MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR
==========================
Getting Ready for First Flight
------------------------------
Your first flight over the modem should be from
MEIGS airport (from which it automatically starts) to O'HARE INTERNATIONAL,
which is about 10-15 minutes away. To set up for your flight, do the
following which will give you the best results for flying with a partner:
1) Hit "2" to get into the VIEWS mode. Press "5" to select SMALL V.
Then select "C" to Setup Windows. Turn on the MAP and move it to the
very top right corner of the screen (but staying in the BLUE). Then
hit spacebar and turn off window, now get out of the VIEWS mode.
(when the modem comm bar comes on, you wouldn't have been able to see
what was going on with the map!)
2) If you want to set the time, go into mode (3). Setting the JOYSTICK/MOUSE
by going into the SIM mode by pressing "4" and then hitting "E" would get
you to the JOYSTICK selection. Turn on the Joysticks desired, then hit
"4" to collaborate (Nothing should happen). Then get out of the MODE and
joystick should be working. setting MOUSE is also in mode (3).
3) Set NAV 1 to 113.9 by hitting "N" then "1", now use the "+" or "-" keys
(NOT ON THE KEYPAD) to set first 3 digits. Then hit "N" then "N" to
set the last digit in the tenths place. Go into "4" mode to set ADF. Now
select ADF from menu and change digits (High, Middle, Low) to 000 (you
will see the changes on your aiplane digital display). Then ACTIVATE
ADF. Press ESC. Now go to SET AUTOPILOT and change the following: HEADING
to 290 (after hitting ENTER it won't come out exact, but that's alright),
and ALTITUDE to 2500. Now hit spacebar to go back to normal flight mode.
You will now notice that the second NAV display has turned into a ADF
pointer (this tracks the other plane and points to wherever they are
in relation to you). NAV 1 is used for Airport coordinates and helping you
get there, you might not need it on this flight, but just check how it
works (needles on indicator will move to center).
4) You should be on the normal screen. Put down a flap (This will help for a
smooth takeoff). Make sure Joystick/Mouse/Keyboard is working and check
all coordinates that you have set. Roll up (PgUp-PgDn is throttle) so
that you are ahead of your partners plane when he comes (or have him do
so) and remember "." is brakes!
5) Go into MODE by pressing "1". Choose Entertainment "5" and then go into
MULTI-PLAYER "1". Set your Baud and Com port, then change airplane color
to change other plane (hit "6" 12 times, red works best!). Now you select
WAIT FOR RING or DIAL. Select DIAL option and then type ATDT (then number)
if you are to call. Select WAIT FOR RING, and just wait! Upon connecting
you must (both of you) press "1" ON-LINE, then "2" SEND PLANE several times
to send plane coordinates and type of plane. Now hit SPACEBAR and use
views or Map to see other plane. To communicate press "0" then type
message and press "ENTER" (you might get an extra line at the bottom at
first that blinks...which is an error, to erase that problem just go into
mode "1" and then hit SPACEBAR and you will notice it gone.).
6) When both are ready you will go FULL THROTTLE for takeoff and at 70 KNOTS
get nose up and begin takeoff. Make sure that the indicator doesn't go
over the tops of the buildings ahead (it will help you from not stalling)
and after clearing the runway put up GEAR and FLAPS. After you get
to 120 KNOTS stay at that speed by reducing throttle, this is so you don't
pass the other plane and to have both at a same speed. While flying
you will notice a black structure to your left (use views), when passing
it press "Z" to get autopilot going and let go of controls, it'll do the
work! Now you can sit back and just check speed, type to partner, or just
look at views ("S" views are nice!).
7) By using MAP VIEW ("+" or "-" zooms in and out) you can see your relation
to airport and other plane. As you get close, get ready to land by
putting gear down, then 1 or 2 FLAPS down to decrease speed to 100-.
Using the map you will notice a runway almost parallel at a heading of
270, that's the one you want to land on. Take off AUTOPILOT by pressing
"Z" and move toward your right, using MAP close up...align yourself with
the runway, then look out cockpit and the V Indicator to get yourself
nice and straight. You should decrease altitude to about 1000 and get
indicator pointing on the lines of the runway. Put FLAPS all the way or
to the point you are going 70 KNOTS (which is ideal). When you are
about to hit ground pull up (which is called FLARING) and landing will
be smooth. Take off throttle and press period "." to stop (brakes).
8) If you and your partner want to go back, just turn around..set autopilot
to heading 110. Then repeat NEEDED procedures. When you reach the
coast, turn right to heading 180. You will see the runway and you'll
know what to do!
Hope this helps you! Get the quick reference file and print it out for the
function/flight keys. Pretty soon I will have the coordinates to different
airports ready for you as well! Until then...
