Few Words about this demo ...
───────────────────────────────────
For our second demo, we decided to strike back with more vector
and state-of-the-art filling functions and cinematic mouvements.
Some technical informations about:
- Original 32bits 3D vector routine optimised for 386/486.
- Gouraud Shading.
- High resolution Texture mapping.(every bitmap is 64Kb size)
- Light Sourced Texture mapping.
- Unique realtime anti aliasing for 'ray-traced'-like (for 486)
- many polys (up to 1000 polys for some objects).
- Original cubic-bspline realtime track for smooth mouvements.
- multitask timed animations for smooth animations on fast computer.
- possibility to change resolution for small configuration
(for 386 and 486SX).
- and other cool 3D effects ...
And the sound:
- Always DSMi, a high quality sound for 16bits DMA sound card.
- Stereo Surround (where available).
- SBAWE32,SB16,SBPRO,SB, DAC, Pro Audio Spectrum and Gravis (of curz!)
- REALbass system for powerful sound for SB16 and AWE32
- Original scores by TOALKNOR made on the famous Scream Tracker 3.2
and an easy & intuitive setup with a lot of informations
Requirements for running this demo
────────────────────────────────────
- MS-DOS v5.00 or higher
- an 386/486/Pentium processor or higher processor
- a fast video card (sVGA)
- a sound card like Sound Blaster 16 or any else
- about 560kb of conventionnal memory
- EMS required (about 512Kb) for music
- with XMS (just himem.sys) you can run the demo with
less conventionnal memory
Optimal Configuration :
────────────────────────────────────
486DX2,VLB and Sound Blaster 16ASP for 16bit and 44Hz sound
stereo surround and RealBASS effect, with high-details
17'' screen.
NB :
DIMENSION don't use FPU (coprocessor). So, purchasing a FPU won't
improve the demo speed.
We have tested the demo on a Pentium 90, and the animation is really
flying ! (..so real..so smooth.. a must-see!!!)
Getting Started with the demo
────────────────────────────────────
DIMENSION is not designed for Windows**. If the program finds Windows**
(WINDIR variable), it will automatically reboot your computer :).
About OS/2*, DSMi is not compatible with OS/2* since OS/2* can't
handle correctly VDS (Virtual DMA Specification).
For Gravis Ultrasound, should work fine. (don't forget to set ULTRASND
correctly)
Anyway, you should reboot on DOS partition.
Running from a CD-ROM (specially on single speed and 386) with a
16bit card, would probably result in a crash because both sound card
and CD-ROM will overhead DMA access. So copy it on you hard drive if
this problem occurs.
*tested on v2.1 Special Edition
**Windows v3.11
In the setup
──────────────────────────────────
In the Setup, you can change some parameters by clicking on icons.
By the way, a mouse driver is strongly recommanded.
On lower system, like 386 or 486SX, you can choose 'LOW DETAILS'
for less screen quality, but a good improvement for speed.
You can lower sampling rate too in order to increase speed.
During the demo
──────────────────────────────────
You may note that ESC skips the part, AFTER THE CURRENT ANIMATION
IS ENDED, except for the credits part.
Quality Assurance
──────────────────────────────────
We always try to provide best quality demo as we can. So we have
tested DIMENSION on many different configurations (from 386SX16
to PENTIUM 90MHZ).
We are lucky enough to work in a computer university, so the demo was
tested on very exotic video cards, on DX²66 boosted to 80Mhz), and
computers where 2nd Reality (from FC), Unreal or Holistic didn't run
at all.
Anyway, try to run on clean boot with himem.sys and emm386.exe
if you haven't something else than an Advanced Gravis UltraSound.
Refers to you MSDOS user manual for further informations about
memory optimizations.
What is a demo ?
────────────────────────────────────
This section is dedicated for people who have never seen a demo before
(and they are still a lot on Pc).
Demo are "showcase of music and graphics showing programming skills".
Demo are programs featuring music and (most of the time) calculated
in *RealTime* that means all you will see is calculated by the
processor and are not animations like created with 3DStudio. So it
requires sometime a lot of processing power. But the demos last far
longer and are shorter in size than animations.
In DIMENSION, vectors transformations, rotations and filling functions
like texture mapping or Gouraud are computed in realtime, using
assembler routines or strict ANSI-C optimized algorithms.
Indeed, we are projecting to make some conversions for UNIX systems .
What's mean STEREO SURROUND, STEREO MIXING and REALBASS ?
──────────────────────────────────
Not only for graphics performance, music takes a great part
in (our) demos. That's why DIMENSION uses DSMI system.
DSMI is an advanced music replayer and sound effects.
Probably, it has some years ahead comparing to most of games
available today. It's provides vivid sounds and music for small
cost.
Stereo Surround Pro Logic emulation provides an realistic sound
for the music, giving more space, like at the cinema.
In fact, you should have an Surround Decoder hooked on you
sound Card to render Surround Effect, and 5 speakers.
With REALBASS system (only for SB16 and AWE32), drums and bass
are stronger and more realistic than ever ! It's equivalent to
a loudness function of an HIFI set.
Stereo mixing improves stereo mixing, makes the music sound less
artificial. By the way, we strongly suggest to hook you sound card
on your HIFI set !

Greetings
────────────────────────────────────
Some special greetings go to :
- Cascada, Imphobia, Dust, Infiny : for meeting them at Assembly'94
and encourage to rewrite 3D engine in ASM.
- Paranoia / Distorsion : for beeing present at Assembly'94 too.
- Turbulence : for tech support
- KLF for releasing so cool raves/techno music.
- Otto Chrons for his Digital Sound Music Interface.
- BiSouNouRS / ARSENiC: for the ascii RealTech logo!

And normal grettings :
- Future Crew / EMF / Renaissance
- All people who tested our demo and their strange VGA video cards
(like Video7, some strange VESA video card and PCI) that permits
to write universal routines working on every PC.
Hope you like this demo as much as we've enjoyed making it.
Sincerely,
