  11.           CONSTRUCTION, INSTALLATION AND PROTECTION OF
  12.           TELECOMMUNICATION CABLES IN PUBLIC NETWORKS

  14.        The CCITT,
  15.  
  16. considering
  17.  
  18.        (a)  that the location of faults on underground cables and  the  repair
  19. of these faults can entail great expense;
  20.  
  21.        (b)  that the interruptions to service  likely  to  be  caused  by  the
  22. occurrence of these faults must be avoided with the greatest care;
  23.  
  24.        (c)  that the  occurrence  of  these  faults,  other  than  by  outside
  25. factors, is mainly determined by the construction, installation and protective 
  26. measures applied,
  27.  
  28. unanimously recommends
  29.  
  30.        that, when selecting and installing cables, Administrations  will  find
  31. it in their interest  to  comply  with  the  CCITT  Handbook:  "Outside  plant
  32. technologies for public networks".
  33.  
  34.        This  Handbook  replaces  the  "CCITT  Recommendations  concerning  the
  35. construction, installation and protection of telecommunication cables in public 
  36. networks", ITU, Geneva, revision 1974, amendments and additions 1977 and 1986.  The 
  37. Handbook consists of the following five parts:
  38.  
  39.        Part I:   Basic information about the construction of telecommunication 
  40.                  cables.
  41.  
  42.        Part II:  Installation and assemblage of telecommunication  cables  and
  43.                  their supporting structure.
  44.  
  45.        Part III: Pressurization of telecommunication cables.
  46.  
  47.        Part  IV-A:  Protection  of  telecommunication  cables  and  associated
  48.                  hardware against corrosion.
  49.  
  50.        Part  IV-B:  Protection  of  telecommunication  cables   supports   and
  51.                  underground structure against other hazards.
  52.  
  53.        Part V:   Fault location and repair of telecommunication cables.
