  7. This file supplements the PageMaker 3.01 Update Guide, "Using
  8. PageMaker in Windows 3.0," and contains step-by-step
  9. instructions for:
  10.  
  11. *      Updating the WIN.INI file with printer font metrics (PFM)
  12.        location(s)
  13. *      Installing screen fonts (FON)
  14.  
  15. For handy reference, you should print a copy of this file prior to
  16. updating your WIN.INI file, and keep it along with your PageMaker
  17. documentation.
  18.  
  19. =================================
  20. Before you begin...
  21. =================================
  22. High resolution imagesetters, such as a Linotronic, usually have
  23. just four ROM-resident printer fonts. Any additional fonts must be
  24. downloaded to the imagesetter. To use downloadable printer fonts
  25. with PageMaker 3.01 we have included 22 PostScript printer font
  26. metric (PFM) files that contain character spacing and kerning
  27. information PageMaker needs to space characters proportionally
  28. on the screen and in print. PFM's are not downloadable printer
  29. fonts. If you are not sending your publication to a service bureau
  30. for imagesetter output, you'll need the actual printer fonts
  31. for your printer in order for those fonts to appear in your
  32. printed output.
  33. For information on obtaining Adobe PostScript fonts for your
  34. printer, contact your dealer or Adobe Systems sales at
  35. (800) 344-8335.
  36.  
  37. Before you prepare your PageMaker files for output by a service
  38. bureau, you should verify which format they prefer to receive your
  39. publication files in, and the printer fonts they have available.
  40. Some service bureaus may request printed-to-disk files in
  41. PostScript format which they can simply download to the
  42. imagesetter.
  43. In any case, you'll need to advise your service bureau of the
  44. fonts that were used in your publication.
  45.  
  46. Two screen font files (FON) have also been included with PageMaker
  47. 3.01: ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf Dingbats. Installation of
  48. these two screen files allow you to view the fonts on screen as
  49. they will appear when printed using the corresponding printer
  50. fonts.
  51.  
  52. =================================
  53. Font metrics and updating WIN.INI
  54. =================================
  55. When you choose the "INSTALL POSTSCRIPT FONT METRICS" option
  56. during the PageMaker 3.01 installation  program, additional PFM
  57. (printer font metrics) and FON (screen fonts) files are copied to
  58. your PageMaker directory, in a subdirectory called "metrics."
  59. These files are used in imagesetter-targeted publications when
  60. your system is updated with the following typefaces:
  61.  
  62. -Helvetica Narrow (PFM only)
  63. -New Century Schoolbook (PFM only)
  64. -Palatino (PFM only)
  65. -ITC Avant Garde (PFM only)
  66. -ITC Bookman (PFM only)
  67. -ITC Zapf Chancery (FON & PFM)
  68. -ITC Zapf Dingbats (FON & PFM)
  69.  
  70. Prior to updating your WIN.INI file, be sure that you've either
  71. followed the printer installation procedure during the Windows 3.0
  72. setup program, or configured the "Printers" section of the Windows
  73. Control Panel for at least one, active PostScript printer. (See
  74. your Windows 3.0 documentation for information on configuring
  75. printers.)
  76.  
  77. The following procedures for updating WIN.INI need to be followed in
  78. order for Windows and PageMaker to gain access to the additional PFM
  79. files needed for information on imagesetter-targeted publications:
  80.  
  81. 1)     Change to the Windows directory and make a backup copy of
  82.        WIN.INI. For example, at the DOS prompt, type the
  83.        following:
  84.  
  85.                    cd\[windows directory]
  86.  
  87.        ...then press Enter.
  88.  
  89.                    copy win.ini winini.sav
  90.  
  91.        ...then press Enter. A copy of WIN.INI is saved as
  92.        WININI.SAV in the Windows directory.
  93.  
  94.        NOTE: If you're already in Windows 3.0, open File Manager.
  95.              find WIN.INI in your Windows 3.0 directory and
  96.              highlight (select) the file. Click on the File menu
  97.              name and choose "Copy" (or press F8)...the Copy
  98.              dialog box appears. Type WININI.SAV in the "To:"
  99.              box, and press Enter (or choose "Copy"). A copy of
  100.              WIN.INI is saved as WININI.SAV in the Windows
  101.              directory.
  102.  
  103. 2)     Launch Windows and open "Notepad" (or type "win notepad"
  104.        from the DOS prompt).
  105.  
  106.        NOTE: If you're already in Windows, simply double-click on
  107.              the Notepad icon in Program Manager's Accessories
  108.              group window to open Notepad.
  109.  
  110. 3)     Click on the File menu name and choose "Open...". Find the
  111.        "metrics" subdirectory (in the PageMaker directory) in the 
  112.        "Directories:" scroll box and double-click on it. With the
  113.        cursor, highlight (select) the contents of the "Filename"
  114.        box and type:
  115.  
  116.                    fontme.txt
  117.  
  118.        ...then press Enter or click "OK."
  119.  
  120. 4)     Scroll to the following list of PFM files and highlight
  121.        (select) it:
  122.  
  123. softfonts=22
  124. softfont1=c:\pm\metrics\ag______.pfm
  125. softfont2=c:\pm\metrics\agbo____.pfm
  126. softfont3=c:\pm\metrics\agd_____.pfm

  147.         NOTE: Prior to updating the WIN.INI file, the
  148.               directory\paths of the above PFM font filenames
  149.               can be easily edited in Notepad prior to modifying
  150.               WIN.INI to reflect different font locations. That
  151.               is, if you choose to locate PFM files in any
  152.               other directory...for example, C:\PSFONTS...you'll
  153.               need to reflect this path in the text above that you
  154.               paste into the WIN.INI file:
  155.  
  156.               softfont1=c:\psfonts\ag______.pfm
  157.  
  158.               Also, note that the PFM filenames must be 8
  159.               characters long, in either letters or combinations
  160.               of letters and underline characters. Following the
  161.               filenames, the 3-character extensions are always
  162.               indicated as PFM, which identifies these
  163.               files as printer font metrics files.
  164.  
  165. 5)     With text from step 4 above highlighted (selected), choose
  166.        "Copy" from the Edit menu.
  167.  
  168. 6)     While still in Notepad, open the file WIN.INI located in
  169.        your Windows directory. (See step 3 above for similar
  170.        procedure.)
  171.  
  172. 7)     Scroll or search for the first [PostScript,<port>] label
  173.        for the target printer connection that is to be used for
  174.        imagesetting output only, like from a Linotronic.
  175.  
  176.        These labels appear at the top of any PostScript printer
  177.        port section(s) in WIN.INI. For example, you may find the
  178.        following:
  179.  
  180.        [PostScript,COM1]
  181.  
  182.        ...or
  183.  
  184.        [PostScript,FILE]
  185.  
  186. 8)     Place the cursor just below the [PostScript,<port>] label,
  187.        click to create an insertion point, and choose "Paste" from
  188.        the Edit menu (or press Shift+Insert).
  189.  
  190.        NOTE: See the section below "IF YOU ALREADY HAVE POSTSCRIPT
  191.              SOFTFONTS INSTALLED..." if references to different
  192.              PFM files and their locations exist from previous
  193.              softfont installations.
  194.  
  195. 9)     Repeat step 8 above for any other [PostScript,<port>]
  196.        sections you anticipate using for composing imagesetter
  197.        targeted publications.
  198.  
  199.        NOTE: Do not repeat for connections to laser printers that
  200.              might not support Adobe PostScript softfonts.
  201.  
  202. 10)    Choose "Save" from the File menu, and then choose "Exit" to
  203.        close Notepad.
  204.  
  205.        NOTE: Make sure you save the WIN.INI file in the Windows
  206.              directory.
  207.  
  208. 11)    Go to the "Screen font installation" section below to
  209.        install screen fonts. If you choose not to install screen
  210.        fonts, exit and restart Windows to activate the modified
  211.        WIN.INI.
  212.  
  213. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE POSTSCRIPT SOFTFONTS INSTALLED...
  214.  
  215.        If you already have PostScript softfonts installed, then
  216.        other softfont entries may already exist in the printer
  217.        section(s) of the WIN.INI file. To avoid conflict, you'll
  218.        need to edit WIN.INI using Notepad to include the
  219.        additional lines in continuous, numerical order. For
  220.        example, if 2 fonts already exist in the WIN.INI printer
  221.        section(s), and have a "softfonts=" line that reads:
  222.  
  223.                    softfonts=2
  224.  
  225.        ...you'll need to paste-in the text for the 22 softfonts
  226.        provided with PageMaker 3.01 below it, then edit the
  227.        "softfonts=" line to read:
  228.  
  229.                    softfonts=24
  230.  
  231.        Finally, edit the 24 lines of text that follow to reflect
  232.        the correct numerical order (i.e. "softfont1" through
  233.        "softfont24").
  234.  
  235.        NOTE:  There should be no more than one "softfonts=" line
  236.               that indicates the total number of softfonts in each
  237.               of the PostScript printer port sections.
  238.  
  239.        Also, note that these PFM's will be available to other
  240.        Windows applications that use softfonts in addition to
  241.        PageMaker.
  242.  
  243. =================================
  244. Screen font installation
  245. =================================
  246. If you chose "INSTALL POSTSCRIPT FONT METRICS" during the
  247. PageMaker 3.01 installation procedure, note that the Screen font
  248. (FON) files (i.e. ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf Dingbats) were
  249. also installed in the PageMaker\METRICS subdirectory. In order for
  250. Windows and PageMaker to access these screen fonts you must:
  251.  
  252. 1)     Launch Windows and double-click on the Control Panel icon
  253.        (or type "win control" at the DOS prompt).
  254.  
  255. 2)     Double-click on the "Fonts" icon.
  256.  
  257. 3)     Choose "Add..." in the Fonts dialog box. The "Add Font
  258.        Files" dialog box appears.
  259.  
  260. 4)     In the "Directories:" scroll box, choose the correct file
  261.        location where the FON files are located (i.e. the
  262.        "metrics" subdirectory in the PageMaker directory).
  263.  
  264. 5)     In the "Font Files" scroll box on the left, scroll to
  265.        zd______.fon and zc______.fon and highlight (select) both
  266.        fonts.
  267.  
  268. 6)     Click "OK."
  269.  
  270.        The selected Screen fonts will be copied automatically into
  271.        the "SYSTEM" subdirectory in the Windows directory. They
  272.        can be viewed in the Fonts dialog box under "Samples of
  273.        Font." Also, the [fonts] section of WIN.INI will be
  274.        automatically updated with the following text:
  275.  
  276.                         ZapfChancery-MediumItalic=ZC______.FON
  277.                         ZapfDingbats=ZD______.FON
  278.  
  279. Screen font files are now installed and should appear as correct
  280. screen representations of their associated printer fonts that are
  281. chosen in "Type specs..." under the Type menu.
  282.  
  283. NOTE: You must exit and restart Windows in order for any
  284.       modifications to WIN.INI to take effect after installing PFM
  285.       files.
  286.  
  287.       Also, if you experience any difficulty adding screen fonts
  288.       (FON) after you've deleted other screen fonts, exit Control
  289.       Panel and repeat the above steps for adding screen fonts.
