  18. The objective of Recommendation I.324 is to provide a common 
  19. understanding of the CCITT studies on the general architecture of an 
  20. ISDN from the functional point of view. The model is not intended to 
  21. require or exclude any specific implementation of an ISDN, but only to 
  22. provide a guide for the specification of ISDN capabilities.

  24. It presents a basic architectural model of an ISDN, with its eight 
  25. main switching and signalling functional capabilities:
  26.  
  27.     -   ISDN local connection related functions;
  28.  
  29.     -   64 kbit/s circuit switched functional entities;
  30.  
  31.     -   64 kbit/s circuit non-switched functional entities;
  32.  
  33.     -   packet switching functional entities;
  34.  
  35.     -   frame mode functional entities;
  36.  
  37.     -   common channel inter-exchange signalling functional 
  38.         entities;
  39.  
  40.     -   switched functional entities at rates greater than 
  41.         64 kbit/s;
  42.  
  43.     -   non-switched functional entities at rates greater than 
  44.         64 kbit/s.
