  20. Recommendation I.121states the basic principles of broadband aspects 
  21. of integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) and indicates further 
  22. developments of the ISDN network capabilities in order to support more 
  23. advanced services and applications.

  25. The B-ISDN Recommendations were written taking into account the 
  26. following:
  27.  
  28.     -   the emerging demand for broadband services;
  29.  
  30.     -   the availability of high speed transmission, switching and 
  31.         signal processing technologies;
  32.  
  33.     -   the improved data and image processing capabilities 
  34.         available to the user;
  35.  
  36.     -   the advances in software application processing in the 
  37.         computer and telecommunication industries;
  38.  
  39.     -   the need to integrate both interactive and distribution 
  40.         services;
  41.  
  42.     -   the need to integrate both circuit and packet transfer mode 
  43.         into one universal broadband network;
  44.  
  45.     -   the need to provide flexibility in satisfying the 
  46.         requirements of both user and operator;
  47.  
  48.     -   the need to cover broadband aspects of ISDN in CCITT 
  49.         Recommendations.

  51. The main feature of the ISDN concept is the support of a wide range of 
  52. audio, video and data applications in the same network. A key element 
  53. of service integration for an ISDN is the provision of a wide range of 
  54. services to a broad variety of users utilizing a limited set of 
  55. connection types and multipurpose user/network interfaces.
