  19. Recommendation I.311 describes networking techniques, signalling 
  20. principles, traffic control and resources management for B-ISDN.

  22. Networking techniques:
  23.  
  24. B-ISDN networking techniques include network layering aspects and 
  25. applications of the virtual path and virtual channel.
  26.  
  27. Signalling principles:
  28.  
  29. In B-ISDN, the use of the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) allows for 
  30. a multiplicity of service types and characteristics and for the locial 
  31. separation of signalling from user information streams. A user may have 
  32. multiple signalling entities connected to the network call management 
  33. via separate ATM virtual channel connections. Recommendation I.311 
  34. identifies the signalling capabilities needed in B-ISDN and the 
  35. requirements for establishing signalling communication paths.

  37. Traffic control and resource management:
  38.  
  39. The B-ISDN, which is based on the ATM technique, is designed to 
  40. transport a wide variety of traffic classes satisfying the required 
  41. performance in terms of user and network requirements. To cope with 
  42. these requirements, an ATM-based network will provide the following 
  43. traffic control capabilities: connection admission control, usage 
  44. parameter control, priority control, congestion control.
