  20.  
  21. Recommendation Q.83.1 defines the stage 2 of the integrated services 
  22. digital network (ISDN) as provided for the call waiting (CW) 
  23. supplementary service. Stage 2 identifies the functional capabilities 
  24. and the information flows needed to support the service description. 
  25. The stage 2 description also identifies user operations not directly 
  26. associated with a call (see Rec. I.130).

  28. Recommendation Q.83.1 is specified according to the methodology 
  29. specified in Recommendation Q.65 [2].

  31. Recommendation Q.83.1 does not formally describe the relationship 
  32. between this supplementary service and the basic call but, where 
  33. possible, the information is included for guidance.

  35. In addition, Recommendation Q.83.1 does not specify the requirements 
  36. where the service is provided to the user via a private ISDN. This 
  37. Recommendation does not specify the requirements for the allocation of 
  38. defined functional entities within a private ISDN; it does however 
  39. define which functional entities may be allocated to a private ISDN.

  41. Recommendation Q.83.1 does not specify the additional requirements 
  42. where the service is provided to the user via a telecommunications 
  43. network that is not an ISDN.

  45. The CW supplementary service permits a subscriber to be notified of an 
  46. incoming call (as per basic call procedures) with an indication that 
  47. no interface information channel is available. The user then has the 
  48. choice of accepting, rejecting or ignoring the waiting call (as per 
  49. basic call procedures).

  51. The CW supplementary service is considered meaningful when applied to 
  52. the telephony teleservice and the speech and 3.1 kHz audio bearer 
  53. services. Furthermore, it may also be meaningful when applied to 
  54. other services.

  56. Recommendation Q.83.1 is applicable to the stage 3 Recommendations 
  57. for the ISDN CW supplementary service. The term "stage 3" is also 
  58. defined in Recommendation I.130.
