PC PageMaker release 3.01
May 25, 1990
FONTME.TXT
This file supplements the PageMaker 3.01 Update Guide, "Using
PageMaker in Windows 3.0," and contains step-by-step
instructions for:
* Updating the WIN.INI file with printer font metrics (PFM)
location(s)
* Installing screen fonts (FON)
For handy reference, you should print a copy of this file prior to
updating your WIN.INI file, and keep it along with your PageMaker
documentation.
=================================
Before you begin...
=================================
High resolution imagesetters, such as a Linotronic, usually have
just four ROM-resident printer fonts. Any additional fonts must be
downloaded to the imagesetter. To use downloadable printer fonts
with PageMaker 3.01 we have included 22 PostScript printer font
metric (PFM) files that contain character spacing and kerning
information PageMaker needs to space characters proportionally
on the screen and in print. PFM's are not downloadable printer
fonts. If you are not sending your publication to a service bureau
for imagesetter output, you'll need the actual printer fonts
for your printer in order for those fonts to appear in your
printed output.
For information on obtaining Adobe PostScript fonts for your
printer, contact your dealer or Adobe Systems sales at
(800) 344-8335.
Before you prepare your PageMaker files for output by a service
bureau, you should verify which format they prefer to receive your
publication files in, and the printer fonts they have available.
Some service bureaus may request printed-to-disk files in
PostScript format which they can simply download to the
imagesetter.
In any case, you'll need to advise your service bureau of the
fonts that were used in your publication.
Two screen font files (FON) have also been included with PageMaker
3.01: ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf Dingbats. Installation of
these two screen files allow you to view the fonts on screen as
they will appear when printed using the corresponding printer
fonts.
=================================
Font metrics and updating WIN.INI
=================================
When you choose the "INSTALL POSTSCRIPT FONT METRICS" option
during the PageMaker 3.01 installation program, additional PFM
(printer font metrics) and FON (screen fonts) files are copied to
your PageMaker directory, in a subdirectory called "metrics."
These files are used in imagesetter-targeted publications when
your system is updated with the following typefaces:
-Helvetica Narrow (PFM only)
-New Century Schoolbook (PFM only)
-Palatino (PFM only)
-ITC Avant Garde (PFM only)
-ITC Bookman (PFM only)
-ITC Zapf Chancery (FON & PFM)
-ITC Zapf Dingbats (FON & PFM)
Prior to updating your WIN.INI file, be sure that you've either
followed the printer installation procedure during the Windows 3.0
setup program, or configured the "Printers" section of the Windows
Control Panel for at least one, active PostScript printer. (See
your Windows 3.0 documentation for information on configuring
printers.)
The following procedures for updating WIN.INI need to be followed in
order for Windows and PageMaker to gain access to the additional PFM
files needed for information on imagesetter-targeted publications:
1) Change to the Windows directory and make a backup copy of
WIN.INI. For example, at the DOS prompt, type the
following:
cd\[windows directory]
...then press Enter.
copy win.ini winini.sav
...then press Enter. A copy of WIN.INI is saved as
WININI.SAV in the Windows directory.
NOTE: If you're already in Windows 3.0, open File Manager.
find WIN.INI in your Windows 3.0 directory and
highlight (select) the file. Click on the File menu
name and choose "Copy" (or press F8)...the Copy
dialog box appears. Type WININI.SAV in the "To:"
box, and press Enter (or choose "Copy"). A copy of
WIN.INI is saved as WININI.SAV in the Windows
directory.
2) Launch Windows and open "Notepad" (or type "win notepad"
from the DOS prompt).
NOTE: If you're already in Windows, simply double-click on
the Notepad icon in Program Manager's Accessories
group window to open Notepad.
3) Click on the File menu name and choose "Open...". Find the
"metrics" subdirectory (in the PageMaker directory) in the
"Directories:" scroll box and double-click on it. With the
cursor, highlight (select) the contents of the "Filename"
box and type:
fontme.txt
...then press Enter or click "OK."
4) Scroll to the following list of PFM files and highlight
(select) it:
softfonts=22
softfont1=c:\pm\metrics\ag______.pfm
softfont2=c:\pm\metrics\agbo____.pfm
softfont3=c:\pm\metrics\agd_____.pfm
softfont4=c:\pm\metrics\agdo____.pfm
softfont5=c:\pm\metrics\bd______.pfm
softfont6=c:\pm\metrics\bdi_____.pfm
softfont7=c:\pm\metrics\bl______.pfm
softfont8=c:\pm\metrics\bli_____.pfm
softfont9=c:\pm\metrics\hvn_____.pfm
softfont10=c:\pm\metrics\hvnb____.pfm
softfont11=c:\pm\metrics\hvnbo___.pfm
softfont12=c:\pm\metrics\hvno____.pfm
softfont13=c:\pm\metrics\ncb_____.pfm
softfont14=c:\pm\metrics\ncbi____.pfm
softfont15=c:\pm\metrics\nci_____.pfm
softfont16=c:\pm\metrics\ncr_____.pfm
softfont17=c:\pm\metrics\pb______.pfm
softfont18=c:\pm\metrics\pbi_____.pfm
softfont19=c:\pm\metrics\pi______.pfm
softfont20=c:\pm\metrics\pr______.pfm
softfont21=c:\pm\metrics\zc______.pfm
softfont22=c:\pm\metrics\zd______.pfm
NOTE: Prior to updating the WIN.INI file, the
directory\paths of the above PFM font filenames
can be easily edited in Notepad prior to modifying
WIN.INI to reflect different font locations. That
is, if you choose to locate PFM files in any
other directory...for example, C:\PSFONTS...you'll
need to reflect this path in the text above that you
paste into the WIN.INI file:
softfont1=c:\psfonts\ag______.pfm
Also, note that the PFM filenames must be 8
characters long, in either letters or combinations
of letters and underline characters. Following the
filenames, the 3-character extensions are always
indicated as PFM, which identifies these
files as printer font metrics files.
5) With text from step 4 above highlighted (selected), choose
"Copy" from the Edit menu.
6) While still in Notepad, open the file WIN.INI located in
your Windows directory. (See step 3 above for similar
procedure.)
7) Scroll or search for the first [PostScript,<port>] label
for the target printer connection that is to be used for
imagesetting output only, like from a Linotronic.
These labels appear at the top of any PostScript printer
port section(s) in WIN.INI. For example, you may find the
following:
[PostScript,COM1]
...or
[PostScript,FILE]
8) Place the cursor just below the [PostScript,<port>] label,
click to create an insertion point, and choose "Paste" from
the Edit menu (or press Shift+Insert).
NOTE: See the section below "IF YOU ALREADY HAVE POSTSCRIPT
SOFTFONTS INSTALLED..." if references to different
PFM files and their locations exist from previous
softfont installations.
9) Repeat step 8 above for any other [PostScript,<port>]
sections you anticipate using for composing imagesetter
targeted publications.
NOTE: Do not repeat for connections to laser printers that
might not support Adobe PostScript softfonts.
10) Choose "Save" from the File menu, and then choose "Exit" to
close Notepad.
NOTE: Make sure you save the WIN.INI file in the Windows
directory.
11) Go to the "Screen font installation" section below to
install screen fonts. If you choose not to install screen
fonts, exit and restart Windows to activate the modified
WIN.INI.
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE POSTSCRIPT SOFTFONTS INSTALLED...
If you already have PostScript softfonts installed, then
other softfont entries may already exist in the printer
section(s) of the WIN.INI file. To avoid conflict, you'll
need to edit WIN.INI using Notepad to include the
additional lines in continuous, numerical order. For
example, if 2 fonts already exist in the WIN.INI printer
section(s), and have a "softfonts=" line that reads:
softfonts=2
...you'll need to paste-in the text for the 22 softfonts
provided with PageMaker 3.01 below it, then edit the
"softfonts=" line to read:
softfonts=24
Finally, edit the 24 lines of text that follow to reflect
the correct numerical order (i.e. "softfont1" through
"softfont24").
NOTE: There should be no more than one "softfonts=" line
that indicates the total number of softfonts in each
of the PostScript printer port sections.
Also, note that these PFM's will be available to other
Windows applications that use softfonts in addition to
PageMaker.
=================================
Screen font installation
=================================
If you chose "INSTALL POSTSCRIPT FONT METRICS" during the
PageMaker 3.01 installation procedure, note that the Screen font
(FON) files (i.e. ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf Dingbats) were
also installed in the PageMaker\METRICS subdirectory. In order for
Windows and PageMaker to access these screen fonts you must:
1) Launch Windows and double-click on the Control Panel icon
(or type "win control" at the DOS prompt).
2) Double-click on the "Fonts" icon.
3) Choose "Add..." in the Fonts dialog box. The "Add Font
Files" dialog box appears.
4) In the "Directories:" scroll box, choose the correct file
location where the FON files are located (i.e. the
"metrics" subdirectory in the PageMaker directory).
5) In the "Font Files" scroll box on the left, scroll to
zd______.fon and zc______.fon and highlight (select) both
fonts.
6) Click "OK."
The selected Screen fonts will be copied automatically into
the "SYSTEM" subdirectory in the Windows directory. They
can be viewed in the Fonts dialog box under "Samples of
Font." Also, the [fonts] section of WIN.INI will be
automatically updated with the following text:
ZapfChancery-MediumItalic=ZC______.FON
ZapfDingbats=ZD______.FON
Screen font files are now installed and should appear as correct
screen representations of their associated printer fonts that are
chosen in "Type specs..." under the Type menu.
NOTE: You must exit and restart Windows in order for any
modifications to WIN.INI to take effect after installing PFM
files.
Also, if you experience any difficulty adding screen fonts
(FON) after you've deleted other screen fonts, exit Control
Panel and repeat the above steps for adding screen fonts.
For additional information on using fonts and other printing
issues, refer to the PageMaker 3.01 Update Guide, "Using PageMaker
in Windows 3.0," and the PageMaker 3.0 Release Notes, "Working
with a Service Bureau" and "Other PostScript Printing Issues", and
the Windows 3.0 documentation from Microsoft.
