  20. The international telex service is a service provided by 
  21. telecommunication Administrations of almost all countries of the 
  22. world for the purpose of text communication. In its basic form it is 
  23. used for directly transmitting telex messages between subscriber 
  24. terminal equipment connected to the telex network or to/from public 
  25. telex stations.

  27. Recommendation F.59 summarizes the service characteristics of the 
  28. international telex service and the service-related basic 
  29. characteristics of telex terminal equipment.
  30.  
  31. This summary of all service-related principles for the international 
  32. telex service is intended to facilitate a common understanding of 
  33. this service, bearing in mind:
  34.  
  35.     -  that the international telex service is the only text 
  36.        communication subscriber service available throughout the 
  37.        world;
  38.  
  39.     -   that the perceived special merits of this service are its 
  40.         technical reliability and operational simplicity;
  41.  
  42.     -   that the operational provisions for the international telex 
  43.         service can be found in Recommendation F.60, 
  44.  
  45. but other service principles and service-oriented network and terminal 
  46. characteristics have to be selected from a number of F-, R-, S- and 
  47. U-Series Recommendations in addition.

  49. This summary should also be the basis for all considerations of 
  50. interworking of the international telex service with other services.
