  19. Recommendation V.17 defines the modulation methods and operating 
  20. sequences for a modem intended only for use in high speed facsimile 
  21. applications.
  22.  
  23. Appropriate T-Series Recommendations should be consulted regarding 
  24. operating procedures and other features employed in facsimile 
  25. transmission applications, as these differ from those recommended for 
  26. high speed modems for general applications.

  28. The modem has the following principal characteristics:

  30.     a) Provision for half duplex operation at data signalling 
  31.        rates of:
  32.  
  33.     -   14 400 bit/s synchronous,
  34.  
  35.     -   12 000 bit/s synchronous,
  36.  
  37.     -   9600 bit/s synchronous,
  38.  
  39.     -   7200 bit/s synchronous;
  40.  
  41.     b) Quadrature amplitude modulation with synchronous line 
  42.        transmission at 2400 symbols per second.

  44.     c) Inclusion of data scramblers, adaptive equalizers and 
  45.        eight-state trellis coding.

  47.     d) Two sequences for training and synchronization: long train 
  48.        and resync.
