix/misc/slang.

  22. slrn is a powerful but very friendly NNTP based newsreader for Unix and VMS
  23. that boasts the following features:
  24.  
  25.   * True referenced-based threading
  26.   * Score (Kill) file support with scores that can be set to expire
  27.   * Built-in MIME support
  28.   * Draws a colored thread tree using line drawing characters
  29.   * Multiple server support
  30.   * Multiple windows
  31.      - Header summary window showing threads
  32.      - Article window
  33.   * Customizable 
  34.      - Keybindings
  35.      - Colors
  36.          For example, the default colors, say, using a color xterm such as
  37.      rxvt, shows the top status bar in blue on white, the author's name
  38.      in the header summary window as magenta on white, the thread tree
  39.      as red lines connecting subject titles, the window status lines
  40.      appear as yellow on blue, the article headers in the article window
  41.      are cyan on white, the quoted text appears as red on white, and
  42.      the body of the article appears as blue on white.
  43.      - Server -> newsrc mappings
  44.   * Smart screen updating
  45.   * Online help which is also customizable
  46.   * Automatic reconnect if server drops connection
  47.   * Fast on slow modem connections.  It does not have to read the whole
  48.      active file like many other newsreaders.

  53. The current version does not yet provide support for a local news spool.
  54. However, this is being worked on.

  56. Here is a list of changes since 0.8.0:

  58. 0.  Updated FAQ with a complete discussion of uudecoding articles
  59. 1.  The `toggle_sort' function bound to `ESC s' in article mode has been
  60.     modifed.  Now, it prompts for the sorting method.
  61. 2.  New variables for the .slrnrc file:
  62.  
  63.       % If 0, do not sort.  If 1, perform threading.  If 2, sort by subject
  64.       % If 3, thread then sort result by subject
  65.       set sorting_method 3
  66.  
  67.       % If non-zero, threads will be uncollapsed when a group is entered
  68.       set uncollapse_threads 0
  69.       
  70.     Note: methods 2 and 3 were not available in previous versions of slrn.
  71.     This is why the `toggle_sort' function needed to be modified.
  72. 3.  It is now possible to have all posted articles saved in a file.  The
  73.     file is specified in the .slrnrc with a line like:

  75.         set save_posts "News/My_Posts"
  76.  
  77. 4.  slrn now generates its own message id provided that it can find the
  78.     machines fully qualified domain name (FQDN).  The reason for this is
  79.     that one can easily more efficiently score follow-ups to the user's
  80.     posted articles.  For example, if the FQDN is `machine.my.domain' and
  81.     the user's name is `user' then simply put:
  82.     
  83.        [*]
  84.        Score: 100      (or whatever)
  85.        References: user@machine.my.domain>
  86.        
  87.     in the score file.  (The first part of the generated message-id is
  88.     composed of a base 32 representation of the current time and process-id).
  89. 5.  Default values available at all yes/no prompts.
  90.  
  91. 6.  Saving an article is slightly different but simpler.  The new bindings
  92.     are: 
  93.     
  94.     `:'  uudecode file
  95.         `o'  save a file-- no decoding
  96.     
  97.     Use "decode" and "save_article" to re-bind these.
  98.     See the FAQ for more detailed help on uudecoding articles.
  99.     
  100. 7.  New variable: 'save_directory' may be used to specify where files are
  101.     saved.  The default is 'News'.  Use something in your .slrnrc file:
  102.     
  103.         set save_directory "News"
  104.     
  105. 8.  There is now an option for slrn to read the active file upon startup.
  106.     Using this option may result in faster startup times.  Using the active
  107.     file also has the advantage that the `L' key will list all groups
  108.     available at the server.

  110.     There are two ways of enabling this option:
  111.     
  112.         a.  Startup slrn with the -a switch:  slrn -a
  113.     b.  Add the line:
  114.       
  115.              set read_active 1
  116.        
  117.         to your .slrnrc file.

  119. 9.  The `Expires' date may be given in one of the following formats:

  121.        MM/DD/YYYY
  122.        DD-MM-YYYY
  123.        
  124.     Previous versions only allowed the first format.

  127.     To enable MIME support, add:

  138.     The MIME code is still in the testing phase but it appears to be ok.
