  20. Recommendation V.42 bis describes a data compression procedure for use 
  21. with V-Series DCEs.

  23. The principal characteristics of the data compression procedure are:
  24.  
  25.     a) a compression procedure based on an algorithm which 
  26.        encodes strings of characters received from data terminal 
  27.        equipment (DTE)
  28.  
  29.     b) a decoding procedure which recovers the strings of 
  30.        characters from received codewords;
  31.  
  32.     c) an automatic transparent mode of operation when 
  33.        uncompressible data is detected.
