  7. Well folks,
  8.  
  9. I've been playing around with the new VGA game "Where in the World is Carmen
  10. Sandiego", and loving every minute of it.  Since my copy is unprotected, and
  11. I don't have an almanac/atlas good enough to answer the doc-checks (and I
  12. guess I'm too stupid to figure out 80% of the quizzes in the damn game) to get
  13. my ol' character upgraded, for the more challenging levels of play, I wrote
  14. a nifty little file editor.

  16. Carmen Sandiego writes detective roster information to a file called
  17. DETECTIV.DAT.  This file holds the number detectives, their names, rank,
  18. number of cases solved and whether or not a game has been saved (in which
  19. case, CARMEN.SAV is loaded after you "log in" to the game).

  21. To use, simply type >caredit, and follow the prompts.  If DETECTIV.DAT
  22. is not present, CAREDIT.EXE will automatically create a blank file to
  23. work with.  CAREDIT will only edit the first name on the roster, since
  24. there is no reason to edit any others.

  26. Enter your new name, rank code, and the number of cases solved.

  28. You can play around with "number of cases solved" to get some mega-hard, or
  29. simply impossible games to play around with.  High ranks mixed with large
  30. number of solved cases make for tougher games.

  34. Problems and Precautions:

  37. Be careful entering your name.  Keep it small like "Tom Jones" or something.
  38. The editor will not allow invalid characters, but the game will "cut" the
  39. number of characters in a name, if the font characters are too big.  In other
  40. words, you can have 21 lowercase "i"s in the name, but only 8 capital "W"s.

  42. Also, I have NOT yet found the proper rank and number of solved cases to find
  43. Carmen Sandiego.  It is obviously at the "Super Sleuth" level of the game
  44. with about 30 or so completed missions...  Never-the-less, you can have
  45. fun playing around with the editor...
