  20. Recommendation Q.81.2 defines the stage 2 of the Multiple Subscriber 
  21. Number (MSN) supplementary service for the integrated services digital 
  22. network (ISDN) as provided by telecommunications operators. Stage 2 
  23. identifies the functional capabilities and the information flows 
  24. needed to support the stage 1 service description. The stage 2 
  25. description also identifies user operations not directly associated 
  26. with a call (see Recommendation I.130).

  28. This Recommendation is specified according to the methodology 
  29. specified in Recommendation Q.65.

  31. Recommendation Q.81.2 does not formally describe the relationship 
  32. between this supplementary service and the basic call, but where 
  33. possible this information is included for guidance.

  35. In addition, Recommendation Q.81.2 does not specify the requirements 
  36. where the service is provided to the user via a private ISDN. 
  37. Recommendation Q.81.2 does not specify the requirements for the 
  38. allocation of defined functional entities within a private ISDN, it 
  39. does, however, define which functional entities may be allocated to 
  40. a private ISDN.

  42. Recommendation Q.81.2 does not specify the additional requirements 
  43. where the service is provided to the user via a telecommunications 
  44. network that is not an ISDN.

  46. The MSN supplementary service provides the possibility for assigning 
  47. multiple numbers to a single public or private access.

  49. This allows e.g.:
  50.  
  51.     1) a calling user to select, via the public network, one or 
  52.        multiple distinct terminals out of a multiple choice;
  53.  
  54.     2) to identify the terminal to the network for the application 
  55.        of other supplementary services.

  57. It is considered:
  58.  
  59.     -   that in the case of a basic access some service providers 
  60. may not have knowledge or control over what is connected, e.g. a 
  61. private ISDN or a terminal configuration;
  62.  
  63.     -   that service providers have differing numbering methods.
  64.  
  65. The MSN supplementary service is applicable to all telecommunication 
  66. services.

  68. Recommendation Q.81.2 is applicable to the stage 3 Recommendations 
  69. for the ISDN MSN supplementary service as defined in 
  70. Recommendation I.130.
