altar
An altar is a special table in a place where you praise God. Long ago, people offered gifts to God on an
altar.
ashamed
If you feel ashamed, you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about something you have done.
Babylon
The city of Babylon was the center of a huge empire. When Daniel was alive, the Babylonians ruled
over Israel and Judah, the lands where the Israelites lived.
famine
A famine is a time when food crops will not grow and people do not get enough to eat.
flood
A flood is a huge amount of water covering land that is usually dry.
forbidden
If something is forbidden, it is not allowed.
harvest
Harvest is the time when all the ripe crops are gathered in from the fields.
Israelites
Israelite people were descended from Abraham and were also called Hebrews or Jews. They worshiped
God, who promised them that they would have a land of their own.
law
A law is a rule that has been decided by God, by a government, or by a ruler.
merchant
A merchant is a person who buys and sells things.
nation
A nation is a group of people who share the same history, language, and way of life and who usually
live in the same country.
pharaoh
Long ago, the king of Egypt was called the pharaoh.
politician
A politician is someone who is involved in the running of a country.
prime minister
As Prime Minister, Daniel was chief advisor to King Darius. Nowadays, a prime minister is someone in
charge of running a country.
slaves
Slaves were servants who were not paid any wages. They belonged to their masters and could be bought
and sold like a car or a house.
