Popular Songs
compiled by Wayne Leman
(Shareware fee: $10.00 per group.)
In POPULAR.ZIP, I have compiled the 24 tunes with the popular
shareware program PIANOMAN. {PIANOMAN was written by Neil Rubenking,
which is available for downloading from CompuServe (PMAN40.ZIP, in the
IBMNEW Forum, Music library) and many other bulletin boards. PIANOMAN
is also available on diskette for a shareware fee of $25.00 from:
Support Group, Inc. // Box 130 // McHenry, MD 21541 or by calling
1-800-USA-GROUP.}
Anyone who registers their usage of Pianoman with Support Group,
Inc., receives diskettes with the latest version of the program and
many additional tunes which can be played with Pianoman.
Each tune in this collection (POPULAR.ZIP) has been converted to
a stand-alone program with PLAYER PIANO (PLAYRPNO.EXE) which
accompanies PIANOMAN. To hear a tune, simply type its MS-DOS filename
to hear the music through your computer speaker. There is an
accompanying title screen with each song. A title screen contains the
title of a song and its author, if known.
PIANOMAN was designed to allow a maximum of nine lines of text on
a title screen. For several songs special Batch Files were made to
allow more lines to appear on the screen.
You may stop the music of any song by hitting any key while the
song is playing on your computer. If you wish to hear all of the
songs in succession, type POPULAR<ENTER>.
Speaker acoustics of different computers vary considerably.
Generally, the larger the speaker and its sound box area, the better
the sound will be. (But the sound from the small speaker on my laptop
computer is acceptable enough for me to do music compilation on it.)
If you have access to more than one computer, try playing the songs on
each. You may find that you prefer the sound quality on one of them.
PIANOMAN is capable of simulating multi-part harmony through your
computer speaker. Most of the songs in this collection were compiled
with pleasant PIANOMAN harmony. A few of the songs only have a melody
line. A few others have two versions, one with harmony and another
with the melody line only. See the song list below to determine which
songs have such dual versions.
I hope you enjoy listening to the popular old songs in this
collection. If you do, I request that you send me a shareware fee
of `~$10.00~`, to recognize the many hours I spent compiling the music
and putting the collection together. Please go to `<LEMANREG.##>*` to
register your copy of this collection, accompanied by your shareware
fee. (Clarence Wright, the author of this tutorial, assures me that
once you to to `<LEMANREG.##>*`, the built-in Text Editor within
`DART` will be activated and that you can fill out, save and send the
Registration Form right to your printer. `~Have I ever lied to~`
`~you ?!?~`)
As an example of what you will be getting, The songs in
POPULAR.ZIP have been sung for many years, some for two hundred years
or more. They have all been popular with American singers, although
some, like "Auld Lang Syne" (Scotland) and "Frère Jacques" (France),
originated overseas. The popular old songs in this collection are:
ANNIE.BAT Annie Laurie, by Lady John Douglas Scott
AULD.BAT Auld Lang Syne, traditional Scottish song (with harmony)
AULD-MEL.BAT Auld Lang Syne (melody only)
AURALEE.BAT Aura Lee (with harmony)
AURALEEM.BAT Aura Lee (melody only; note-length compilation bug error
midway)
BONNIE.BAT My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
CANNON.BAT Wabash Cannon Ball
CINDY.BAT Cindy
DAISY.EXE A Bicycle Built for Two, by Henry Dacre
DREAMER.BAT Beautiful Dreamer, by Stephen Foster
GIRL.BAT Dear Old Girl
HOKEY.EXE The Hokey Pokey, an American folk song
JOHN.EXE Are You Sleeping, Brother John? (from French round)

JAKOB.EXE Onkel Jakob (German, from traditional French round)
IRISH.BAT My Wild Irish Rose, by Chancellor John Olcott
KENTUCKY.BAT My Old Kentucky Home, by Stephen Collins Foster

NEWYORK.BAT Sidewalks of New York
NIGHT.BAT All Through the Night
OHDEAR.BAT Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?
SHENANDO.EXE Shenandoah
SUMMER.BAT In the Good Old Summertime

TEXASMEL.BAT The Yellow Rose of Texas (melody only)
TRULY.BAT I Love You Truly, by Carrie Jacobs-Bond
VIRGINIA.BAT Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, by James Bland
WABASH.BAT On the Banks of the Wabash, by Paul Dresser
YANKEE.BAT Yankee Doodle
One of my friends likes one of the cheerful dance tunes I
compiled (in the collection DANCES.ZIP) so much that he has placed it
in his AUTOEXEC.BAT file, so that it gives him a nice start to the
beginning of each of his work days on the computer. You, too, may
want to place a tune in an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or another of your batch
files. Just type the name of the tune (the filename with .EXE
extension, unless you know how to work with embedded Batch files) as
one of the lines in your batch file. Be sure to specify the path to
the tune if the music file appears anywhere other than in the root
directory on your computer.
One of my hobbies is listening to music on the computer and
compiling tunes with PIANOMAN. I have compiled and uploaded several
other collections of music (some quite large, and most with four-part
PIANOMAN harmony) to the CompuServe IBMNEW forum, Music library, as
well as to a number of other computer bulletin boards. (In the
CompuServe music library, browse on the keyword PIANOMAN and look for
my CompuServe I.D. number.)
To obtain a listing of my other music collections and ordering
information, fill out and send me `<LEMANREG.##>*` and include a
Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope.
