Oz96 has just happened, and PoP released a demo called "Mmmm Donuts" which
placed third..
PoP's diskmag, What?!, was released last month, and albeit a very crappy
font which made reading a chore, it went off quite well =) We hope that
this diskmag gets off the ground across .au, and we promise to provide a
readable font in issue 2 =).
Coven 96 is drawing nearer, and we hope to really blitz last years effort
by getting more interstate people and of course more local people. This year
should see some actual demo/art/music RELEASES, as opposed to just watching
demos from old parties on the big digital screen. =)
The venue is currently positioned to be at the same place as Coven 95, that
being the Union Building at Adelaide University, this year Dizzy happens to
be the vice-president of the Adelaide Uni Computer Group, and so that should
ensure we pay fuck all for the hire of the joint =), this will allow a lot
more money for prizes and other niceties such as a professional sound sys-
tem.
It is planned to be held the same approximate date as last year, that being
around the 14th of July, but we will make sure it coincides with as many
holidays as possible (both Uni and School as well as interstate breaks).
With sponsorship we can push the party to 36hrs or more. So it looks to be a
real potential ripsnorta =)
PoP has a few more members at the moment =).. In order of joining they are:
ChowderHead - VGA
NaeBlis - Fuckall =)
Dizzy - Code
Old Cheese - VGA (music?)
Poos - Music
This brings us into double digits. fuck.. that's scary..
Hopefully with so many fucken members, we should finally be able to provide
the scene with some good releases =)

Priests of Power was formed as a direct result (believe or not) of a
Year 10 history project. Myself (M'Zarich), my friend Taint and some other
guy were asked to create a history project depicting some facet of World
War II in the Pacific Ocean with the Aussies and the USA against Japan.
So we decided to make a computer battle simulation, ie. a game.
Well, it was a fairly long program, about 3000 lines of code, which
is pretty big for a QBasic program (Or so I thought). Soon, Taint decided
he wanted to draw some graphics. Well, fed up with DATA statements, I set
about creating a short graphics editor, a bit like a 256 color "Etchy Sketch"
Well, it was pretty limited and rushed but it did its job and with it we drew
what we thought were some pretty "OK" graphics.
Later on, I was having a chat to the guy that was to become "The
WALKER". He liked the idea of expanding the game a bit. I didn't really like
the idea as I was becoming interested in C/C++ programming. But anyway, we
had a go and we managed an "A" for our efforts! He also liked the idea of the
"Paint Program". By now, Taint had started to REALLY complain about the
controls.
Well, I had done a bit of preliminary "Hacking" in assembly a year
before (trying to dissect viruses mainly!) and I knew enough about interrupts
and so on, to chuck in mouse support for the thing. Then, as some complex
mathematical functions crept in, the paint program literally exploded with
millions of new functions complete with millions of different keypresses.
It was about this time that we formally adopted the name:
"Priests Of Power"
This name came from the book '1984' by George Orwell :
".... we are the priests of power." (MZ's fav. book at the time)
By the time we had exhausted all of our ideas for new functions, we
had sitting in front of us, a 5500 line QuickBasic program that needed five
.OBJs to link (QuickBasic kept running out of memory!) and linked to form a
250k .EXE file which required over 500k of memory to run. Now that sort of
size is understandable, but for a QuickBasic program? Well, we were pretty
happy with our efforts. However, the major draw back was that it was still
completely keyboard controlled. Sure, you could use the mouse to select
boundaries and stuff, but to activate a function you'd have to press a key.
Thus we decided to redesign the whole thing with a more user-friendly
look, toolbox, window type options boxes etc. However, although the plans
were down and we knew exactly what to do, it never eventuated. This is mainly
because I decided, once and for all, that we were going to master C. I
managed to get a copy of QuickC version 1.00. Only one word could describe
it: "Pathetic!" We briefly learnt how to program C from a horrible book
called "Teach yourself... C". This coupled with QuickC v1.00, discouraged us
from pursuing C any further. Thus we sat in limbo, not bothering to work on
our Paint Program, we just sat there programming little things that didn't
really do much.
End of '93, Prost had won the F1 crown, year 11 was over and we had
nothing to do for a couple of months until our last year of high school
started. We decided to invest in a new C/C++ compiler. Our choice - Turbo C++
v3.0. Not the most powerful thing but, easy to use, fairly popular and mostly
bloody cheap! This thing made QuickC look like complete rubbish. We played
around with it for a while. I managed to work out a few hardware specifics
(mainly the full comprehension of video memory) and decided to create a
little bouncing thing. It was then that we got our first taste of VGA demos.
We had seen Hack intros (esp. The Humble Guys), but nothing with any
creativity and guts.
The first real demo we saw was called "Second Reality" by some guys
who called themselves the "Future Crew" :). Needless to say, we were
impressed! I then went out and hunted down all the other demos I could find.
We decided this demo scene was for us! We made huge investments in books
(over $300 Australian dollars, about $220 US) and ever since we have learnt
the careful art of efficient, nice programming in C, assembler and believe it
or not, QuickBasic. I finished off the short scrolly intro "Bounce" with a
nice logo and font from The WALKER, As well as Mark J. Cox's run-time mod
player linked in. Add a star-field type thing and we had our first intro.
I hope this hasn't been tooooo boring :)

We haven't released very much stuff. Most of our coding has been
experimentation that was worthless to everyone except ourselves! Anyway, here
is a short list of some of the crap we made (don't expect to find much of it
on all BBS's !). If you want to get any of our latest stuff, you can find it
on our World HQ BBS, RooM 1o1, or our Distribution BBS's listed at the end of
this document.

Currently Priests Of Power has 10 members...... Wow! :) If you think
you'd like to join, contact us at one of the sites listed at the end of this
document. Please be prepared to show us examples of your best work
(Coding/Graphics/Music). We are now looking for any graphics artists we can
find. (ANSi, VGA, SVGA anything will be cool). But, that doesn't mean we
don't want you Coders And Musicians out there! Oh, and just because you're
not 16 -> 17 doesn't mean you can't get in... Most demo groups have people
ranging from 14 to 20 -> .......

Always start off in a high level language. QuickBasic is ideal
because it is so easy to use ; you can create useful things quickly. It can
be very structured and naturally leads on to C/C++. Remember that just
because a program needs to be fast, doesn't mean it needs to be full-blown
assembly. Calling simple, easy to understand, yet fast assembly functions
through QuickBasic and C is very easy and can lead to greatly enhanced code.
Don't expect to be able to read a book and then program an unreal demo or
game. Half the reason demos have evolved is because people have experimented
with coding. Never committing themselves to a big project, but instead
releasing little things that help them learn the tricks of programming.
Remember that the experience of stuffing up when programming is often the
only way to learn how to program efficient code consistently later on. So
when reading a book on programming, take a recently read chapter and make a
program of it, experimenting with different combinations of code and
parameters. This is the only way to "learn" the art of programming.
Finally, when you do finally decide to make something BIG, plan it on
paper first. It is our opinion that 50% of programming is planning, 5% is
coding and 45% is debugging. One of the biggest mistakes one can make is to
jump into a game or demo and get lost in what to do next. If one has a sheet
of paper in front of themselves, with algorithms, data formats and basic
plans written on it, one can never get lost of what to do next or how to do
it.
Priests of Power will share any useful information it finds. Although
we can not promise top quality tutorials, we will do our best and follow the
leads of groups like VLA and Renaissance, who have been of enormous help in
teaching us how to do some of the techniques we use.
and as an instant moment of shit hit us.. we advise you of this brand new
useful information attained from our donuts..

follow the example of a few and submit shitloads of articles.
Coven 96 is to be held at the university of Adelaide (again), except we'll be
using a big hall there rather than two little halls (this makes it easier for
us to keep everyone together and so we dont have to kart computers around).
We'll be doing a serious advertising compaign and hope to get a few sponsors
to help cover costs. This means that there may be hardware on sale at coven96.
We'll release a seperate nfo file about Coven 96 when we finalise more info.
You better come or we'll donut your house.
