Circuit's Edge
Part 3
Ok, so you've rescued Abdul; time to see what Mahmoud will hand you as a
reward for this service. How about that...you get a static gun...and, at
last, a holodisk viewer! (Also, somewhere along the line, Papa will send you
some more kiam for performing the rescue)
Now, why is that so great? Well, you haven't found Tamara yet, right? And she
is certainly in the middle of things, so getting hold of her might really help
you find Papa's notebook.
If it hasn't occurred to you before, Tamara must have been planning on some
heavy-duty cosmetic surgery...and there's only one place in or out of the
Budayeen where she could get it, namely the medical clinic.
However, the nurse is not terrific with names, so if you could only show her
a picture...and now, with the viewer, you can do that. So visit the clinic
with both the disk and the viewer. Yep, the nurse remembers her, all right.
But the info isn't going to come free; the lady wants a pair of emerald
earrings as the price for telling.
Hoping your bankbook will be able to stand the strain, you go to Jewels of
Morocco and ask about the emerald earrings (emerald, not earrings). Too late
again, they've been sold to, of all people, a street dealer. So it's back to
Chiri's where you question any street dealers present about the earrings. A
little baksheesh elicits some vague info about a blonde.
To save some time, the woman who bought the earrings is Lily at the Red Light
Lounge. She isn't at all willing to give them up, so some persuasion is
necessary. Lily, by the way, usually shows up late, so you can take out a few
hours here for a nap if you prefer.
How to get the earrings? They're shaped like serpents, right? And there just
happens to be a House of Snakes in the Budayeen. Go there and buy the green
snake. Give it to Lily, and snatch the earrings during the confusion. Now you
can hand the earrings over to the nurse, who tells you that Tamara signed in
as Arissa Lockhart.
At last! Nip back to Chiri's and ask Arissa about Tamara. Now that you *really*
know, she admits it, tells you most of the background about the notebook, and
promises to turn it over to you. She just has to get it, first. Hang out and
wait for her call.
When you get to her apartment, you find the door open. Uh oh. Cautiously,
expecting the worst, you slip inside. Whew! No mangled corpse. In fact, no
corpse of any kind...just a note that says you better make tracks for the
warehouse.
However, before doing that, it is wise to take some precautions. First, if you
need healing, visit the clinic and get fixed up. Then go to your apartment and
pick up the black key, if you don't have it with you already. Make sure you
have the Outlaw chip in your rack. Save the game.
Just before you enter the warehouse, chip in Outlaw. Inside, you find the
repulsive Abu Salah, along with Tamara/Arissa, who is fastened to a really
nasty torture machine. In the time-honored fashion of all villains, Abu
gloats over his supposed victory, giving a detailed and stomach-turning
description of what he has in mind for the hapless girl.
Then he raises his own weapon to shoot you. This is your chance...use your
own gun (the static pistol) and shoot to disable. Two shots is all it should
take to put Salah down for the count. It certainly felt good to do that, and
I had a sneaking regret that I couldn't stick him in his own nefarious device.
However, it ain't over til the fat lady sings, and she hasn't opened her mouth
yet. After you pick up Papa's notebook, Salah revives briefly, just long
enough to set the infernal machine going, then pegs out for good. Tamara might
do the same, if you can't stop the thing in time. Fortunately, you brought the
black key with you, so it's no trouble at all to turn it off and free the girl.
Well, it certainly has been a long, bloody trail to the notebook, but you
finally have it. And now that you do, better not waste too much time bringing
it to Papa, who will be most pleased. In fact, you get to move out of that
slummy apartment and right in with Papa himself! Doesn't that make you feel
really good? (Heh!) Even if it doesn't, you can at least relax a little,
cause the fat lady's warbling now (grin).
