  21. Recommendation Q.83.2 defines the stage 2 of the Call Hold (CH) 
  22. supplementary service. Stage 2 identifies the functional capabilities 
  23. and the information flows needed to support the service as described 
  24. in stage 1. The stage 2 description also identifies user operations 
  25. not directly associated with a call (see Recommendation I.130).

  27. Recommendation Q.83.2 is specified according to the methodology 
  28. specified in Recommendation Q.65.

  30. In addition, Recommendation Q.83.2 does not specify the requirements 
  31. where the service is provided to the user via a private ISDN. 
  32. Recommendation Q.83.2 does not specify the requirements for the 
  33. allocation of defined functional entities within a private ISDN, it 
  34. does however define which functional entities may be allocated to a 
  35. private ISDN.

  37. Recommendation Q.83.2 does not specify the additional requirements 
  38. where the service is provided to the user via a telecommunications 
  39. network that is not an ISDN.

  41. The Call Hold service allows a user to interrupt communications on an 
  42. existing call/connection and then subsequently, if desired, 
  43. re-establish communications. A B-channel may or may not be reserved 
  44. after the communication is interrupted to allow the origination or 
  45. possible termination of other calls. Reservation must be provided by 
  46. the service provider as a user option. The Call Hold service includes 
  47. the retrieve operation which re-establishes communication on a 
  48. B-channel between the served user and the held party.

  50. This supplementary service is not applicable to non-voice services.

  52. Recommendation Q.83.2 is applicable to the stage 3 Recommendations 
  53. for the integrated services digital network.
