Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from your heart. The largest are those leaving the hea rt: they are as wide as garden hose and very elastic (able to withstand the rush of blood from each heartbeat). They branch into smaller, more muscular, and less elastic arteri ies, which deliver blood to the body. The smallest are the arterioles, which control blood flow in the body tissues.
