During World War II, the U.S. Government began systematically monitoring foreign radio broadcasts and news publications. The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) and the Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) are now run by the CIA. With thousands of print browsers, and listening posts worldwide, much of what they cull from open sources is quickly translated, sorted and republished. Since the sources are public, so is their selection. FBIS and JPRS reports are gold mines — the most concentratedly rich and diverse news sources I’ve ever encountered.
