INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION
ITU-T RECOMMENDATION SUMMARY
Rec. No. : I.311
Title : B-ISDN General network aspects
Study Group : XVIII - ISDN
Version : New
Date of adoption : 1991
Notes :
Recommendation I.311 describes networking techniques, signalling
principles, traffic control and resources management for B-ISDN.
Networking techniques:
B-ISDN networking techniques include network layering aspects and
applications of the virtual path and virtual channel.
Signalling principles:
In B-ISDN, the use of the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) allows for
a multiplicity of service types and characteristics and for the locial
separation of signalling from user information streams. A user may have
multiple signalling entities connected to the network call management
via separate ATM virtual channel connections. Recommendation I.311
identifies the signalling capabilities needed in B-ISDN and the
requirements for establishing signalling communication paths.
Traffic control and resource management:
The B-ISDN, which is based on the ATM technique, is designed to
transport a wide variety of traffic classes satisfying the required
performance in terms of user and network requirements. To cope with
these requirements, an ATM-based network will provide the following
traffic control capabilities: connection admission control, usage
parameter control, priority control, congestion control.
