  21. Recommendation F.435 is one of a set of Recommendations for message 
  22. handling. The entire set provides a comprehensive specification for 
  23. message handling comprising any number of cooperating open-systems.
  24.  
  25. Message handling systems and services enable users to exchange 
  26. messages on a store-and-forward basis. A message submitted by one 
  27. user, the originator, is conveyed by the message transfer system 
  28. (MTS), the principal component of a larger message handling system 
  29. (MHS), and is subsequently delivered to one or more additional users, 
  30. the message's recipients.

  32. An MHS comprises a variety of interconnected functional entities. 
  33. Message transfer agents (MTAs) cooperate to perform the 
  34. store-and-forward message transfer function. Message stores (MSs) 
  35. provide storage for messages and enable their submission, retrieval 
  36. and management. User agents (UAs) help users access MHS. Access units 
  37. (AUs) provide links to other communication systems and services of 
  38. various kinds (e.g., other telematic services, postal services).

  41. description of the message handling application called EDI messaging.
