  20. Recommendation T.503 defines a document application profile conforming 
  21. to the T.410 series of Recommendations.
  22.  
  23. Its purpose is to specify an interchange format suitable for the 
  24. interchange of Group 4 facsimile documents that contain only raster 
  25. graphics.
  26.  
  27. Documents are interchanged in a formatted form, which enables the 
  28. recipient to display or print the document as intended by the 
  29. originator.

  31. Recommendation T.503, together with designated parts of T.563, defines 
  32. a document application profile that may be used by any telematic 
  33. service.
  34.  
  35. This document application profile is designed to be independent of 
  36. the means used to create or to interchange the encoded documents.

  38. The features which can be interchanged used this document application 
  39. profile fall into the following categories:
  40.  
  41.     a)   Page format features - these concern how the layout of 
  42.     each page of a document will appear when reproduced;
  43.  
  44.     b)   Raster-graphics layout and imaging features - these 
  45.     concern how the document content will appear within the pages 
  46.     of the reproduced document;
  47.  
  48.     c)   Raster-graphics coding - these concern the raster 
  49.     graphics representations and control functions that make up 
  50.     the document raster-graphics content.

  52. It is assumed that, when negotiation is performed by the service using 
  53. this document application profile, all non-basic features are subject 
  54. to negotiation.
