The sketchy drawings, combining the quick economy of cartoons with carefully chosen layers of color washes, effectively depict John Patrick Norman McHennessy’s outrageous adventures. He becomes a king of student/pilgrim, innocent and guileless in the face of both natural disasters and adult irrationality. Although the meek little boy does not inherit the earth, he does exact a delightful and richly deserved revenge on his dreaded and dreadful instructor. E.R.T.
