  4. An altar is a special table in a place where you praise God. Long ago, people offered gifts to God on an 
  5. altar.

  8. If you feel ashamed, you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about something you have done.
  9.  
  10. Babylon
  11. The city of Babylon was the center of a huge empire. When Daniel was alive, the Babylonians ruled 
  12. over Israel and Judah, the lands where the Israelites lived.
  13.  
  14. famine
  15. A famine is a time when food crops will not grow and people do not get enough to eat.
  16.  
  17. flood
  18. A flood is a huge amount of water covering land that is usually dry.
  19.  
  20. forbidden
  21. If something is forbidden, it is not allowed.
  22.  
  23. harvest
  24. Harvest is the time when all the ripe crops are gathered in from the fields.
  25.  
  26. Israelites
  27. Israelite people were descended from Abraham and were also called Hebrews or Jews. They worshiped 
  28. God, who promised them that they would have a land of their own.

  30. law
  31. A law is a rule that has been decided by God, by a government, or by a ruler.

  33. merchant
  34. A merchant is a person who buys and sells things.
  35.  
  36. nation
  37. A nation is a group of people who share the same history, language, and way of life and who usually 
  38. live in the same country.

  40. pharaoh
  41. Long ago, the king of Egypt was called the pharaoh.

  43. politician
  44. A politician is someone who is involved in the running of a country.
  45.  
  46. prime minister
  47. As Prime Minister, Daniel was chief advisor to King Darius. Nowadays, a prime minister is someone in 
  48. charge of running a country.
  49.  
  50. slaves
  51. Slaves were servants who were not paid any wages. They belonged to their masters and could be bought 
  52. and sold like a car or a house.
