  10. PixFolio is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a
  11. variety of bitmapped graphics formats and maintain multiple catalogs of
  12. images.
  13.  
  14. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  15.     BMP/DIB-Windows Bitmap
  16.     CLP -   Windows clipboard file
  17.     DRW/GRF - Micrografx draw and graph files.
  18.     EPS -   Encapsulated Postscript with imbedded TIFF preview images.
  19.     FLI/FLC - Autodesk Animator and Animator Pro (tm) files.
  20.     GIF -   CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format
  21.     ICO -   Windows Icon
  22.     ICS -   Image Cytometry ICS files.
  23.     IFF -   IFF/LBM (Amiga) used by Computer Eyes frame grabber.
  24.     IMG -   GEM/IMG (Digital Research).
  25.     JPG -   JPEG
  26.     MAC -   Macintosh MacPaint files.
  27.     PCT -   Macintosh PICT files.
  28.     PCX -   Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush

  31.     TIFF-   Tag Image Format. Most formats including 24 bit color
  32.             are supported.

  36. *** Optional features ***
  37. PixFolio supports the additional file formats if you purchase the optional,
  38. extra cost ($15) PixFolio-Plus upgrade. This option requires that you have a
  39. Photo CD capable of reading KODAK Photo CDs and/or the Microsoft Video for
  40. Windows software. The AVI/PCD, PixFolio-Plus option is available only to
  41. registered users of PixFolio.

  46. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  47. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.

  49. The major feature of PixFolio is the ability to build catalogs of
  50. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  51. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  52. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a
  53. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.
  54.  
  55. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  56. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.

  81. Main Features
  82.     PixFolio utilizes Microsoft's MDI (Multiple Document Interface) so that
  83.     multiple images can be open concurrently.
  84.  
  85. File Menu:
  86.     New File - create a blank image suitable for pasting from the
  87.            clipboard.
  88.     Open File - Open a new file for viewing.
  89.     Save File - Save an image, possibly in a different format.
  90.     Move/Copy file - Move or copy a file.
  91.     Delete - Delete a file.
  92.     Print - print all or part of an image.
  93.     Select Printer - select a printer

  96. Catalog Menu:
  97.     Select catalog: Create, delete, select or rename an image catalog.
  98.     Catalog. Create or update a catalog entry for a displayed image.
  99.     Browse Catalog. View catalog entries one by one; select a subset
  100.                     for viewing.
  101.     Build Catalog. Create catalog entries for groups of images.
  102.     View thumbnails of catalog entries.
  103.     Print Catalog Entries. Two formats are provided.
  104.     Export - Export the contents of a catalog for input to a database
  105.          or spreadsheet.

  108. Edit Menu:
  109.     Paste palette and image from clipboard.
  110.     Copy all or part of an image to the clipboard.

  113.     Expand an image to fill the dimensions of the current window.
  114.     Resize an image by a percentage amount or fit to a given dimension.

  117.     Set background color used when image is expanded.
  118.     Set whether to use a solid or pattern background color.
  119.     Display DIB or Bitmap format.
  120.     Control whether warning messages will be displayed.
  121.     Establish default operating options.

  123. Palette Options:
  124.     Palette manipulation (Brightness and contrast).
  125.     Convert to gray scale.
  126.     Dither to Black & White or color palette.
  127.     Play a GIF animation sequence.
  128.     Single step through a GIF animation sequence.
  129.     Change the speed of a GIF animation sequence.

  131. Capture:
  132.     Capture the contents of another screen or the Windows desktop.
  133.  
  134. Other:
  135.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a marquee can be
  136.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse
  137.     button can be used to draw a stretch marquee where the selected
  138.     image rectangle is copied.
  139.  
  140. Help:
  141.     Context sensitive help is included for all menu items.
  142.  
  143. **** Other Features ****
  144.  
  145.     PixFolio version 2.0 supports OLE version 1.0 as a server only. PixFolio
  146.     will automatically register itself as an OLE server the first time that it
  147.     is executed.
  148.  
  149.     PixFolio will accept "Drag and Drop" filenames from File Manager.
  150.  
  151. ******** Equipment Requirements **********
  152.  
  153. While PixFolio will execute in a minimal Windows installation, for example, a
  154. 286 with 2 megabytes of memory, program operation will be severely inhibited
  155. by a lack of memory. On such a configuration, large bitmaps, especially 8 or
  156. 24 bit images may fail. Other applications could be adversely affected as
  157. well and fail with unexpected UAE's. Actual results will vary depending upon
  158. the amount of memory used by other applications running concurrently.
  159.  
  160. PixFolio was developed and tested on a 20-MHz 386 with 8 megabytes of memory.
  161. It is recommended that PixFolio be run on a machine with at least 4 and pre-
  162. ferrably, 6 megabytes of memory. Running in 386-Enhanced mode will also
  163. make available the benefits of virtual memory.
  164.  
  165. The display of images containing more than 16 colors requires that you have
  166. a Super VGA or better video display and a 256 color Windows device driver in
  167. order to display the full range of colors in the image. However, PixFolio
  168. incorporates dithering functions that will allow display of a 256
  169. color image using a 16 color driver such as the standard VGA driver. Such
  170. operations are slow and the results are not as good as if you have a video
  171. display capable of displaying 256 colors.
  172.  
  173. ********** Program Limitations *************
  174.  
  175. PixFolio has no limit on the number of catalogs that can be created or the
  176. size of these catalogs except as noted below and the amount of available
  177. memory. However, the following points should be noted:
  178.  
  179. 1. PixFolio 2.0 will only run under Windows 3.1 or higher. Catalog file
  180.    formats are compatible with PixFolio version 1.04 with one exception:
  181.    if the text in a catalog entry's description exceeds 1200 bytes,
  182.    the catalog cannot be read by versions of PixFolio prior to version 2.0.
  183.  
  184. 2. The size of a catalog is limited by the amount of disk space where it
  185.    resides or 2,048 index entries. Catalog records are variable length and
  186.    depend upon the type of image and how big the comments are. It is
  187.    recommended that for performance reasons that catalogs be limited to
  188.    less than 2000 entries.
  189.  
  190. 3. PixFolio may encounter difficulty with extremely large images, those in
  191.    excess of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is particularly true of color images
  192.    and even more so by 24 bit color or gray scale images. This is primarily
  193.    due to the increased memory requirements.
  194.  
  195. 4. While PixFolio and Windows supports 24 bit color and gray scale images,
  196.    the display of such images using a video driver that only displays 256
  197.    colors, can result in some lengthy delays whenever windows has to realize
  198.    the 24 bit RGB data to an 8 bit palette. It may take 15 to 20 minutes to
  199.    realize a 640 x 480 image depending upon the speed of your machine.
  200.    Dithering a 24 bit image to 256 colors can take more than an hour in some
  201.    cases. If you plan to work with 24 bit images, you may wish to invest in
  202.    a video board that supports "high color". One such board that appears to
  203.    work quite well is the ATI VGASTEREO F/X card.
  204.  
  205. 5. The support for GIF animation in PixFolio requires large amounts of free
  206.    memory. GIF animation files with a large number of frames or overlays may
  207.    unexpectedly fail if PixFolio runs out of memory.
  208.  
  209.    Autodesk FLI/FLC animation files likewise require large amounts om memory.
  210.    To provide maximum performance, the entire image is loaded into memory to
  211.    reduce delays caused by reading from disk. A lack of physical memory that
  212.    requires Windows to utilize paged virtual memory (in 386 Enhanced mode)
  213.    can result in "jumpy" animations. In addition a high performance video
  214.    board and driver is recommended to optimally display animation files
  215.    without pauses that destroy the effect.
  216.  
  217. 6. PixFolio has not been rigorously tested in a network environment. The
  218.    affect of network operations and more than one user accessing PixFolio
  219.    files concurrently cannot be predicted.
  220.  
  221. 7. Not all graphics formats are supported equally with respect to reading and
  222.    saving a file. For example, not all of the compression options are
  223.    currently supported for saving TIFF images. GIF images can only be saved
  224.    in GIF87a format. Likewise, some of the more obscure or obsolete formats
  225.    such as 4 color CGA formats for PCX cannot be written although they can be
  226.    read.
  227.  
  228.    CCITT Group 4 TIFF file comprssion formats are not supported at this time.
  229.  
  230. 8. The author has not been able to test PixFolio with printers that print in
  231.    color in Windows 3.1 except for an Epson 2550.
  232.  
  233.    One user has reported that PixFolio give very good results printing color
  234.    images on Start Micronics NX-1000 Rainbow and NX-1020 printers but you must
  235.    obtain the OEM driver from Star Micronics. Use of HP Deskjet 500C printers
  236.    requires obtaining the latest drivers.
  237.  
  238.    Printer performance when running under Windows 3.1 is much improved. It is
  239.    both faster as well as of higher quality. Changes to the printer drivers
  240.    also enable printing to color printers such as the Epson LQ-2550.
  241.  
  242. 9. The implementation of Micrografx .DRW and .GRF files is not rigorous. Some
  243.    features of these files are not supported. Unless you have Adobe Type
  244.    Manager or scalable typefaces, the rendition of fonts used in these files
  245.    may not be optimal when Windows matches fonts.
  246.  
  247. 10. Other program limitations, if any, can be determined by accessing the
  248.    online context-sensitive help.
  249.  
  250.  
  251. ****** Installation and Getting Started*******
  252.  
  253. If your copy of PixFolio was received on a distribution diskette, the
  254. installation should be done from within windows by running "SETUP" from drive
  255. A: or B: (whichever is appropriate). This is important as the files on a
  256. distribution diskette are compressed. Otherwise, the following installation
  257. procedure should be followed:

  259. It is suggested that the files which constitute PixFolio be placed in their
  260. own subdirectory on your hard disk. These files are:

  277. Once the above files have been located in the subdirectory of your choice,
  278. start Windows and then use the Program Manager "Add" command to add PixFolio
  279. to the desired program group.

  281. When PixFolio runs for the first time, it will establish a section in
  282. your WIN.INI file with program variables. These default options should enable
  283. you to start using PixFolio immediately. Once PixFolio is running you may
  284. access the online Help command for specific instructions and explanation of
  285. PixFolio menu commands.

  288. reviewing the user guide.
