The deposits mined at Broken Hill were possibly created by "black smokers" - undersea volcanic vents that blow out metal-rich fluids (like a chimney puffing smoke). Metals from these fluids were deposited on the seafloor in thin layers. Zinc, lead, manganese, and iron have all been mined at Broken Hill.
